In the companion paper (Lee et al., 2012), it was showed that CMAQ simulation using a lateral boundary conditions (LBCs) derived from RAQMS-CMAQ linkage, compared to the CMAQ results with the default CMAQ LBCs, improved ozone simulations in the conterminous US domain. In the present paper, the study is extended to investigate the influence of LBCs on PM2.5 simulation. MM5-SMOKE-CMAQ modeling system was used for meteorological field generation, emissions preparation and air quality simulations, respectively. Realtime Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) model assimilated with satellite observations were used to generate the CMAQ-ready LBCs. CMAQ PM2.5 simulations with RAQMS LBCs and predefined LBCs were compared with U.S. EPA Air Quality System (AQS) measurements. Mean PM2.5 lateral boundary conditions taken from RAQMS outputs showed strong variations both in the horizontal grid and vertical layers in the northern and western boundaries and affected the results of CMAQ PM2.5 predictions. CMAQ with RAQMS LBCs could improve CMAQ PM2.5 predictions resulting in the improvement of index of agreement from 0.38 to 0.63.
We have estimated the vertical column density (VCD) of formaldehyde (HCHO) on a global scale using a multiple linear regression method (MRM) with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. HCHO VCDs were estimated in regions of biogenic, pyrogenic, and anthropogenic emissions using independent variables, including $NO_2$ VCD, land surface temperature (LST), an enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and the mean fire radiative power (MFRP), which are strongly correlated with HCHO. To evaluate the HCHO estimates obtained using the MRM, we compared estimates of HCHO VCD data measured by OMI ($HCHO_{OMI}$) with those estimated by multiple linear regression equations (MRE) ($HCHO_{MRE}$). Good MRM performances were found, having the average statistical values (R = 0.91, slope = 1.03, mean bias = $-0.12{\times}10^{15}molecules\;cm^{-2}$, percent difference = 11.27%) between $HCHO_{MRE}$ and $HCHO_{OMI}$ in our study regions where high HCHO levels are present. Our results demonstrate that the MRM can be a useful tool for estimating atmospheric HCHO levels.
A Multiple Regression Method (MRM) is used for the first time with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to estimate formaldehyde (HCHO) Vertical Column Density (VCD). For a 3.5-year period from January 2005 through July 2008, HCHO VCD estimation is investigated in cities over Asia in two categorized areas: (1) Major cities in Northeast Asia (Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo), (2) Major cities in Southeast Asia (New Delhi, Dhaka, and Bangkok). In the Major cities in Northeast Asia, there are good agreements between HCHO estimated by the multiple linear regression method ($HCHO_{MRM}$) and HCHO measured by OMI ($HCHO_{OMI}$) (0.78 < $R^2$ < 0.82). However, in Major cities in Southeast Asia, there were poor agreements between $HCHO_{OMI}$ and $HCHO_{MRM}$ (0.24 < $R^2$ < 0.39). In addition, an unbiased assessment of the MRM performance using modeling and validation groups shows that the performance of the MRM based on separate modeling and validation groups is comparable to that using all the data for deriving Multiple Regression Equations (MREs). This study demonstrates that MRM can be an alternative tool for HCHO estimation in certain areas over Asia.
Aerosol optical properties as well as vertical location of layer can alter the radiative balance of the Earth by reflecting and absorbing solar radiation. In this study, radiative transfer model (RTM) and satellite-based analysis have been used to quantify the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative effect of aerosol layers in the cloudy atmosphere of the northeast Asia. RTM simulation results show that the atmospheric warming effect of aerosols increases with their height in the presence of underlying cloud layer. This relationship is higher for stronger absorbing aerosols and higher surface albedo condition. Over study region ($20-50^{\circ}N$, $110-140^{\circ}E$) and aerosol event cases, it is possible to qualitatively identify absorbing aerosol effects in the presence of clouds by combining the UV Absorbing Aerosol Index (AAI) derived from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), cloud parameters derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS), with TOA Upward Shortwave Flux (USF) from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES). As the regional-mean radiative effect of aerosols, 6 - 26 % lower the USF between aerosols and cloud cover is taken into account. These results demonstrate the importance of estimation for the accurate quantification of aerosol's direct and indirect effect.
