To investigate the characteristics of the combined wind field produced by the natural wind field and the train-induced wind field on the bridge, the aerodynamic models of train and bridge are established and the overset mesh technology is applied to simulate the movement of high-speed train. Based on ten study cases with various crosswind velocities of 0~20 m/s and train speeds of 200~350 km/h, the distributions of combined wind velocities at monitoring points around the train and the pressure on the car-body surface are analyzed. Meanwhile, the difference between the train-induced wind fields calculated by static train model and moving train model is compared. The results show that under non-crosswind condition, the train-induced wind velocity increases with the train speed while decreases with the distance to the train. Under the crosswind, the combined wind velocity is mainly controlled by the crosswind, and slightly increases with the train speed. In the combined wind field, the peak pressure zone on the headstock surface moves from the nose area to the windward side with the increase of wind velocity. The moving train model ismore applicable in analyzing the train induced wind field.
Under certain circumstance, premixed turbulent flame can be treated as wrinkled thin laminar flame and its motion in a hydrodynamic flow field has been investigated by employing G-equation. Past studies on G-equation successfully described certain aspects of laminar flame propagation such as effects of stretch on flame speed. In those studies, flames were regarded as a passive interface that does not influence the flow field. The experimental evidences, however, indicate that flow field can be significantly modified by the propagation of flames through the volume expansion of burned gas. In the present study, a new method to be used with G -equation is described to include the effect of volume expansion in the flame dynamics. The effect of volume expansion on the flow field is approximated by Biot-Savart law. The newly developed model is validated by comparison with existing analytical solutions of G -equation to predict flames propagating in hydrodynamic flow field without volume expansion. To further investigate the influence of volume expansion, present method was applied to initially wrinkled or planar flame propagating in an imposed velocity field and the average flame speed was evaluated from the ratio of flame surface area and projected area of unburned stream channel. It was observed that the initial wrinkling of flame cannot sustain itself without velocity disturbance and wrinkled structure decays into planar flame as the flame propagates. The rate of decay of the structure increased with volume expansion. The asymptotic change in the average burning speed occurs only with disturbed velocity field. Because volume expansion acts directly on the velocity field, the average burning speed is affected at all time when its effect is included. With relatively small temperature ratio of 3, the average flame speed increased 10%. The combined effect of volume expansion and flame stretch is also considered and the result implied that the effect of stretch is independent of volume release.
An x-ray PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was developed to measure quantitative information on flows inside opaque conduits and on opaque-fluid flows. At first, the developed x-ray PIV technique was applied to flow in an opaque Teflon tube. To acquire x-ray images suitable for PIV velocity field measurements, refraction-based edge enhancement mechanism was employed using detectable tracer particles. The optimal distance between with the sample and detector was experimentally determined. The resulting amassed velocity field data were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical prediction. The x-ray PIV technique was also applied to blood flow in a microchannel. The flow pattern of blood was visualifed by enhancing the diffraction/interference -bas ed characteristic s of blood cells on synchrotron x-rays without any contrast agent or tracer particles. That is, the flow-pattern image of blood was achieved by optimizing the sample (blood) to detector distance and the sample thickness. Quantitative velocity field information was obtained by applying PIV algorithm to the enhanced x-ray flow images. The measured velocity field data show a typical flow structure of flow in a macro-scale channel.
Passive velocity field control (PVFC) was previously developed for fully mechanical systems, in which the motion task was specified by behaviors in terms of a velocity field and the closed-loop was passive with respect to the supply rate given by the environment input. However, the PVFC was only applied to a single manipulator. The proposed control law was derived geometrically and the geometric and robustness properties of the closed-loop system were also analyzed. In this paper, we propose a virtual passivity-based algorithm to apply decentralized control to multiple 3wheeled mobile robotic systems whose subsystems are under nonholonomic constraints and convey a common rigid object in a horizontal plain. Moreover, it is shown that multiple robot systems ensure stability and the velocities of augmented systems converge to a scaled multiple of each desired velocity field for cooperative mobile robot systems. Finally, the application of proposed virtual passivity-based decentralized algorithm via system augmentation is applied to trace a circle and the simulation results is presented in order to show effectiveness for the decentralized control algorithm proposed in this research.
