Analysis of the West Coast Heavy Snowfall Development Mechanism from 23 to 25 January 2016 (2016년 1월 23일~25일에 발생한 서해안 대설 발달 메커니즘 분석)

  • This study examined the lake effect of the Yellow Sea which was induced by the Siberian High pressure system moving over the open waters. The development mechanism of the convective cells over the ocean was studied in detail using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. Numerical experiments consist of the control experiment (CTL) and an experiment changing the yellow sea to dry land (EXP). The CTL simulation result showed distinct high area of relative vorticity, convergence and low-level atmospheric instability than that of the EXP. The result indicates that large surface vorticity and convergence induced vertical motion and low level instability over the ocean when the arctic Siberian air mass moved south over the Yellow Sea. The sensible heat flux at the sea surface gradually decreased while latent heat flux gradually increased. At the beginning stage of air mass modification, sensible heat was the main energy source for convective cell generation. However, in the later stage, latent heat became the main energy source for the development of convective cells. In conclusion, the mechanism of the west coast heavy snowfall caused by modification of the Siberian air mass over the Yellow Sea can be explained by air-sea interaction instability in the following order: (a) cyclonic vorticity caused by diabatic heating induce Ekman pumping and convergence at the surface, (b) sensible heat at the sea surface produce convection, and (c) this leads to latent heat release, and the development of convective cells. The overall process is a manifestation of air-sea interaction and enhancement of convection from positive feedback mechanism.

Mean Meridional Circulation-Eddy Interaction in Three Reanalysis Data Sets during the Boreal Winter (세 가지 재분석 자료에서의 겨울철 북반구 평균 자오면 순환-에디 상호작용)

  • The present study examines an interaction between the eddy and mean meridional circulation (MMC) comparing the results in three reanalysis data sets including ERA-Interim, NCEP2, and JRA-55 during the boreal winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It is noteworthy that the JRA-55 tends to produce stronger MMC compared to those of others, which is mainly due to the weak eddy flux. ERA-Interim represents the ensemble averages of MMC. The MMC-eddy interaction equation was adopted to investigate the scale interaction of the eddy momentum flux (EMF), eddy heat flux (EHF), and diabatic heating (DHT) with MMC. The EMF (EHF) shows a significant correlation coefficient with streamfunction under (above) 200 hPa-level. The perturbation (time mean) part of each eddy is dominant compared to another part in the EMF (EHF). The DHT is strongly interacted with streamfunction in the region between the equator and extra-tropical latitude over whole vertical column. Thus, the dominant term in each significant region modulates interannual variability of MMC. The inverse (proportional) relationship between MMC and pressure (meridional) derivative of the momentum (heat) divergence contributions is well represented in the three reanalysis data sets. The region modulated interannual variability of MMC by both EMF and DHT (EHF) is similar in ERA-Interim and JRA-55 (ERA-Interim and NCEP2). JRA-55 shows a lack of significant region of EHF due to the high resolution, compared to other data sets.

Soil arching analysis in embankments on soft clays reinforced by stone columns

  • The present work investigates the behavior of the embankment models resting on soft soil reinforced with ordinary and stone columns encased with geogrid. Model tests were performed with different spacing distances between stone columns and two lengths to diameter ratios (L/d) of the stone columns, in addition to different embankment heights. A total number of 42 model tests were carried out on a soil with undrianed shear strength $${\sim_\sim}10kPa$$. The models consist of stone columns embankment at s/d equal to 2.5, 3 and 4 with L/d ratio equal 5 and 8. Three embankment heights; 200 mm, 250 mm and 300 mm were tested for both tests of ordinary (OSC) and geogrid encased stone columns (ESC). Three earth pressure cells were used to measure directly the vertical effective stress on column at the top of the middle stone column under the center line of embankment and on the edge stone column for all models while the third cell was placed at the base of embankment between two columns to measure the vertical effective stress in soft soil directly. The performance of stone columns embankments relies upon the ability of the granular embankment material to arch over the 'gaps' between the stone columns spacing. The results showed that the ratio of the embankment height to the clear spacing between columns (h/s-d) is a key parameter. It is found that (h/s-d)<1.2 and 1.4 for OSC and ESC, respectively; (h is the embankment height, s is the spacing between columns and d is the diameter of stone columns), no effect of arching is pronounced, the settlement at the surface of the embankment is very large, and the stress acting on the subsoil is virtually unmodified from the nominal overburden stress. When $(h/s-d){\geq}2.2$ for OSC and ESC respectively, full arching will occur and minimum stress on subsoil between stone columns will act, so the range of critical embankment height will be 1.2 (h/sd) to 2.2 (h/s-d) for both OSC and ESC models.