In the Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA) photochemical air pollutants, nitrogenic compound and particulate matters have increased substantially due to mobile sources, power plants and so on. Therefore 'Special Act on Seoul Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement' was enacted on 2003 in order to improve air quality in the SMA. According to the Special Act, Central and local government have developed the state implementation plan(SIP) to reduce air pollutant emissions from various local sources. One of the key elements of the SIP development is the air quality modeling since modeling results can be used to establish emissions control strategies as well as to demonstrate attainment of air quality goals for ozone, particulate matter, and so on. Air quality modeling, therefore, can be usefully utilized to investigate the effects of government's efforts according to control strategies or measures. Using the air quality model, we can determine whether the implementation plan should be revised or not. A number of questions, however, has been raised concerning accuracy, consistency and transparency of modeling results because if we do not trust modeling results, all the measures dependent on modeling becomes in vain. So, without dealing with these questions, we can not guarantee the reliability and utilizability of air quality modeling results. In this study, we tried to establish standard methodology for air quality modeling in order to ensure consistency and transparency of modeling results used in the development and evaluation of national air policy. For this purpose, we established air quality modeling guideline to provide or recommend modeling procedures, vertical and horizontal domains, input data of meteorological and air quality modeling and so on.

New alternative refrigerants have been developed due to the ozone layer depletion and global warming. For this reason, carbon dioxide is believed to be a promising refrigerant for use in air conditioners and heat pumps. Evaporative heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop of $CO_2$ with outer diameter of 5 mm in inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes have been investigated by the experiments with respect to several test conditions such as mass fluxes, heat fluxes, evaporation temperatures in this study. The inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes with length of 1.44 m were installed to measure the evaporative heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ and heat was supplied to the refrigerant by direct heating method where the test tube was uniformly heated by electricity. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes from 212 to $656\;kg/m^2s$, heat fluxes from 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and evaporation temperatures from -10 to $20^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are slightly increased with increasing mass flux, and the heat transfer characteristics in the inclined ($45^{\circ}$) tubes are enhanced about $5{\sim}10%$ compared with those in horizontal or vertical tubes.

Hydrogen peroxide is a reservoir of OH radical which is the powerful oxidant in the atmosphere. Therefore, the status of the oxidizing atmosphere could be reflected on the concentration of $H_{2}O_{2}$. In this study, the distribution of $H_{2}O_{2}$ was determined during the intensive aircraft measurements over the Yellow sea in March, December 2002, April, November 2003 and March, October 2004. Flights covered from $124^{circ}E\;to\;129^{circ}E\;and\;35^{circ}N\;to\;37^{circ}N$, and extending to 3,000 m. The flight patterns were set properly to assess the altitudinal and longitudinal distribution for $H_{2}O_{2}$. $H_{2}O_{2}$ was extracted onto aqueous solution using a continuously flowing glass coil and analyzed by a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) accompanied with a fluorescence detector using postcolumn enzyme derivatization. Mixing ratios of $O_{3},\;NO_{x}\;and\;SO_{2}$ were measured in real time by commercial analysis instruments. Along the heights, the maximum concentration of $H_{2}O_{2}$ appeared around 1,500 m then gradually decreased with increasing altitude. The vertical behavior of ozone showed the similar trend to $H_{2}O_{2}$. The mean mixing ratio of $NO_{x}$ was about 2 ppbv and not showed clear vertical distribution patterns. The mean value of was the same as $NO_{x}$ however $SO_{2}$ appeared extreme concentration in low altitude. $H_{2}O_{2}\;and\;O_{3}$ showed even longitudinal distribution however $NO_{x}$ mixing ratio in land ($127^{circ}E$) was much higher than over the sea. $SO_{2}$ rather decreased with increasing longitude. $H_{2}O_{2}$ was in inverse proportion to $NO_{x}$ in spring and summer and $SO_{2}$ in spring, which indicated its significant role to NO and $SO_{2}$ oxidation pathways.
