A reliable and accurate method has been developed to predict the flexural deformation response of structural concrete members subject to service load. The method that has been developed relates the extent of concrete cracking, measured as a function of the magnitude of applied moment in a member, to the reduction in the effective moment of inertia of cracked reinforced concrete members under service load conditions. The ratio of the area of the moment diagram where the moment exceeds the cracking moment, to the total area of the moment diagram for any loading, provides the basis for the calculation of the effective moment of inertia. This ratio also represents mathematically a probability of crack occurrence. Verification of this method for the determination of the effective moment of inertia has been achieved from an experimental test program, and has included beam tests with different loading configurations, and shear wall tests subjected to a range of vertical and lateral load levels. Further verification of this method has been made with reference to the experimental investigation of other recently published work.
The behavior of shear-wall dominant, low-rise, multistory reinforced concrete building structures is investigated. Because there are no beams or columns and the slab and wall thicknesses are approximately equal, available codes give little information relative to design for gravity and lateral loads. Items which effect the analysis of shear-wall dominant building structures, i.e., material nonlinearity including rotating crack capability, 3-D behavior, slab-wall interaction, floor flexibilities, stress concentrations around openings, the location and the amount of main discrete reinforcement are investigated. For this purpose 2 and 5 story building structures are modelled. To see the importance of 3-D modelling, the same structures are modelled by both 2-D and 3-D models. Loads are applied first the vertical then lateral loads which are static equivalent earthquake loads. The 3-D models of the structures are loaded in both in the longitudinal and transverse directions. A nonlinear isoparametric plate element with arbitrarily places edge nodes is adapted in order to consider the amount and location of the main reinforcement. Finally the importance of 3-D effects including the T-C coupling between walls are indicated.
Compared to metal-to-metal tribology, polymer tribology presents further complexity as it is more prone to be influenced by operating conditions. Over the past two decades, progress in the field of wear of polymers has led to the establishment of more refined wear mechanisms. The current paper establishes the link between different load parameters and the wear rate of polymers, based on experimental investigations. A pin-on-plate reciprocating tribometer was used to examine the wear behaviour of polyamide sliding against a steel counterface, under constant and fluctuating loads, in dry conditions. In addition, the influence of controlled imperfections in the polymer surface upon its wear rate were examined, under cyclic and steady loading, in order to better understand surface fatigue wear of polymers. The imposed imperfections consisted of vertical artificial deep crack (slit) perpendicular or parallel to the direction of sliding. The study concludes with the followings findings; in general, wear of polymers shows a significant tendency to the type of applied load. Under cyclic loads, polymers show an increase in wear rate compared to those tested under static loads. Such increase was found to increase with the increase in cyclic load frequency. It is also demonstrated that surface cracks results in higher wear rates, particularly under cyclic loads.
The objective of the paper is to study the impact of changing the traditional hull design of bulk carriers by providing them with a double hull while keeping the same deadweight. It is demonstrated that by introducing the double hull the structural reliability is increased throughout the entire life and also the extend of the needed repair is reduced. The results are obtained with recently developed mathematical tools for the reliability assessment of ship hulls subjected to the existence of multiple cracks both in the stiffeners and in the plating and it models the crack growth process. The effect of corrosion is represented as time dependent. The long-term stress range acting on the elements is defined as a function of the local transverse pressure of the internal cargo and outside sea water combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combineation of horizontal and vertical bending moments. The effect of maintenance actions is modelled as a stochastic process. The results show that a different design of the midship section improves the structural safety and also the economy with respect to structural repair of bulk carriers.
While the existing reinforced concrete flat plate(RC flat plate) has a lot of advantages including reduced building height, it has some weak points such as many steel bars and the brittle rupture by punching shear. Compared with the RC flat plate, the post-tensioned flat plate (PT flat plate) has not only the same merits, but it also makes longer span possible and induces slab-column connections to be failed with the ductile behavior rather than with the brittle behavior by means of post-tensioning. However, it is difficult to define the joint behavior of PT flat plate under vertical and lateral loads since there are limit experimental results. For this reason, the experimental study is undertaken to investigate the comparison of behavior of PT flat plate and RC flat plate, and how flat plate(Gravity Load Resisting System) is displaced as lateral loads, like the wind and the earthquake, are occur. The result of this experiment shows that PT flat plate is generally superior to RC flat plate in terms of controlling crack, postponing stiffness deterioration, energy dissipation, etc.
67Ni-22Cr-10Al-1Y and $ZrO_2-8Y_2O_3$ were coated on the substrate surface of ST304 and Al2024 by the plasma spraying method. The adgesion of the films varies depending on the substrates and the laminating method. In the case of STS304, the cracks were observed at thermal shock temperature difference ${Delta}T$ of $900^{circ}C$ in the non functionally gradient material(NFGM) and at $1100^{circ}C$ in the functionally gradient material(FGM). The film adhesion of the FGM is better than that of the NFGM in ST304. The cumulative AE count of the FGM of STS304 increased continuously at the bending test. But the NFGM of STS304 showed discontinuity of the AE count. The total AE count for the FGM of STS304 decreased as the number of thermal shock increased, and this tendency was evident as the thermal shock temperature difference increased.
This paper studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) pipes used in basic sanitation in the conduction of storm water and sanitary sewer. Pipes with 800 mm and 1200 mm in diameter were analyzed. The 800 mm pipes were built with simple reinforcement and the 1200 mm pipes with double reinforcement. For the two diameters of pipes the presence or absence of the pocket was evaluated, and the denomination of each one is spigot and pocket pipe (SPP) and ogee joint pipe (OJP), respectively. The 3D numerical models reproduce the three-edge-bearing test that provides information about the strength and stiffness of the reinforced concrete pipes. The validation of the computational models was carried out comparing the vertical and horizontal displacements on the springline and crown/invert and it was also evaluated the reinforcement strains and the crack pattern. As a main conclusion, the numerical models represented satisfactorily the behavior of the pipes and can be used in future studies in parametric analysis.
As regards of designing, I chose a simple wall design of repeating pattern of vertical windows, rather than making the building as a glamourous obzet. This kind of approach was intended to pursue strong image of construction company, interchanging and communicating with its confused surrounding. Therefore, I boldly removed parts that I considered needless from the facade, and used simple and easy words clearly implying the organization. Lobby is the face of the building, but since the space is deep and narrow and the reality of lease should be considered, there was limit to give original image to the lobby. Instead, high ceiling is the biggest feature of this space. Doorae Engineering-Construction Corp. is young and energetic company. I wanted to highlight the young and energetic image of the company by crossing tore oblique piece of boards. This doesn't just has a simple function as ceiling, but also work as a major subject in the space. In addition of this powerful space of oblique lines, indirect lighting is used to emphasize the character of territory, continuity and deepness of the space. Character of territory that divides main and supplementary function and main and supplementary moving line is expressed by flow of dimension, and continuity and deepness of space is emphasized by indirect lighting flowing linearly through the crack between the ceiling and the wall.
