  • Main engine failures in ship operations can lead to a major damage in terms of the vessel itself and the financial cost. In this respect, monitoring of a vessel's main engine condition is crucial in ensuring the vessel's performance and reducing the maintenance cost. The collection of a huge amount of vessel operational data in the maritime industry has never been easier with the advent of advanced data collection technologies. Real-time monitoring of the condition of a vessel's main engine has a potential to create significant value in maritime industry. This study presents a case study on the establishment of upper control limit to detect vessel's main engine failures using multivariate control chart. The case study uses sample data of an ocean-going vessel operated by a major marine services company in Korea, collected in the period of 2016.05-2016.07. This study first reviews various main engine-related variables that are considered to affect the condition of the main engine, and then attempts to detect abnormalities and their patterns via multivariate control charts. This study is expected to help to enhance the vessel's availability and provide a basis for a condition-based maintenance that can support proactive management of vessel's main engine in the future.

  • Most of vessels are not evaluated for their vibration and noise effects to human body. The vibration and noise generated by engine and auxiliary machine in vessel is a negative element for seamen. Therefore, in this paper, the diagnosis and evaluation of vibration and noise from vessel is accomplished by a shipbuilding corporation. The vibration and noise transferred from engine room and auxiliary machine was measured during the steady-state operation, and the vibration and noise map of vessel was made. Also, in order to evaluate the ship environment for human, the diagnosis is carried out on the base of measurement results.

  • The hot forming process of an exhaust CAM for vessel engine was designed by finite element(FE) simulation and experimental analysis. An aim of process design was to achieve the near-net shaped CAM forgings by hot forging process. Based on the compression test results of the low alloy steel, power dissipation map was generated using the the dynamic materials model(DMM). From the map, the initial heating temperature was determined as 1200oC. FE analysis was simulated to predict the formation of forging defects and deformed shape with different forging designs. Optimum process design suggested in this work was made by comparing with the CAM for vessel engine manufactured by actual forging process.

An aim of process design was to achieve the near-net shaped CAM forgings by hot forging process. Based on the compression test results of the low alloy steel, deformation processing map was generated using the superposition approach between the dynamic materials model (DMM) and flow stability and/or instability criteria. From the processing map, the initial heating temperature was determined as $1200^{\circ}C$. FE analysis was simulated to predict the formation of rolling defects and deformed shape with different forging designs. • This paper presents the vibration problem of the Engine Casing (E/C) "B" deck in the handymax vessel and describes a method to avoid resonance. The first ship of the series did not have any vibration issue on the "B" deck. However, resonance condition occurred when additional machine was installed to the following vessels. To understand the dynamic characteristics of the deck, the normal mode analysis and impact test have been performed. Within the normal operating range of the vessel, the $1^{st}$ natural frequency of the E/C "B" deck is close to the main engine's $6^{th}$ order. Based on these analysis, a reinforcement on the deck was suggested and it proved to be effective. Since actual impact test after the reinforcement also confirmed the resonance avoidance.

  • To propose proper vessel characteristics for sustainable fisheries in Korean waters, we analyzed the fishing capacity, scale efficiency and utilization of large pair-trawl vessels based on the database of catch, effort and vessel characteristics (gross tonnage and engine power) in 1990 by applying data envelopment analysis (DEA). The input factors were gross tonnage, horse power and days operated; whereas the output factor was expected catch by vessel characteristics. The optimal vessel types, selected based on the input-oriented technical efficiency and gross tonnages, was 100 GT with engine power <600 HP. The output-oriented unbiased estimate of capacity utilization (CD) decreased with increasing vessel tonnage. For the same tonnage vessels, the CD decreased with increasing engine power.

  • This paper presents the numerical estimation of the fatigue life for the welded parts of the engine frame box of the S60MC-C vessel engine. The time-variations of the effective stresses at the critical points during a piston cycle are computed through the finite element analysis, by applying the dynamic loadings that were analytically derived by the kinematic analysis. The fatigue life of the welded parts is estimated by making use of the hot-spot stress extrapolation and the Palmgrem-Minor cumulative damage rule.

  • Structural intensity has been mainly utilized to identify vibration energy flow in a vessel. In this paper, the structural intensity of a shuttle tanker subjected to H-moment of the main engine was calculated using a finite element model. From the analysis, it was found that the top-bracing elements, which support the main engine onto the hull structure to prevent the excessive transverse vibration of the main engine, play the role of the dominant path and sink for vibration energy flow from the main engine. Therefore, the structural intensity was controlled by the modification of stiffness and damping characteristics of the top-bracing elements. As a result, it is observed that the transverse vibration level at the center of navigation bridge deck decreased after the control of structural intensity.
