The contact characteristics of the current collection system are investigated by analyzing data collected during a test run of the Korean high speed rail vehicle. For the analysis, the signals from accelerometers and load cells attached to the various parts of the pantograph are analyzed in both the time and frequency domains. In the frequency domain, the pantograph response consists of low frequency components related to the rigid-body motion of the panhead assembly and high frequency components due to the structural vibration modes of the pantograph. The analysis shows that the inclusion of the high frequency structural vibration modes of the pantograph in the contact force calculation has a negligible effect on the predicted mean value of the contact force but significantly affects the magnitude of its fluctuations. This finding implies that numerical simulations using lumped element models of the pantograph may accurately predict the mean contact force but is limited in its capacity for predicting the fluctuation about the mean. Since the ratio of the fluctuation to the mean in the contact force increases with increased train speed, the limitation of the predictions based on numerical simulation results becomes more pronounced at higher train speed.
A trial run of locally-developed tilting train has been in process on Chungbuk line since the test vehicle was first produced. For the system stabilization, interface verification among the systems including track, structure, catenary and signaling system, not to mention the rolling stock, is very crucial. In the area of wayside structure, the stability of track structure and train run shall be evaluated through the review of impact by increased speed by developed train on track structure. The study thus was intended to evaluate the impact on track while a tilting train is running the conventional line(ballast track), which is vulnerable to accelerated train speed. The evaluation of tilting train test running the part of Honam line was conducted to identify the impact on existing track performance by tilting train. To identify the performance of each part of track components while tilting train and high speed train were running the existing line, wheel load, rail bending stress, vertical displacement of rail and sleeper were compared so as to evaluate the expected impact by tilting train for improving the train speed.

Most of mechanical structures are composed of many substructures connected to one another by various types of mechanical joints. In automotive engineering, it is important to study these connected structures under various dynamic forces for the evaluations of fatigue life and stress concentration exactly. In this study, the dynamic response of vehicle structure to external forces is classified an inverse problem involving strains from the experiment and the analysis. The practical dynamic forces are determined by the combination of the analytical and experimental method with analyzed strain by quasi-static finite element analysis under unit force and with measured strain by a strain gage under driving load, respectively. In a stressed body, inter-molecular chemical bonds are failed beyond the certain magnitude. The failure of molecular structure in material is considered as a time process of which rate is determined by mechanical stress. That is, the failure of inter-molecular chemical bonds is the fatigue lift of material. This kinetic concept is expressed as lethargy coefficient. And S-N curve is obtained with the lethargy coefficient from quasi-static tensile test. Equivalent practical dynamic force is obtained from the identification of practical dynamic force for one loading point. Using the practical dynamic force and S-N curve, fatigue life of a window pillar is analyzed with FEM under the identified force by the procedure of above mentioned.

New car assessment program (NCAP) originated from USNCAP in 1979 has been implemented in several countries or markets, for instance USA, Europe, Korea, Japan, China and Australia. NCAP has contributed greatly to reduce accidental tolls. But recently, NCAP performance has no distinction between cars because manufacturer have been continuously developed to improve NCAP performance. Therefore, NHTSA announced new USNCAP protocol becoming effective from MY2011. NHTSA had carried out many NCAP tests based on the new test protocol and announced these test results. In this paper, USNCAP test results were reviewed by statistical method. This review was focused on passenger cars and frontal crash test results in order to investigate effect of changes in new NCAP protocol. There are two key changes, one is sited female dummy in passenger position, the other is enlarged to 4 scoring body regions in each dummy. Results of this review were summarized as followings. Performance in Passenger (12.5%) is lower than Driver's (50%) for number of 5 star vehicle. Neck injury criterion is dominant to NCAP star rating for both dummies in the mean sense. For standard deviation, chest deflection is showed largest value in driver dummy but neck injury criterion is showed for passenger's. DKAB and PKAB were equipped 28.1% and 6.2%, respectively. Consequently, the countermeasure for new USNCAP frontal crash test is essential to control well dummy kinematics with some safety features including KAB to reduce neck injuries.

