  • We report on some of the preliminary results of the physiological responses resulting from vehicular speed changes. Healthy human subjects (n=5) were studied for the experiments. We measured the physiological responses of the subjects such as Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), and skin temperature for day and night vehicular speed change experiments, respectively. Before and after the tasks, we carried out a self-report for acquiring correlation with experiment results. Mean heart rate variability (HRV) and amplitude of GSR and skin temperature were calculated for 3 minutes duration in each state. The analysis of the physiological measures of ANS activity revealed that vehicle speed change-based affective state evoked arousal response pattern featured by HR acceleration, decrease of skin temperature, and increase of GSR amplitude. The obtained results show that despite some differences observed between each state, overall physiological responses show that the activity of the sympathetic nervous system increases as a result of the increase of speed.

  • The one of the most important factors is the platoon design on developing AH3(Advanced Highway System), as it is related to traffic efficiency and drivers' safety. This study was evaluated that how much speed is comfortable for drivers and how long distance is appropriate for vehicular gap of platoon by measuring drivers' physiology signal and sensibility. A fixed-based AHS simulator was developed by using a real vehicle cockpit and the restructured part of Korean highway for human factors evaluation. The EEG(electroencephalogram), ECG (electrocardiogram) and GSR(Galvanic Skin Response) were measured for obtaining drivers' physiology signal according to the change of speed and gap. The brain wave(${\alpha},\;{\beta},\;{\delta},\;{\theta}$) by EEG, the response of the autonomic nervous system. the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, by ECG, and relax-arousal situation by GSR were analyzed. The SD(Semantic Differential) method was also applied to evaluate drivers' sensibility by 5-grade evaluation scale with 96 adjectives. SSQ(Simulator Sickness Questionnaire) was used to measure the simulator sickness of pre and post driving, two times. As the results, drivers were comfortable with 120km/h speed of platoon and lam to 15m vehicular distance. The results of this study may differ from the adaption of the reality because of many parameters. However, the purpose of this study is show to significant results of the drivers' safety and the acceptability of human factors evaluation.

  • Future network architectures such as Named Data Networking (NDN) were born to change the way data can be transmitted from current host-centric network technologies to information-centric network technologies. Recently, many studies are being conducted to graft Vehicular NDN to the communication network technology of smart vehicles including connected vehicles. Explosion of data traffic due to Interest/Data packet broadcasting in Vehicular NDN environment is a very important problem to be solved in order to realize VNDN-based data communication. In this paper, the generation of data packet copies according to the increase in network size, vehicle speed, and frequency of interest packets in VNDN network is simulated and evaluated using ndnSIM, in order to show how severe the data broadcast storm phenomenon. The CDP(Copies of Data Packets) increased proportionally in the increase of network size or Interest frequency.

  • In ubiquitous environments, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) protocol is a typical service used to improve the quality of life for humans. The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) protocol, a part of ITS, needs further study with regards to its support for high reliability, high speed mobility, data transmission efficiency, and so on. The IEEE 802.11 standard provides a high data rate channel, but it was designed for peer-to-peer network protocols. IEEE 802.11p also provides a high data rate channel, however, it only facilitates communication between roadside and on-board equipment. A VANET has characteristics that enable its topology to change rapidly; it can also be expanded to a multi-hop range network during communication. Therefore, the VANET protocol needs a way to infer the current topology information relating to VANET equipped vehicles. In this paper, we present the Multi-Beacon MAC Protocol, and propose a method to resolve the problem of beacon collisions in VANET through the use of this Multi-Beacon MAC protocol. Evaluation of the performance of Multi-Beacon MAC protocol by means of both mathematical analyses and simulation experiments indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce beacon collisions and improve the throughput and the delay between vehicles in VANET systems.

