In the present study, unsteady flow analysis has been conducted to investigate the blade forces and wake flow around a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis small wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Uniform velocities of 3, 5 and 7 m/s are applied as inlet boundary condition. Relatively large vortex shedding is formed at the wake region of the photovoltaic panel, which affects the increase of blade torque and wake flow downstream of the wind turbine. It is found that blade force has a good relation to the variation of the angle of attack with the rotation of turbine blades. Variations in the torque on the turbine blade over time create a cyclic fluctuation, which can be a source of turbine vibration and noise. Unsteady fluctuation of blade forces is also analyzed to understand the nature of the vibration of a small wind turbine over time. The detailed flow field inside the turbine blades is analyzed and discussed.

In the present study, structure analysis has been performed to understand the deflection and stress distribution for a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Modal analysis is also evaluated to avoid resonance gerenerated by sychronism between a turbine and a lamppost. To analyze deflection, stress and frequency, general analysis code(ANSYS-Mechanical 13) is employed in the present work. Throughout structure analysis in the hybrid street-lamp, maximum stress is observed at the connecting position between a turbine blade and a blade supporter. Campbell diagram which is combined the natural frequency of turbine blades and blade passing frequency is presented to analyze a system resonance. It is found that the resonance of the system having a rotating turbine blade and a lamppost can avoid by the optimal selection of geometric parameters of a wind turbine.
New concept of wind energy conversion system is proposed to increase the energy density at a given working space. The quality of wind for wind power generation is depend on its direction and speed. However, the quality is not good on land because wind direction is changeable all the time and the speed as well. The most popularly operated wind turbine system is an axial-flow free turbine. But its conversion efficiency is less than 30% and even less than 20% considering the operating time. In this research, a cross-flow type wind turbine system is proposed with a convergent-divergent duct system to accelerate the low speed wind at the inlet of the wind turbine. Inlet guide vane is also introduced to the wind turbine system to have continuous power generation under the change of wind direction. In here, the availability of wind energy generation is evaluated with the change of the size of the inlet guide vane and the optimum geometry of the turbine impeller blade was found for the innovative wind power generation system.
The static and dynamic structural integrity qualification was performed through the seismic analysis of a small-size Savonius-type vertical wind turbine at dead weight plus wind load and seismic loads. The ANSYS finite element program was used to develop the FEM model of the wind turbine and to accomplish static, modal, and dynamic frequency response analyses. The stress of the wind turbine structure for each wind load and dead weight was calculated and combined by taking the square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) to obtain static stresses. Seismic response spectrum analysis was also carried out in the horizontal (X and Y) and vertical (Z) directions to determine the response stress distribution for the required response spectrum (RRS) at safe-shutdown earthquake with a 5% damping (SSE-5%) condition. The stress resulting from the seismic analysis in each of the three directions was combined with the SRSS to yield dynamic stresses. These static and dynamic stresses were summed by using the same SRSS. Finally, this total stress was compared with the allowable stress design, which was calculated based on the requirements of the KBC 2009, KS C IEC 61400-1, and KS C IEC 61400-2 codes.
We study the progressive full-scale wind tunnel tests on a high solidity vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) for various tip speeds and pitch angles to understand the VAWT shaft system's dynamics using 0-1 Test for chaos. We identify that while varying rotor speed (tip speed) of the turbine, the system's dynamics change from periodic to chaotic through quasiperiodic and strange non-chaotic (SNA) states. The present study is the first experimental evidence for the existence of these states in the VAWT shaft system to the best of our knowledge. Using the asymptotic growth value Kc in 0-1 test, when the turbine operates at the low tip speeds and high pitch angles for low incoming wind speeds, the system behaves periodic (Kc ≈ 0). However, when the incoming wind speed increases further the system's dynamics shift from periodic to chaotic vibrations through quasi-periodic and SNA. This phenomenon is due to the dynamic stalling of blades which induces chaotic vibration in the VAWT shaft system. Further, the singular continuous spectrum method validates the presence of SNA and differentiates the SNA from chaotic vibrations.
This paper did basic study on the vertical-axis wind turbine. Namely, This paper was try to find the optimum conditions by using the ANSYS CFX simulation program through the changes of the main-blade angle and sub-blade angle. Main-blade Shape #4 angle $45^{\circ}$ compared to others Shape angle $0^{\circ}$ was increased by 157.2[%] to 263.2[%] in the power output and was increased by 110[%] to 250[%] in the power coefficient. Also, when the Shape #5 Fin length of main-blade doubles, because the power output was 70.8[%] compared to Shape #1 and 27.5[%] compared to Shape #4, and the power coefficient was 60[%] compared to Shape #1 and 28.6[%] compared to Shape #4, the power output and the power efficiency were rather reduced. The output current of Shape #4 was increased 109.9[%] compared to Shape #1 and increased 250[%] compared to Shape #5, and The output voltage of Shape #4 was increased 22.5[%] compared to Shape #1 and increased 3.7[%] compared to Shape #4.
In this study, the design and verification of 6 kW class lift-type vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) has been conducted using advanced CAE technique based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element method (FEM), and computational structural dynamics (CSD). Designed aerodynamic performance of the VAWT model is tested using unsteady CFD method. Designed structural safety is also tested through the evaluation of maximum induced stress level and resonance characteristics using FEM and CSD methods. It is importantly shown that the effect of master eccentricity due to rotational inertia needs to be carefully considered to additionally investigate dynamic stress and deformation level of the designed VAWT system.
In this study, aerodynamic analyses have been conducted for 4-Bladed Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) configuration and the results are compared with experimental data. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation with LES turbulence model is solved for unsteady flow problems. In addition, the computation results by standard k-${\omega}$ and SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence models are also presented and compared. An experiment model of 4-Bladed VAWT model has been designed and constructed herein. Experimental tests for aerodynamic performance of the present VAWT model are practically conducted using the vehicle mounted testing system. Comparison results between the experiment and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are presented in order to show the accuracy of CFD analyses using the different turbulent models.
