  • In the agricultural field, a machine vision system has been widely used to automate most inspection processes especially in quality grading. Though machine vision system was very effective in quantifying geometrical quality factors, it had a deficiency in quantifying color information. This study was conducted to evaluate color of beef using machine vision system. Though measuring color of a beef using machine vision system had an advantage of covering whole lean tissue area at a time compared to a colorimeter, it revealed the problem of sensitivity depending on the system components such as types of camera, lighting conditions, and so on. The effect of color balancing control of a camera was investigated and multi-layer BP neural network based color calibration process was developed. Color calibration network model was trained using reference color patches and showed the high correlation with L*a*b* coordinates of a colorimeter. The proposed calibration process showed the successful adaptability to various measurement environments such as different types of cameras and light sources. Compared results with the proposed calibration process and MLR based calibration were also presented. Color calibration network was also successfully applied to measure the color of the beef. However, it was suggested that reflectance properties of reference materials for calibration and test materials should be considered to achieve more accurate color measurement.

  • We present a computerized framework for producing color pastel painting from the visual information extracted from a photograph. To express color pastel painting, we propose a multi-layered framework where each layer possesses pastel stroke patterns of different colors. The stroke patterns in the separate layers are merged by a rendering equation based on a participating media rendering scheme. To produce the stroke patterns in each layer, we review the physical properties of pastels and the mechanism of a convolution framework, which is the most widely used scheme to simulate stick-shaped media such as pencils. We devise the following computational models to extend the convolution framework to produce pastel strokes: a bold noise model, which mimics heavy and clustered deposition of pigment, and a thick convolution filter model, which produces various pastel stroke patterns. We also design a stochastic color coordination scheme to mimic pastel artists' color expression and to separate strokes in different layers. To demonstrate the soundness of approach, we conduct several experiments using the models and compare the results with existing works or real pastel paintings. We present the results for several pastel paintings to demonstrate the excellent performance of our framework.

  • Most multimedia signals contain image data, so the problem of efficient processing and transmitting the image data is an important task of the information society. This paper proposes a compression algorithm that reduces the color bits according to importance using YUV color space among the various methods of compressing image data. 4: 2: 2 subsampling is the standard in the field of video. Using the color information and the characteristics of the human retina, YUV color data was reduced by 4: 2: 2 subsampling. The YUV images and RGB images can be interconverted using the transformation matrix. The image data was converted into color space by YUV, and the relatively low U and V bits were subjected to a downscaling operation. The data was then compressed through 4: 2: 2 subsampling. The performance of the proposed algorithm was compared and analyzed by a comparison with existing methods. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to compress the image without reducing the information of the low importance color element and without significant deterioration in the quality compared to the original.

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of dietary pigment sources on shell color of juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Three replicate groups of the abalone, average weight 173 mg, were fed the diets containing various pigment sources such as Porphyra powder, Spirulina, yeast astaxanthin and paprika extract for 16 weeks. Survival and weight gain were not affected by dietary pigment sources (P>0.05). Shell color of abalone fed diets containing Porphyra powder and Spirulina was approached to yellow-red and orange which are similar to shell color of wild abalone. However, shell color of abalone fed the diets containing yeast astaxanthin and paprika extract were similar to that of control diet showing bright green. Porphyra powder and Spirulina contain not only fat-soluble pigment such as chlorophyll and carotenoids but also water-soluble pigment such as phycoerythrin and phycocyanin. These results would be useful information to change shell color of abalone in aquaculture.

  • As more and more digital images are made by various applications, image retrieval becomes a primary concern in technology of multimedia. This paper presents color based descriptor that uses information of color distribution in color images which is the most basic element for image search and performance of proposed visual feature is evaluated through the simulation. In designing the image search descriptor used color histogram, HSV, Daubechies 9/7 and 2 level wavelet decomposition provide better results than other parameters in terms of computational time and performances. Also histogram quadratic matrix outperforms the sum of absolute difference in similarity measurements, but spends more than 60 computational times.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel color image segmentation algorithm based on clustering in 3-dimensional color space employing the mathematical morphology. More specifically, since we take into account the topological properties such as the shape, connectivity and distribution of clusters in the clustering process, the number of clusters in the color cube, as well as their centers, can be easily obtained, without a priori knowledge on the input images. Intensive computer simulation has been performed and the results are discussed in this paper. The resutls of the simulation on the images in various color coordinates show that the segmentation is independent of the choice of color coordinates and the shape of clustes. Segmentation results of the vector quantizer are also presented for the comparison purpose.

  • Human ability to perceive colors is a very subjective matter. The task of measuring and analyzing appropriate colors from colored images, which matches human sensitivity for perceiving colors, has been a challenge to the research community. In this paper we propose a novel approach, which involves the use of fuzzy logic and reasoning to analyze the RGB color intensities extracted from sensory inputs to understand human sensitivity for various colors. Based on this approach, an intelligent system has been built to predict the subject's personality. The results of experiments conducted with this system are discussed in the paper.

  • The worldwide spread of the Internet and the digital information revolution have resulted in a rapid increase in the use and transmission of multimedia information due to the rapid development of communication technologies. It is important to protect images in order to prevent problems such as piracy and illegal distribution. To solve this problem, I propose a new digital color image encryption algorithm in this paper. I design a new pseudo-random number generator based on 1D five-neighborhood maximum length cellular automata (FN-MLCA) to change the pixel values of the plain image into unpredictable values. And then I use a 3D chaotic cat map to effectively shuffle the positions of the image pixel. In this paper, I propose a method to construct a new MLCA by modeling 1D FN-MLCA. This result is an extension of 1D 3-neighborhood CA and shows that more 1D MLCAs can be synthesized. The safety of the proposed algorithm is verified through various statistical analyses.

  • This paper proposed the color reproduction modeling of OLED using standard RGB display. The kinds of non-standard RGB displays are various. And color reproduction of non-standard RGB displays is different by chromaticities of primaries and reference white etc. In this paper, we proposed algorithm that made OLED display's color reproduction to standard CRT monitor using conversion matrix. If using the algorism that is proposed in this paper, we can confirm the reproduced color characteristics to simulation beforehand and improve the performance of existing display. when developing new display, we are expected to be used very usefully.

  • Most of the photographs or images of the present age have pixels of various colors that can not be recognized by human eyes. For a specific purpose, pixel-based image processing is inevitable rather than passive investigation using the human eye in order to find areas of color similar to the target color. In this paper, we try to detect all the pixels of the same color or the same color in the image. We will also try to find pixels within the error range that are similar in color to the color we are looking for.