In this study, it is describe to an optimization analysis process for the weight reduction of the voltage converter in the electric vehicle charging systems. The optimization design is a technique that finds the optimal material distribution under a given material quantity constraint by combining the design sensitivity with the material properties and the mathematical optimization. Among the topology optimization, a lightweight design is performed by a solid isotropic material with penalization with simple formula and well-convergence. The lightweight design consists of three steps. As a first step, a finite element model for the basic design of the on-board voltage converter was constructed and static analysis was performed on the load. In the second step, the optimum shape is obtained for the lightweight by performing the topology optimization using the solid isotropic material with penalization applying the stiffness coefficient of the isotropic material to the static analysis result. As a final step, impact analysis was performed by applying a half-sinusoidal pulse shape impact load which satisfies the impact test standard of the vehicle-mounted part with respect to the optimum shape. In the topology optimization, the design domain was defined as the mounting bracket area, and the design technology was finally achieved by optimizing the mounting bracket to achieve a weight reduction of 20% over the basic design.

Manufacturers have been applying several technologies that can improve the fuel economy of their cars. The regulated voltage control(RVC) system, is one of those technologies being used in passenger cars. In RVC, the voltage of an alternator is controlled depending on the electrical load demand or battery SOC, although each manufacturer differs from another in terms of detail. RVC can reduce the load of an alternator by consuming the stored energy of a battery and simultaneously generate energy. In this paper, a diesel passenger car equipped with an RVC system was tested under FTP-75 and HWFET modes to evaluate fuel economy as their initial battery SOC(100, 90, 80 and 60 %). The test results showed that the initial SOC affects fuel economy only under the FTP-75 mode. FTP-75 fuel economy of the 60% SOC was 13.2 % lower than the 100 % SOC. Also, the simultaneous consumption of the two energy sources did not appear in 60 % SOC.

The drive shaft of passenger vehicle has an important role in transmitting the torque between the power train system and the wheels. Torsional fatigue failures occur generally in the connection parts of the spline edge of the drive shaft, when there is significant fatigue damage under repeated twisting loads. A heat treatment, an induction hardening process, has been adopted to increase the torsional strength as well as the fatigue life of the drive shaft. However, it is still unclear how the extension of the induction hardening process in a used material relates to its shear-strain fatigue life range. In this study, a shear-strain controlled torsional-fatigue test with a specially designed specimen was conducted by an electro-dynamic torsional fatigue test machine. A finite element analysis of the drive shaft was carried out using the results obtained by the fatigue experiment. The estimated fatigue life was verified through a twisting load test of the real drive shaft in a test rig.

Small bridges carry out only general inspections based on visual inspection. The Bridges with more than 30 years of public use need to be decided on whether or not they will be reconstruction according to aging. However, there are some situations that need to be determined only by appearance condition, which is insufficient in terms of safety maintenance. In this paper, the condition evaluation and the load carrying capacity evaluation were carried out for aged small bridges. A comparison of the evaluation results was conducted to examine the appropriateness of the maintenance related to the decision making of the reconstruction. As a result of reviewing, two of the bridges showed that there are no abnormality in the safety of the state evaluation, but the load capacity were insufficient. Thus evaluation the safety and performing the reconstruction decision of aged small bridges by visual inspection alone with may cause problems. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out additional research on the ambient measurement and load carrying capacity evaluation for the maintenance of the bridges, and to supplement it through application of the bridge management system.

In this study, the resilient modulus test and Light Weight Deflectormeter (LWD) test were conducted to simulate the moving vehicle load for the evaluation of the internal failure of epoxy asphalt pavement. The Measured displacement in the resilient modulus test of epoxy asphalt concrete showed very little residual deformation under repeated loads unlike the conventional asphalt. Therefore, the test results were evaluated as a normal state due to its similarity with elastic deformation. The deflection results from the resilient modulus tests were converted to the surface deflection modulus and the normal range of surface deflection modulus was estimated applying LWD measurement of 1 SIGMA level. Internal failure of pavements were estimated using the suspicious failure range at $60^{\circ}C$ and hysteresis. Internal moisture penetration and a decrease in bonding were observed in partial areas at $140{\mu}m$ of surface deflection. However, the areas showed inflection points in the hysteresis. Field investigation by suggested criterion indicated a high degree of accuracy.
Underground flexible pipes for electric cables are subject to external loads and surrounding soil pressure. Particularly, strain of flexible pipes is of great concern in terms of safety and maintenance for electric cables. In this paper, stress and strain of flexible pipes with various installation depth are compared using traditional formula, FEM analysis, model soil box test and field test. from the findings of various analyses, considering the strain criteria-maximum 3.5%, it is suggested that flexible pipes can be buried at the depth of 80cm without additional soil improvement.
