  • We suggest a multi-path propagation analysis method using DTM(Digital Terrain Map). Generally, the total signal strength at a target is calculated by adding the field propagated in free space and the field reflected from the ground surface. In this paper, we also consider the vertical reflections associated with the vertical surfaces such as precipitous cliffs and electricity pylons in the mountain area. In addition, we primarily take account the main slope of the ground surface to improve the accuracy of the total field density at the target.

  • In this study, several new types of floating breakwater are proposed according to the geometry of the vertical barrier and the existence of horizontal plate, and are compared to the steel floating breakwater adopted in Won-Jun fishing port and the performance of wave control is numerically investigated by using Green function method. From the numerical results, model attached the horizontal barrier under the vertical barrier is more efficient for reflection and transmission coefficient than the steel floating breakwater in Won-Jun fishing port. It is confirmed that the transmitted waves can be controlled efficiently by optimizing the length and distance of a vertical and horizontal barriers.

  • In this study, we develop a three-dimensional (3D) terahertz time-of-flight (THz-TOF) imaging technique with a large depth range, based on asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) methods. THz-TOF imaging with the ASOPS technique enables rapid scanning with a time-delay span of 10 ns. This means that a depth range of 1.5 m is possible in principle, whereas in practice it is limited by the focus depth determined by the optical geometry, such as the focal length of the scan lens. We characterize the spatial resolution of objects at different vertical positions with a focal length of 5 cm. The lateral resolution varies from 0.8-1.8 mm within the vertical range of 50 mm. We obtain THz-TOF images for samples with multiple reflection layers; the horizontal and vertical locations of the objects are successfully determined from the 2D cross-sectional images, or from reconstructed 3D images. For instance, we can identify metallic objects embedded in insulating enclosures having a vertical depth range greater than 30 mm. For feasible practical use, we employ the proposed technique to locate a metallic object within a thick chocolate bar, which is not accessible via conventional transmission geometry.

  • We carried out an image analysis of living cells forming their contacts at the bottom of the cell culturing substrate. In order to visualize the contact area selectively, we adopted total-internal-reflection-fluorescence (TIRF) method, which can illuminate the specimen volume within only several hundred nano-meters above the substrate. From the fluorescent intensity of the TRF image, we could calculate the distance of the cell surface from the substrate. As a result, we visualized the origin of cell contacts, their movements, and the change of cell-contact type from the close-contact into focal-contact with information of its vertical displacement representing the temporal evolution process of the three-dimensional cell-surface-profile near the contact area during this metamorphosis.

  • An Interpretation technique is presented to determine strike, dip, velocity and depth of 3-D planar layers from refraction or reflection traveltime curve. This interpretation technique determines the direction of emerging ray from the slope of the traveltime curve and traces the emerging ray to the refractor or reflector. The ray direction in the last layer is used to decide the normal vector to the refractor or reflector from whick its dip, strike and velocity are calculated. The vertical depth to the refractor or reflector is computed by using the intercept or zero-offset time and the ray direction in each layer. Some tests on the interpretation method are performed for the sysnthetic traveltimes generated in 3-D model layers and show that the paramerters of the model layers are accurately determined.

  • There are many studies about submerged structures or porous wave absorbers to decrease damage of coast and structures. Submerged structures and porous wave absorber are decreasing energy of incoming wave by reflecting or dissipation with changing depth or with porous rubble mound. This study addresses the reflection and transmission of long wave from a trapezoidal breakwater and a vertical porous wave absorber at the same time. A systematic shape transfer is derived to determine wave reflection and transmission. And periodic solutions are matched at the slope and the front face of the absorber by assuming continuity of pressure and mass. The transmission coefficient is determined as a function of parameters describing the incoming waves, transmitting waves through the trapezoidal breakwater and the absorber characteristics.

  • The patient had bruxism and epilepsy tendency. Inadequate or unstable posterior support was identified due to severe anterior attrition and decreased occlusal vertical dimension. Prematurities of posterior occlusal and wear facets increased the function of anterior teeth, resulting in severe wear. Wear facets displayed sharply defined peripheries, which are matched on articulated diagnostic casts. Also the patient showed C III malocclusion tendency, and lost some facial contour with drooping corners on the mouth. In this case, the alteration of OVD (Occlusal Vertical Dimention) may provide a biologically compatible adjunct to the treatment such as dentofacial esthetics, improved visual proportion in facial heightand mechanical solutions to the force-management of the masticatory system. The patient requires extensive restorative treatment to regain appropriate function, esthetics and comfort. According to the report by Farhad Fays, the average vertical distance from the maxillary to the mandibular mucolabial reflection in the region of the central incisors is approximately 34mm. However, the vertical distance of this patient was found to be 32mm, which was necessary to add gauge 20-sheets to apply vertical dimension. A removable occlusal overlay splint, which restores OVD to the estimated optimalposition, is the general first trial. The patient was observed periodically for 6 weeks, while appropriate adjustments were made vertical dimension to function. When patient felt comfortable with the splint, the teeth were prepared, and provisional restorations are placed for 3 months. The provisional restoration was fabricated by a diagnostic wax-up. When the patient felt comfortable with the provisional restoration, the final restoration mimics OVD, function, and esthetics that have been developed in the treatment restorations. Restoration of the extremely worn dentition presents a substantial challenge to thedentists. Therefore, careful evaluation of the etiology, history, and factors associated with occlusal vertical dimension should be preceded prior to the appropriate treatment planning.

  • This paper presents a technique to determine anisotropic elastic coefficients from traveltimes of seismic reflections or vertical seismic profiling (VSP) in tranversely isotropic layers whose thicknesses are known. The elastic coefficients are calculated from three different velocities (vertical, horizontal and skew velocities) which are determined from skew hyperbolic traveltimes by least-square fitting or semblance analysis. This interpretation technique is tested for synthetic traveltime data obtained for transversely isotropic models. The test shows that the anisotropic elastic constants of the models are determined accurately by this interpretation method.

  • Recently numerical approaches for wave loads acting on the vertical caisson of breakwater, and resulting wave reflection and transmission coefficients have been performed. Although the numerical studies by Sulisz's(1997) and Kim et al.(2000) are suggested representatively, theoretical formulation for nonlinear wave pressure is not developed yet. And experimental results of Sulisz(1997) revealed that nonlinear uplift pressure on the caisson may be produced largely on the case of caisson founded on the high rubble mound. From the results of this study, the nonlinear theory for the uplift wave pressure acting on the caisson by applying boundary integral method of Green theorem is formulated, and also the characteristics of nonlinear uplift pressure and run-up height on the caisson are evaluated numerically, according to the variations of hydraulic properties of the rubble mound.

  • There are concerns on possible health effects from exposure to electromagnetic fields. One reflection of this concerns is the considerable controversy, delay, and cost increases involved in the construction of power lines and facilities. To cope with such challenges, in this paper we investigated magnetic fields reduction techniques such as general compaction, in' span compaction, cruciform, vertical, 3 way splits phase, and 4way splits phase. As results, we found general compaction and 4 way splits phase could reduce magnetic fields up to 90%, while cruciform, vertical, and 3 way splits phase gave lower reduction rates of 30% because these configurations were similar to a current type of low reactance arrangement. We also knew 1 spacer in span compaction was appropriate in Korea in view of effectiveness and economy.