  • Rapid change in network topology in high-speed VANET(: Vehicular Ad Hoc Network) is an important task for routing protocol design. Selecting the next hop relay node that affects the performance of the routing protocol is a difficult process. The disadvantages of AODV(: Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) related to VANET are end-to-end delay and packet loss. This paper proposes the AAODV (Advanced AODV) technique to reduce the number of RREQ (: Route Request) and RREP (: Route Reply) messages by modifying the AODV routing protocol and adding direction parameters and 2-step filtering. It can be seen that the proposed AAODV reduces packet loss and minimizes the effect of direction parameters, thereby increasing packet delivery rate and reducing end-to-end delay.

  • A road energy harvester was designed and fabricated to convert mechanical energy from the vehicle load to electrical energy. The road energy harvester is composed of 24 piezoelectric cantilevers and a vehicle load transfer mechanism. Applying a vehicle load transfer mechanism rather than directly installing energy harvesters under roads decreases the area of road construction and allows more energy harvesters to be installed on the side of the road. The power generation amount with respect to the vehicular velocity change was assessed by installing the vehicle load transfer mechanism and the energy harvester in the form of speed bumps and underground. The energy harvester installed in a speed bump form generated power of 7.61 mW at the vehicular velocity of 20 km/h. Also, power generation of the energy harvester installed in the underground form was 63.9 mW at the vehicular velocity of 28 km/h. Although the number of piezoelectric cantilevers was reduced by 1/3 to 24 in comparison to the previous research results with 72 piezoelectric cantilevers, similar power generation characteristic value was obtained within the vehicular velocity of 20 km/h by altering the vehicle load transfer mechanism and cantilever vibration method.

  • The design of sleeper in high-speed railway turnouts is complicated and time-consuming because the length and loading position of sleepers change continuously along the turnout line. It is, therefore, necessary to develop an automated design program which can design automatically the PSC sleepers in turnout region. In this study, a computer program for automatic design of turnout sleepers was developed based on graphic user-interface(GUI) environment. The structural analysis is performed considering the varying loading position of vehicular wheels. The sleepers are treated as located on elastic supports. The user can choose the desirable shape of sleepers before starting the detail design. The present study allows more realistic and automatic design of PSC sleepers in high-speed railway turnouts.

  • This paper deals with the transmission interval of vehicle data in smart highway where WAVE (Wireless Access for Vehicular Environments) systems have been installed for advanced road infrastructure. The vehicle data could be collected at every second, which is containing location information of the vehicle as well the vehicle speed, RPM, fuel consuming and safety data. The safety data such as DTC code, can be collected through OBD-II. These vehicle data can be used for valuable contents for processing and providing traffic information. In this paper, we propose a model to decide the collection interval of vehicle information in real time environment. This model can change the transmission interval along with special and time-variant traffic condition based on the 32 scenarios using microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM. We have reviewed the transmission interval, communication transmission quantity and communication interval, tried to confirm about communication possibility and BPS, etc for each scenario. As results, in 2-lane from 1km highway segment, most appropriate transmission interval is 2 times over spatial basic segment considering to communication specification. In the future, if a variety of wireless technologies on the road is introduced, this paper considering not only traffic condition but also wireless network specification will be utilized the high value.

  • In determining vertical grades in highway alignment design, engineers usually consider heavy vehicle performances on the upgrade. Heavy vehicles usually experience speed reduction on the upgrade and with recent years weight/horsepower improvements for heavy vehicles the speed reduction shows some change. However, in spite of the weight to horsepower improvements for the design vehicles from 300lb/HP to 200lb/HP in the AASHTO, there was no change in the maximum vertical grades. Therefore, a review of the maximum vertical grade reflecting existing heavy vehicle performances is required. In particular, in South Korea where highways pass through lots of mountaineous terrain, the maximum vertical grades must be reviewed throughly. In this study the amount of heavy vehicle performances during past decades were investigated and their expected impacts on highway vertical alignment designs were subsequently analyzed. A worldwide terrain analysis and international design standards were compared to set South Korean vertical grade standards. Traffic flow simulation Vissim was utilized to simulate vehicular flows on the upgrade and new truck performance curves on the grades were developed. Based on the new curve, it was decided that $1{\sim}2%$ increase of the maximum vertical grades could be allowed.