  • In order to get ultimate pullout resistance of ground anchor, the position of failure surface, normal stress and friction angle on the failure surface should be known. In this study, the position of failure surface is obtained by observing deformation of ground around anchor, and stresses on the anchor surface are analyzed by measuring normal and shear stresses on the anchor surface through model anchor test in plane strain. In addition, the relationship between lateral earth pressure and the position of failure surface is analyzed and the formula for calculating ultimate pullout resistance of anchor is proposed by using non-dimensional coefficient of ultimate pullout resistance.

  • The behavior of the ground in crossed zone due to the excavation of new lower tunnel rectangularly crossed to that was studied by model tests and numerical analysis in shallow cover. Results of the model tests show that earth pressure of the ground in crossed zone were redistributed due to the longitudinal arching effect by the excavation of lower tunnel. By the numerical analysis, minimum principal stress in crown of single tunnel has more decrease than parallel tunnel or crossed tunnel. Vertical stress at rectangularly crossed tunnel decrease more than single tunnel by stress shadow.

The Prediction of Side Thrust Generated by Grousers Under Track (그라우저에 의해 발생되는 궤도의 측면추진력 예측)

  • This study was conducted to develop the mathmatical model for predicting the side thrust which is generated by the shearing action on the vertical surfaces of the sides of the track. Experiments were conducted with the three different shear plates with grouser length of 1, 3 and 5 cm for two different soil condition using soil bin system. The measured side thrust were compared with the values predicted by the new model developed in this study and by Bekker's model respectively. The values of side thrust predicted by the new model were more close to the measured values than those of the side thrust predicted by Bekker's model . The total thrust measured were also compared with the values predicted by the conventional model which considers only bottom thrust effect and by the new model which contains not only bottom thurst but side thrust effect. The values of the thrust predicted by conventional modelwere lower than measured values for both of the soil conditions and the three levels of grouser length. The maximum errors of conventional model were increased with the increase of grouser length. but the values of the total thrust predicted by the model developed in this study were well matched to the measured ones for both of the soil conditions and the three levels of grouser lengths.

  • The concrete pipe used to distribute irrigation water to the right place now available is commonly made up of cement , sand, earth, pebble, etc. These materials with right ratio and right amount of water were mixed and squeezed through the pipe-making machine called vertical squeezed pipe-making machine, and then a cement prefabricated pipe is produced . This kinds of pipe has been expanding by leaps and bounds. Being little cement contents and low cost, the length of pipe is 1.0m or so with weight of 50kg, which is easy to be made and to be transported. The demolish pressure of it is 0.2 MPa or so, which meets the needs of agriculture irrigation . The buried pipe irrigation system, has been popularized in Jining Municipal , Shandong Province. By the year of 1995 , the irrigation area under pipe conveyancesystem usign this type of pipe has reached 74000 hectares. By calculation, about 27.7million ㎥ water, 2.88 million kWh power , 0.167 million man power and 1528 hectares cu tivated land will be saved one year, adding value of agriculture output increased by 10 million kg. The total economic benefits amount to 0.92 million US$ a year. The paper presents the pipe making course and its application on a large scale area.

