Characteristics of vehicle mufflers and improvement measures of vehicle exhaust noise (자동차 소음기 특성 및 배기소음 개선 방안)

  • Vehicles are exhausting various environmental pollutions such as exhaust gas, noise, and so on. This study investigates only noise problems by vehicles, especially the vehicle exhaust noise. It is known that the exhaust noise among those is over 20% of vehicle noise when the vehicle is suddenly accelerated or normally accelerated. In this study, we mainly investigate the exhaust noise of vehicle so that we intend to show the measures to decrease the illegal tuning mufflers and reduce the exhaust noise problems. In the conclusion, we suggest the new appropriate standard to control the tuning mufflers and reduce the exhaust noise induced by vehicles.

  • Studies that the vehicle exhaust system applied by the TEG(thermal electric generator) are actively in progress in order to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Vehicle exhaust system is on a poor vibration condition, it is susceptible to TEG. This paper is about the development of vibration durability test of TEG mounted on a vehicle exhaust system. Vehicle driving tests are performed to measure the vibration condition of the vehicle exhaust system. The vibration durability test mode of TEG is evaluated using equivalent vibration energy method. The vibration durability tests of TEG are performed using the multi-axial vibration simulation table.

  • A supercavitating vehicle has a speed of more than 300 km/h in water. A numerical analysis of the flow around a supercavitating vehicle must deal with a multiphase flow consisting of the water, vapor and exhaust gas because the vehicle is powered by roket propulsion. The effect of the exhaust gas on the vehicle is an important part in the study of the performance of the supercavitating vehicle. In the present study, the effect of the exhaust gas on the drag of vehicle was investigated by conducting numerical analysis. When there is no exhaust gas, drag of vehicle is affected by re-entrant. In the case with rocket propulsion, the exhaust gas reduces the influence of re-entrant. The exhaust gas also creates Mach disk and it changes drag profile.

  • Despite the increasingly stringent automotive emissions regulations, the impact of vehicle emissions on air pollution remains large. In addition, since the issue of emission of more exhaust gas than the exhaust gas measured in the test room when the vehicle passing the exhaust gas regulation standard is run on the actual road, many countries studied and introduced gas regulations about Real Driving Emission using Portable Emission Measurement System. At present, Korea regulations restrict the number of NOx and PN in diesel vehicles. In the case of gasoline vehicles, there is no regulation on emission gas, but there is a problem of continuing automobile exhaust gas problems and a large amount of gasoline GDI vehicle's PN emission. So research and interest are increasing due to this problem. In this study, characteristics of exhaust gas depending on changes of ambient temperature were analyzed among various factors affecting exhaust gas measurement of gasoline vehicles. As a result, at the low temperature test, the lower the ambient temperature, the more the exhaust gas was emitted. At ordinary temperature test, no specific tendency was observed due to changes of ambient temperature.

  • In recent, there are tremendous requirements to improve the fuel economy of vehicle. For satisfaction of requirements, Hybrid Electric Vehicle or other technologies are suggested and implemented. However, it should be noted that almost 35% energy loss is occurred in the shape of exhaust gas as ever. For increase the efficiency of vehicle, it is certain that the exhaust gas energy should be recover, and generate energy. In previous studies, the technologies such as turbo-compound, thermoelectric and rankine cycle are suggested to recover the exhaust heat energy in vehicle. But, they focus on the conventional vehicle or parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle has advantage that the engine and drive shaft are de-coupled. It means that the engine can be operated in high efficiency area regardless with vehicle states. Therefore, if rankine cycle is applied to series hybrid electric vehicle, operating condition of that becomes almost steady. So, in this study, theoretical analysis on the efficiency of rankine cycle applied to series hybrid electric city bus is carried and the energy recovered from exhaust gas during vehicle drive cycle is calculated.

  • This study focus on the effect of engine specification, driving conditions and the vehicle type on the idle emission characteristics. In order to obtain the characteristics of exhaust emissions, 1,260 vehicles of spark ignition engine are sampled and investigated. The exhaust emissions are measured with a CO/HC emission gas analyzer. The Sl engine vehicles are investigated by the effect of various exhaust emission parameters such as vehicle milage, engine specification, valve trains and fuels. The results show that the amount of CO and HC emission is not directly related to the driving mileage of the vehicle. However, the engine specifications and fuels such as the type of valve train and piston displacement have influence on the exhaust emissions. In addition, the LPG vehicle emits more CO and HC than gasoline vehicle. Based on the test results of SI vehicles, the influence of excess air and displacement volume are discussed.

  • The proportion of diesel vehicle is very high in this country . PM and NOx emitted from diesel-posered vehicle is severely ;affecting to be air quality . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) including black smoke are hazardous air pollutants to human health and environment. In order to reduce the exhaust emissions from diesel engines, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of exhaust emissions from diesel engines in various driving conditions. Recently, there are occasion to increase the fuel consumption rate to engine power up. So, in this study we have tested a diesel engine detached from in use -diesel vehicle and analyzed exhaust emission by driving condition and fuel dispersion rate. From this results, we will prepare the comprehensive management plan for exhaust emissions from diesel vehicles and contribute to the improvement of air pollution in urban area.

  • In this study, active muffler was designed and was manufactured for exhaust noise reduction of commercial vehicle, then experiment of real vehicle was conducted. In a manufactured active muffler, because the flow of exhaust noise in tail pope outlet are become a plane wave, the global reduction if radiation noise from outlet and the placement of error microphone to avoid the exhaust gas of high temperature could be implemented. In control algorithm, reduction of noise of engine driving frequency and harmonic frequency can be archieved using proposed reference signal including a fixed speed state(2,000rpm, 3,000rpm, 4,000rpm) and a run-up speed state(2,000rpm$\rightarrow$4,000rpm) is accomplished with the active muffler installed in vehicle.

  • As the interest on the air pollution is gradually rising up at home and abroad, automotive industries have been working on the exhaust emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative aftertreatment systems, and using clean fuels. Methanol, ethanol, LNG, LPG, H2, reformulated gasoline are generally recognized as the clean fuel. Since the low price policy of government on LPG has expanded its vehicle market recently, there is concern of the exhaust emission of LPG vehicle. In this paper, we studied the value of LPG fuel as a clean fuel by comparing the results of the exhaust emission from LPG and Gasoline fueled vehicles, and discussed its limitation of LPG vehicle with mixer type as a fuel supply system. FTIR was used to understand the difference of exhaust emission components of LPG and Gasoline fueled vehicles.
