  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of VC investment on the IPO and post-IPO performance of Chinese firms. Design/methodology/approach - By utilizing CSMAR and VentureXpert database, we construct a firm-year panel data covering all listed firms in the Chinese stock market from 2006 to 2018. Findings - First, we find that VC-backed firms are significantly less underpriced than non-VC-backed firms. Our results show that the initial IPO-day return of VC-backed firms is 0.16% lower than that of non-VC-backed firms. Next, we find that VC-backed firms demonstrate significantly worse operating performance than non-VC-backed firms after the IPO. In the next three years following the IPO, VC-backed firms underperform non-VC-backed firms by 0.4% in terms of ROA and by 0.6% in terms of ROE. Research implications or Originality - Our results support the Grandstanding Hypothesis, among several competing hypotheses regarding the effect of VC investment, which suggests that VCs window dress their IPO firms for their early exit at the expense of a poor operating performance of the IPO firms after going public.

  • We review two specific risk management strategies of venture capitalists (VCs): deal syndication and domain specialization with respect to their explicit role in adjudging and managing the overall magnitude of information asymmetry risks. These are analyzed for three distinct categories of VC firms as classified by their funding stage focus (early vs. late), ownership type (foreign vs. domestic) and the human capital composition of the core VC team (entrepreneurial vs. investor). The analysis is based on both secondary data and primary data for active 72 VC firms in India. Syndication is moderately important for entrepreneurial VC firms, but not at all important for early-stage focused and foreign VC firms. This finding is distinctly different from what has been conventionally observed in the literature. Among the various arenas of domain specialization, high-technology focus is important for all segments of VC firms. In the context of investment-stage focus, foreign VC firms exhibit growth-stage specialization, while entrepreneurial VC firms concentrate on earlier investment stages.

  • As the response to climate change becomes a more pressing global issue, so do expectations for climate change in the green information and communication technology (ICT) industry and the possibility of solving environmental problems through ICT. However, because the green ICT industry is still in its early stages, there is little research on it. Understanding the startup ecosystem in the industry is helpful for recognizing innovation trends in emerging technologies such as green ICT. In this regard, this paper investigates the current state and characteristics of the green ICT ecosystem and presents implications based on an examination of startup venture capital investment trends and submarket identification in the green ICT industry as emphasized by the carbon neutrality paradigm shift. The analysis included 4,807 companies and 3,990 funding records, as well as exploratory data analysis and "k-means" clustering techniques.

  • Since the early 2000s, many information security professionals have sought to measure the effectiveness of information security investments. Such efforts have devised a number of ways to calculate the return in ROSI (Return On Security Investment) including the Gordon & Loeb method for calculating cyber damage. However, due to the characteristics of information security structure, the lack of relate information sharing, and many qualitative factors are included, the damage calculation is inaccurate.. This study reviews related studies, analyzes the Gordon & Loeb method and the Shin-Jin method, which are considered to be the most efficient of the existing methods, and designs improved methods.

  • In this paper, we propose the valuation frame of the IT(Information Technology) ventures using ROV(Real Options Valuation) model. Generally, ROV can comprises the traditional valuation method such as DCF(Discounted Cash Flow), which can measure only the tangible value of a firm from the expected future earnings, in that ROV can additionally measure the intangible value such as the strategic value of a firm in the uncertain environment. We set up the hypothetic IT venture future investment plan and assume that there are a growth option and a switching option consequently along the investment time horizon, which are caused by each characteristics of ventures and IT technologies, especially modularity. In the case that there are several embedded real options in the firm's investment plan in a row, we should apply the compound option pricing model as a real option valuation model in order to consider the value interaction between real options. In an addition, we present the results of optimal investment timing analysis using real options approach and compare them. with those of the original assumed investment timing.

  • The guarantee funds for government policy fund, venture capital investment fund, technology guarantee debt are the core parts of the external financing system in the constant technology innovation company. However, the enterpriser's requirement to keep the technology innovation with minimized management intervention and policy maker's hope to advance technology development with clear operation of funds is enough to request for research of the project investment plan to the R&D project. This paper will analyze whether technology innovation company that creates cash flow prefers to the project investment as a financing program or not, and if prefers, what characters of company affect on this preference. The more the company that pursuit the additional R&D activity separated to on-going items becomes over the fixed size, the more prefers the project investment as future external fund-raising. Together with that, this paper suggests that we can apply the plan like special purpose vehicle, SWORD(Stock Warrant Off-Balance sheet R&D) and R&D Limited Partnership as R&D project investment policy, and improve the system itself.

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of cultural distance between partner firms on international joint venture performance, focusing on the moderating effects of the conflict resolution techniques and the competitive relationship between partner firms. We tested hypotheses based on joint venture firms that were surveyed which formed by equity investment between Korean and foreign firms in the manufacturing industry. The empirical analysis results of this study are as follows. First, in international joint ventures, the cultural distance between partner firms was found to have a negative effect on the international joint venture performance, and the higher the cultural distance, the lower the joint venture performance. Second, it was found that constructive conflict resolution techniques weaken the negative impact of the cultural distance between partner firms in international joint ventures on the performance of international joint ventures. Third, competitive relationship between international joint venture partners showed no moderating effect on the relationship between cultural distance and international joint venture performance.

  • In this paper, we study empirically examined the adventurous investments in corporate venture capital (CVC) firms' investment in the U.S. based corporate venture capital industry. Unlike existing studies focusing CVC firm's characteristics related to parent corporates and regarding CVC firm as a vehicle of corporate venturing, we identified CVC firm as an independent learning agent to adapt to dynamic environment and investigate their exploration and exploitation in investments based on organizational learning theory. Specifically, we investigate the market-environmental factors affecting CVC's adventurous investment in different sector rather than previously done. First, we examined competition intensity in CVC industry might be related to CVC firm's explorative investments. Second, CVC firm's investment experiences might affect as an inertia to invest on unexperienced sector. Finally, we investigated risk preference effect on CVC firm's venturing investments. The empirical data analyzed in the study contained a total of 85 U.S. based CVC firms and their 2,306 investments from 1996 until 2017. After conducting a GEE regression analysis and a Logit regression analysis, we found the significance and direction of our independent and moderating variables strongly supported all of our four hypotheses in a highly robust manner.