A Case Study of Strong Wind Event over Yeongdong Region on March 18-20, 2020 (2020년 3월 18일-20일 영동지역 강풍 사례 연구)

  • This study investigates the synoptic (patterns of southern highs, northern lows, and lows rapidly developed by tropopause folding), thermodynamic, and kinematic characteristics of a strong wind that occurred in the Yeongdong region of South Korea on March 18-20, 2020. To do so, we analyzed data from an automatic weather station (AWS), weather charts, the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis, rawinsonde, and windprofiler radars. The daily maximum instantaneous wind speed, exceeding 20 m s-1, was observed at five weather stations during the analysis period. The strongest instantaneous wind speed (27.7 m s-1) appeared in the Daegwallyeong area. According to the analysis of weather charts, along with the arrangement of the north-south low-pressure line, the isobars were moved to the Yeongdong area. It showed a sine wave shape, and a strong wind developed owing to the strong pressure gradient. On March 19, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, with a drop in atmospheric pressure of 19 hPa or more within one day, a continuous strong wind was developed by the synoptic structure of the developing polar low. In the adiabatic chart observed in Bukgangneung, the altitude of the inversion layer was located at an altitude of approximately 1-3 km above the mountaintop, along with the maximum wind speed. We confirmed that this is consistent with the results of the vertical wind field analysis of the rawinsonde and windprofiler data. In particular, based on the thermodynamic and kinematic vertical analyses, we suggest that strong winds due to the vertical gradient of potential temperature in the lower layer and the development of potential vorticity due to tropopause folding play a significant role in the occurrence of strong winds in the Yeongdong region.

Numerical study on basal heave stability of a circular vertical shaft constructed in clay (연약 점성토 지반에 시공되는 원형 수직구의 히빙 안정성에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • When vertical shafts are constructed in soft clay with low strength, there is a risk of basal heave, which causes the excavation surface to heave due to the low bearing capacity of the ground against the imbalance of earth pressure at the excavation surface. Methods of deriving a safety factor have been proposed to evaluate the stability against the basal heave. However, there are limitations in that it is difficult to accurately evaluate the heave stability because many assumptions are included in the theoretical derivation. In this study, assuming that a circular vertical shaft is constructed in soft clay, the existing safety factor equation proposed through a theoretical approach was supplemented. Bearing capacity according to the shaft geometry, inhomogeneity of the soil, and the effect of soil plug were considered theoretically and applied in a previous safety factor equation. A three-dimensional numerical analysis was conducted to simulate the occurrence of basal heave and review the supplemented equation through various case studies. Several series of case studies were conducted targeting various factors affecting heave stability. It was verified that the additionally considered characteristics were properly reflected in the supplemented equation. Furthermore, the effects of each factor constituting the safety factor equation were examined using the results of the numerical analysis performed by simulating various cases. It was confirmed that considering the undrained shear strength increment according to depth had the most significant effect on the calculation of the safety factor.

Centrifuge Model Experiments for Lateral Soil Movements of Piled Bridge Abutments. (교대말뚝기초의 측방유동에 관한 원심모형실험)

  • This paper is an experimental result of investigating lateral soil movements at piled bridge abutments by using the centrifuge model facility. Three different centrifuge model experiments, changing the methods of ground improvement at bridge abutment on the soft clayey soil (no improvement, preconsolidation and plastic board drains (PBD), sand compaction pile (SCP) + PBD), were carried out to figure out which method is the most appropriate for resisting against the lateral soil movements. In the centrifuge modelling, construction process in field was reconstructed as close as possible. Displacements of abutment model, ground movement, vertical earth pressure, cone resistance after soil improvement and distribution of water content were monitored during and after centrifuge model tests. As results of centrifuge model experiments, preconsolidation method with PBD was found to be the most effective against the lateral soil movement by analyzing results about displacements of abutment model, ground movement and cone resistance. Increase of shear strength by preconsolidation method resulted in increasing the resistance against lateral soil movement effectively although SCP could mobilize the resistance against lateral soil movement. It was also found that installment with PBD beneath the backfill of bridge abutment induced effective drainage of excess pore water pressure during the consolidation by embanking at the back of the abutment and resulted in increasing the shear strength of clay soil foundation and eventually increasing the resistance of lateral soil movement against piles of bridge abutment.