A field velocity resistivity probe (FVRP) can measure compressional waves, shear waves and electrical resistivity in boreholes. The objective of this study is to perform the soil classification through a machine learning technique through elastic wave velocity and electrical resistivity measured by FVRP. Field and laboratory tests are performed, and the measured values are used as input variables to classify silt sand, sand, silty clay, and clay-sand mixture layers. The accuracy of k-nearest neighbors (KNN), naive Bayes (NB), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM), selected to perform classification and optimize the hyperparameters, is evaluated. The accuracies are calculated as 0.76, 0.91, 0.94, and 0.88 for KNN, NB, RF, and SVM algorithms, respectively. To increase the amount of data at each soil layer, the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and conditional tabular generative adversarial network (CTGAN) are applied to overcome imbalance in the dataset. The CTGAN provides improved accuracy in the KNN, NB, RF and SVM algorithms. The results demonstrate that the measured values by FVRP can classify soil layers through three kinds of data with machine learning algorithms.

As endothelial cells are subject to flow shear stress, it is important to determine the detailed velocity distribution in microvessels in the study of mechanical interactions between blood and endothelium. This paper describes a velocity field of the arteriole in the rat mesentery using an intravital microscope and high-speed digital video system obtained by a highly accurate PIV technique. Red blood cells (RBCs) velocity distributions with spatial resolutions of $0.8{\times}0.8{\mu}m$ were obtained even near the wall in the center plane of the arteriole. By making ensemble-averaged time-series of velocity distributions, velocity profiles over different cross-sections were calculated for comparison. The shear rate at the vascular wall also evaluated on the basis of the ensemble-averaged profiles. It was shown that the velocity profiles were blunt in the center region of the vessel cross-section while they were steep in the near wall region. The wall shear rates were significantly small, compared with those estimated from the Poiseuille profiles.
The artillery fire is characterized by great damage that can be inflicted simultaneously to an area through concentrated firing. The field artillery guns used in R.O.K. Army are generally old. Thus high values of their velocity errors cause wide dispersion of shell landings. Therefore effects of the concentrated firing is lessened. In this paper a general model which considers all error factors involved in firing in general, is established first. Then from this a basic model which includes the errors involved in concentrated firing only, such as the ballistic error, velocity error, target density function, and damage function, is extracted. Among many weapon systems now in use a specific one called gun 'A' is selected and its concentration effects are measured through computer simulation. The results show that as the velocity error of a battery increases, its target coverage capability, i. e. concentration effect, decreases. Therefore the need arises for the field artillery commander to know beforehand characteristics, i.e. velocity errors, of the guns in his unit and also to carefully examine the problem of battery arrangement with the gun characteristics in mind in order to maximize the damage effects of his artillery unit.
An improvement to the spectral representation algorithm for the simulation of wind velocity fields on large scale structures is proposed in this paper. The method proposed by Deodatis (1996) serves as the basis of the improved algorithm. Firstly, an interpolation approximation is introduced to simplify the computation of the lower triangular matrix with the Cholesky decomposition of the cross-spectral density (CSD) matrix, since each element of the triangular matrix varies continuously with the wind spectra frequency. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique is used to further enhance the efficiency of computation. Secondly, as an alternative spectral representation, the vectors of the triangular matrix in the Deodatis formula are replaced using an appropriate number of eigenvectors with the spectral decomposition of the CSD matrix. Lastly, a turbulent wind velocity field through a vertical plane on a long-span bridge (span-wise) is simulated to illustrate the proposed schemes. It is noted that the proposed schemes require less computer memory and are more efficiently simulated than that obtained using the existing traditional method. Furthermore, the reliability of the interpolation approximation in the simulation of wind velocity field is confirmed.
Three-dimensional (3D) velocity field information of a laminar flow in a curved micro tube of circular cross-section has been measured using a digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV). The temporal evolution of instantaneous velocity field of a water flow in a curved micro tube of $100\;{\mu}\;m$ and $300\;{\mu}\;m$ in inner diameter was obtained. The 3D mean velocity field distribution was obtained quantitatively by statistical-averaging of instantaneous velocity fields. At low Dean number (De), a secondary flow was not generated in the curved tube. With increasing Dean number, the secondary flow constituted of two large-scale counter-rotating vortices was formed due to enhanced centrifugal force. To reveal the flow characteristics of high Dean numbers, trajectories of fluid particles were evaluated experimentally from the 3D velocity fields data measured by the HPTV technique. The present experimental results, especially the 3D particle trajectories, would be helpful to design and to understand the mixing phenomena in 3D curved passages of various curved micro-tubes or micro-channels.
