  • In this study, we investigate the liquid crystal (LC) alignment of LC cells created from plant-based polysaccharide derivatives, such as guar gum. Guar gum films exhibit satisfactorily high optical transparency in the visible light region (400-750 nm). For example, the transmittance of polyimide films, which are the most typically used LC alignment layers, is 87%, whereas that of guar gum films deposited onto a glass substrate at a wavelength of 550 nm is approximately 99%. The observed LC alignment depends on the rubbing depth. For example, an LC cell comprising a guar gum film fabricated via rubbing at rubbing depths of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mm exhibits a planar LC alignment, whereas it exhibits a vertical LC alignment at a rubbing depth of 0.5 mm. Additionally, the LC alignment is shown to be correlated with the total surface energy of the guar gum films. When the total surface energy of a rubbed guar gum film exceeds 58.10 mJ/m2, an LC cell comprising the guar gum film exhibits a stable and vertical LC alignment. Therefore, guar gum can be used to realize the vertical alignment system of LC via a simple adjustment of the rubbing depth.

  • This paper reports our observation that the addition of nanoparticles in the negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal (LC) cell can exhibit the properties of vertical alignment without using alignment layers. The electro-optical properties of this nanoparticles-induced vertical alignment in the LC cell are very similar to the conventional homeotropic LC cell with alignment layers. This technique can be used to fabricate a flexible LC display demanding low temperature process

  • Alignment characteristic of liquid crystal (LC) on in-cell retarder which is composed of reactive mesogens has been tested. The in-cell retarder which is polymerized on top of the homogeneous alignment layer (AL) has an optic axis along the rubbing direction of the homeogenous AL and does show good alignment effect of the LC without showing any defects, which possibly allows a skip of another AL on the in-cell retarder that was required conventionally to control alignment of the LC. However, the measured pretilt angle is only 0.04 degree so that disclination lines are generated for a cell that uses the in-cell retarder as an AL when the LC is tilted upward by a vertical electric field.

  • We propose an optical configuration of a vertical alignment (VA) liquid crystal (LC) cell to eliminate the light leakage in the diagonal direction. VA LC cell has an excellent contrast ratio in the normal direction due to the no phase-retardation. However, change of the phase-retardation occurs in all directions, which causes the light leakage and deteriorates the characteristics of the dark state. We designed the LC cell structure composed of multiple combinations with two A-plates and two C-plates in order to achieve wide viewing property on the Poincare sphere. From calculations, we show that the proposed structure can improve the viewing angle characteristics by compensating for the light leakage in all directions.

  • In this paper, we investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of liquid crystals (LCs) on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). For comparison, a commercialized homeotropic polyimide (PI) layer was used as an LC alignment layer. We confirmed the successful deposition of FSAMs and the change of FSAMs before and after rubbing treatment through contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy. The optical transmittance spectrum of the FSAMs is similar to that of the homeotropic PI layer, which is a superior optical characteristic applicable to LC devices. When FSAMs were applied to the vertically aligned (VA) LC cell, uniform and vertical LC alignments were achieved. In addition, the voltage-transmittance characteristic of VA LC cell with FSAMs was superior to that of VA LC cell with the conventional homeotropic PI layers. These results indicate that the FSAMs are suitable as the homeotropic LC alignment layer for enhanced LC devices.

  • Injection time of liquid crystal (LC) by capillary action in a vertically aligned (VA) nematic LC cell takes longer than that in a homogeneously aligned (HA) LC cell because Miesowicz viscosity in the former is bigger than that in the latter. To reduce liquid crystal injection time in the VA cell, we applied vertical electric field while injecting so that the orientation of LC molecules is changed from vertical alignment to homogeneous alignment. Consequently, the injection speed is improved by 25 % when compared with the cell without an applied field.

  • In this paper we propose a novel electrode structure for high transmittance in the Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) LC cell. Normally, the transmittance of PVA LC cell is depended on the shape of the electrode and cell gap. We studied the area decreasing the transmittance through the electrode structure for wide viewing angle and proposed new electrode design to change LC director configuration in the area. We use the 'TechWiz LCD' for calculation of the director configuration and optical characteristics. We show the comparison of the calculated optical transmittance between the conventional PVA mode and the proposed PVA mode. From the results, we confirm that the optical transmittance of the proposed structure of the PVA cell becomes higher.

  • We propose an optical configuration for a vertical alignment (VA) liquid crystal (LC) cell to eliminate the off-axis light leakage in the dark state. The proposed compensation configuration consists of a positive A-film, a positive C-film and a negative C-film. The optical design is performed on a Poincar$\acute{e}$ sphere. This configuration has a better tolerance to the wavelength dispersion, as the polarization trace could self-compensate it. From calculations, we show that the proposed VA LC cell can improve the viewing angle characteristics by compensating for the light leakage in the diagonal direction.

  • The electro-optical (EO) performances of a multidomain vertical-alignment (MVA) cell on a homeotropic photopolymer have been investigated. In the absence of an electric field, the MVA cell achieved black state as LC alignment is homeotropic. An electric field created by interdigitated electrodes and rib made after photolithograph using the photopolymer on both substrates causes a director deformation of a multidomain type. Good voltage-transmittance curves for a MVA cell on the homeotropic photopolymer were observed. Also, the stable response time of MVA cell on the homeotropic photopolymer can be achieved.

  • A symmetric-viewing inverse-twisted-nematic (ITN) liquid crystal display (LCD) with alternating alignment layers was developed using a stamping-assisted rubbing (SAR) technique. A patterned layer of a fluorinated acrylate polymer was transferred onto the first rubbed vertical-alignment layer prepared on a substrate by stamping. The fluorinated acrylate polymer provided a protective layer covering the first rubbed alignment layer during the second rubbing process, which promoted the vertical alignment of the LC molecules. The LC cell in the ITN geometry with two orthogonally rubbed alignment layers showed symmetric-viewing characteristics with fourfold symmetry. The SAR technique was shown to be a mask-free alignment method of producing multidomains for symmetric-viewing LCDs.
