  • This paper presents optimal design of controllable magnetorheological suspension unit for a tracked vehicle. As a first step, a double-rod type MR suspension unit is designed on the basis of the Bingham model of commercially available MR fluid, and its damping characteristics are evaluated with respect to the intensity of the magnetic field. Subsequently, the governing equation of motion of the MR suspension system featuring the MR valve is established. Then, the optimization problem to find optimal geometric dimensions of the MR supension unit is formulated by considering an objective function which is related to damping torque and control energy. The first order optimization method intergrated with a commercial finite element method(FEM) software is adopted to obtain optimal solution of the system. The performance characteristics of the optimized MR susepnsion unit is then evaluated and compared with initial one.

  • Generally, a single phase H-bridge converter feeding a single primary track is employed in conventional inductive power transfer systems. However, these systems may not be suitable for some high power applications due to the constraints of the semiconductor switches and the cost. To resolve this problem, a novel dual coupled primary tracks IPT system consisting of two high frequency resonant inverters feeding the tracks is presented in this paper. The primary tracks are wound around an E-shape ferrite core in parallel which enhances the magnetic flux around the tracks. The mutual inductance of the coupled tracks is utilized to achieve adjustable power sharing between the inverters by configuring the additional resonant capacitors. The total transfer power can be continuously regulated by altering the pulse width of the inverters' output voltage with the phase shift control approach. In addition, the system's efficiency and the control strategy are provided to analyze the characteristic of the proposed IPT system. An experimental setup with total power of 1.4kW is employed to verify the proposed system under power ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 with a transfer efficiency up to 88.7%. The results verify the performance of the proposed system.

  • This paper presents a dynamic modeling of a military vehicle suspension featuring disc spring and MR valve. Firstly, the dynamic model of the disc spring is established with respect to the load and pressure. The nonlinear behavior of the spring is incorporated with the model. Secondly, the dynamic model of the MR valve is derived by considering the pressure drop due to the viscosity and yield stress of MR fluid. The governing characteristics of the proposed suspension system are then investigated by presenting the field-dependent pressure drop of the MR valve and spring force of the gas spring.

  • The drivers of commercial vehicle easily feel tired because of a long time driving and bad road condition. Therefore it is very important to make the driver seat comfortable. This paper introduces the suspension system of driver's seat using magnetic force. The combination of linear spring and magnetic force can make nonlinear spring which has optimal stiffness for minimal vibration transmissibility. The vibrations of driver's seat floor are measured in various road condition. And the numerical simulations and experiments are performed to define the optimal parameter of magnetic suspension system.

  • A method for performing dynamic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems which have three dimensional closed-loop kinematic structure is presented. A recursive form of equations of motion for a MacPherson suspension system is derived as basis for sensitivity analysis. By directly differentiating the equations of motion with respect to design variables, sensitivity equations are obtained. The direct generalize for the application of multibody dynamic sensitivity analysis. Based on the proposed sensitivity analysis, optimal design of a MacPherson suspension system is carried out taking unsprung mass, spring and damping coefficients as design variables.

  • A linear quarter model of a vehicle suspension system is built and simulated. Especially the so-called sensitivity analysis is conducted in order to show its applicability to design problems, and sensitivity function is determined in the frequency domain. The change of frequency response function is predicted, which depends on the design parameter variation and the property is verified by computer simulation. Typical performance measures, namely, sprung mass acceleration, suspension deflection, and tire deflection are examined. The vehicle model is analyzed for ist performance sensitivity as a function of the system's feedback gains. The variable feedback gains are selected as the spring and damping coefficients. Frequency response, RMS response, and performance index of the performance evaluation variables are considered and three-dimensional and contour plots of response surfaces are formed to examine output sensitivity to suspension feedback. Performance trade-offs over the entire frequency spectrum are identified from the FRF, and that between ride quality and handling characteristics are examined from the RMS responses.

  • A functional suspension model is proposed as a kinematic describing function of the suspension that represents the relative wheel displacement in polynomial form in terms of the vertical displacement of the wheel center and steering rack displacement. The relative velocity and acceleration of the wheel is represented in terms of first and second derivatives of the kinematic describing function. The system equations of motion for the full vehicle dynamic model are systematically derived by using velocity transformation method of multi-body dynamics. The comparison of field test results and simulation results of the ADAMS/Car demonstrates the validity of the proposed functional suspension modeling method. This model is suitable for real-time vehicle dynamics analysis.

  • The shimmy phenomenon, or the radial vibration of steering wheel, happens frequently at a high speed, complicated with suspension system, steering system, vehicle body, engine, transmission and tire. In this study, the suspension system and steering system are modeled by the reference of vehicle body design coordinates(T.L.H), the coordinate system usually used by passenger car maker. In addition, the theoretical results from numerical method have been investigated and compared with the experimental ones by the correlating analysis between the tire and sub-system. The steering and suspension system modeled for the numerical analysis are both independent type. This study developed an analysis program which could forecast the shimmy level in advance by the variation of properties in each system and the change in design of new model.

  • A graphic vehicle modeling pre-processing program and a visualization post-processing program have been developed for AutoDyn7, which is a special program for vehicle dynamics. The Rapid-App for GUI(Graphic User Interface) builder and the Open Inventor for 3D graphic library have been employed to develop these programs in Silicon Graphics workstation. A Graphic User Interface program integrates vehicle modeling pre-processor, AutoDyn7 analysis processor, and visualization post-processor. In vehicle modeling pre-processor, vehicle hard point data for a suspension model are automatically converted into multibody vehicle system data. An interactive graphics capabilities provides suspension modeling aides to verify user input data interactively. In visualization post-processor, vehicle virtual test simulation results are animated with virtual testing environments.
