This paper analyzes the handover latency of Mobile IP and mobile SCTP over IPv6 networks. The analytical results are compared with the performance by experiment over Linux testbed. For analysis, we consider the two handover scenarios: horizontal handover and vertical handover. From the results, we see that mSCTP can provide smaller handover latency than Mobile IP. Moreover, mSCTP can give much smaller handover latency for vertical handover, compared to horizontal handover.
This paper proposes a mobile SCTP (mSCTP) handover scheme for vertical handover between 3G wireless and WiBro networks. To evaluate the proposed mSCTP vertical handover scheme, we implement the mSCTP handover supporting system over Linux platform in which the movement of a mobile node is automatically detected and the mSCTP vertical handover is performed by the mobile node. We analyze and compare the performance of mSCTP handover and Mobile IP handover over the preconfigured testbed. From the numerical results, we can see that the handover latency of mSCTP could be much more reduced, compared to the Mobile IP handover, if the mobile node would sojourn long enough in the overlapping region between the two heterogeneous networks.

Nowadays, wireless packet data services are provided over Wireless MAN (WMAN) at a high data service rate, while 3G cellular networks provide wide-area coverage at a low data service rate. The integration of mobile WiMAX and 3G networks is essential, to serve users requiring both high-speed wireless access as well as wide-area connectivity. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer optimization scheme for a vertical handover between mobile WiMAX and 3G cellular networks. More specifically, L2 (layer 2) and L3 (layer 3) signaling messages for a vertical handover are analyzed and reordered/combined, to optimize the handover procedure. Extensive simulations using ns-2 demonstrate that the proposed scheme enhances the performance of a vertical handover between mobile WiMAX and 3G networks: low handover latency, high TCP throughput, and low UDP packet loss ratio.

This paper proposes a multihoming-based vertical handover scheme using Proxy binding update to minimize handover delay and packet loss while a mobile node moves to a heterogeneous access network. When a mobile node moves to a heterogeneous access network, the proposed scheme can provide a mobile node with fast and seamless handover by performing layer-3 handover using its new interface while the other interface is still communicating in the old access network. The proposed Proxy binding update is different from the Mobile IP binding update in that it includes home addres (HoA) of the old interface instead of the new interface. The performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme can efficiently reduce vertical handover delay and packet loss.

Streaming video has become a popular form of transferring media over the wired/wireless network. TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) is used as a streaming media transport protocol. Using the TCP congestion response function and current network conditions, TFRC adjusts its sending rate to yield the maximum TCP-friendly throughput. Since TFRC was designed for applications that would prefer to maintain a slowly-changing sending rate, it is less responsive to changes in handover between wireless heterogeneous networks such as 3G network, WLAN, and so on. This paper shows a new TFRC method for vertical handover over wireless heterogeneous network. The proposed TFRC method has features of low quality interruption and fast rate adaptation to a new target network. The simulation results show that the proposed one provides better QoS and throughput support than the traditional TFRC scheme during vertical handover.

For vertical handover, the part for the homogeneous handover needs to be modified, which allows users to utilize the various wireless access schemes with a mobile terminal with PFMIPv6. In this paper, we considered a cross-layer design for fast vertical handover between MIH and PFMIPv6, where two MIH-layer messages are suggested to reduce handover latency and integrate between MIH and PFMIPv6 efficiently. The proposed scheme is evaluated with handover latency. The results show that the proposed handover procedure reduces handover latency compared with the existing one.

With the advances in wireless communication technologies, mobile users require to get seamless services anywhere and anytime. To relize these demands, network interworking and vertical handover are necessary between heterogeneous wireless access technologies with multi-interface mobile station. A lot of organizations are doing research on the network integration schemes based on loosely and tightly integrated architectures, and research on vertical handover schemes mainly based on Mobile IP in loosely integrated environments. But actually, the tightly integrated scheme can support more faster vertical handover because heterogeneous access networks are combined tightly. However, vertical handover schemes in tightly integrated environments are conceptually proposed without any detail signaling procedures. Therefore, this paper defines a tightly integrated architecture between UMTS and WLAN, and proposes a soft vertical handover signaling procedure. The proposed soft vertical handover scheme is evaluated by the OPNET simulator, and we confirm the proposed scheme can support seamless services.

This paper proposes a new fast vertical handover mechanism to optimize and enhance the existing fast vertical handover HMIPv6(FV-HMIP) mechanism in heterogeneous wireless access networks. The proposed mechanism ad opts the IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover Function(MIHF), and thus is called the "MFV-HMIP". The Media Independent Handover Service (MIIS) in the IEEE 802.21 MIHF is extended by including new L3 inform ation to provide domain prefixes of heterogeneous neighbouring mobility anchor points(MAPs). This can eliminate the heterogeneous neighbouring MAP discovery phase in the existing FV-HMIP. Thus, the proposed MFV-HMIP can reduce the signalling traffic over wireless link and increase the possibility of predictive mode operation. Therefore, the proposed MFV-HMIP mechanism can be superior to the existing FV-HMIP mechanism for wireless resource efficiency, handover latency, and packet loss. Through analytic performance evaluations and computer si mulations, the proposed mechanism can be shown to optimize and enhance the existing mechanism.

It is necessary for maritime multi-band networks, which provide ships with diverse and seamless multimedia services, to perform vertical handover. As IEEE 802.21 WG has standardized vertical handover technologies for terrestrial wireless networks that do not consider VHF, HF, satellite networks, they cannot be directly applied to maritime multi-band networks. In this paper, the vertical handover framework for use in maritime mutlti-band networks is proposed, which includes the logical architecture, the communication reference model, re-defined handover primitives, and the handover process. The proposed vertical handover for maritime multi-band network can be applied in the ocean alone, as well as to the heterogeneous wireless networks which embrace both terrestrial and maritime networks.
A handover is a technology that enables data transmission and receipt seamlessly while a mobile station moves from the current base station to another base station. The handover is basically classified into two types; a horizontal handover which changes a radio link only without changing a network link, and a vertical handover which changes both in heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we propose a vertical handover protocol in a dual base station which supports both of W-CDMA and WiBro networks based on SDR (Software Defined Radio), verify the rightness using a state transition diagram and a Petri-net, and evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol using NS-2 simulator.