We, for the first time, retrieved tropospheric nitrogen dioxide ($Trop.NO_2$) vertical column density (VCD) from ground-based instrument, Pandora, using the optical density fitting based on Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS)in Seoul for the period from May 2014 to December 2014. The $Trop.NO_2$ VCDs retrieved from Pandora were compared with those obtained from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). A correlation coefficient (R) between those retrieved from Pandora and those obtained from OMI is 0.55. To compare with surface $NO_2$ VMRs obtained from in-situ, Trop. $NO_2$ VCDs retrieved from Pandora and those obtained from OMI are converted into $NO_2$ VMRs in boundary layer (BLH $NO_2$ VMRs) using data measured from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). Surface $NO_2$ VMRs obtained from in-situ range from 5.5 ppbv to 61.5 ppbv. BLH $NO_2$ VMRs retrieved from Pandora and OMI range from 2.1 ppbv to 44.2 ppbv and from 0.9 ppbv to 11.6 ppbv, respectively. The range of BLH $NO_2$ VMRs retrieved from OMI is narrower than that of BLH $NO_2$ VMRs retrieved from Pandora and surface $NO_2$ VMRs obtained from in-situ. There is a batter correlation between surface $NO_2$ VMRs obtained from in-situ and BLH $NO_2$ VMRs retrieved from Pandora (R= 0.50)than the correlation between surface $NO_2$ VMRs obtained from in-situ and BLH $NO_2$ VMRs retrieved from OMI (R = 0.36). This poor correlation is thought to be due to the lower near-surface sensitivity of the satellite-based instrument (OMI) than Pandora, the ground-based instrument.

To investigate the exchange rates of mercury(Hg) across soil-air boundary, we undertook the measurements of Hg flux using gradient technique from a major waste reclamation site, Nan-Ji-Do. Based on these measurement data, we attempted to provide insights into various aspects of Hg exchange in a strongly polluted soil environment. According to our analysis, the study site turned out to be not only a major emission source area but also a major sink area. When these data were compared on hourly basis over a full day scale, large fluxes of emission and deposition centered on daytime periods relative to nighttime periods. However, when comparison of frequency with which emission or deposition occurs was made, there emerged a very contrasting pattern. While emission was dominant during nighttime periods, deposition was most favored during daytime periods. When similar comparison was made as a function of wind direction, it was noticed that there may be a major Hg source at easterly direction to bring out significant deposition of Hg in the study area. To account for the environmental conditions controlling the vertical direction of Hg exchange, we compared environmental conditions for both the whole data group and those observed from the wind direction of strong deposition events. Results of this analysis indicated that the concentrations of pollutant species varied sensitively enough to reflect the environmental conditions for each direction of exchange. When correlation analysis was applied to our data, results indicated that windspeed and ozone concentrations best reflected changes in the magnitudes of emission/deposition fluxes. The results of factor analysis also indicated the possibility that Hg emission of study area is temperature-driven process, while that of deposition is affected by a mixed effects of various factors including temperature, ozone, and non-methane HCs. If the computed emission rate is extrapolated to the whole study area we estimate that annual emission of Hg from the study area can amount to approximately 6kg.

We, for the first time, estimated daily and monthly surface nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) volume mixing ratio (VMR) using three regression models with $NO_2$ tropospheric vertical column density (OMIT-rop $NO_2$ VCD) data obtained from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) in Seoul in South Korea at OMI overpass time (13:45 local time). First linear regression model (M1) is a linear regression equation between OMI-Trop $NO_2$ VCD and in situ $NO_2$ VMR, whereas second linear regression model (M2) incorporates boundary layer height (BLH), temperature, and pressure obtained from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and OMI-Trop $NO_2$ VCD. Last models (M3M & M3D) are a multiple linear regression equations which include OMI-Trop $NO_2$ VCD, BLH and various meteorological data. In this study, we determined three types of regression models for the training period between 2009 and 2011, and the performance of those regression models was evaluated via comparison with the surface $NO_2$ VMR data obtained from in situ measurements (in situ $NO_2$ VMR) in 2012. The monthly mean surface $NO_2$ VMRs estimated by M3M showed good agreements with those of in situ measurements(avg. R = 0.77). In terms of the daily (13:45LT) $NO_2$ estimation, the highest correlations were found between the daily surface $NO_2$ VMRs estimated by M3D and in-situ $NO_2$ VMRs (avg. R = 0.55). The estimated surface $NO_2$ VMRs by three modelstend to be underestimated. We also discussed the performance of these empirical modelsfor surface $NO_2$ VMR estimation with respect to otherstatistical data such asroot mean square error (RMSE), mean bias, mean absolute error (MAE), and percent difference. This present study shows a possibility of estimating surface $NO_2$ VMR using the satellite measurement.
