  • The mutagenesis-enhancing plasmid pKM101 and its mutant pSL4 were introduced into Escherichia coli B/r strains possessing different DNA repair capacities ($phr^{-}, recA^{-}, uvrA^{-}, uvrB^{-}$) and determined the protection effect and mutagenecity for UV and MNNG. The mutability and protection effect of plasmid pKM101 and pSL4 were affected by different DNA repair capacity. The mutagenecity and resistance of two plasmids were increased against UV and MNNG, and plasmid pSL4 had a higher effect than pKM101. We suggest that the functional differences between pKM101 and pSL4 is due to the variety of mutator gene.

  • Used cutting fluid from machining processes is harmful to both environment and human health. Chemical substances that provide the lubrication function in the machining process are toxtc to the environment if the cutting fluid is released to soil and water and caused serious health problems to workers who are exposed to the cutting fluid in both liquid and mist form. Recently. cost of using cutting fluid is increasing as the number and the extensiveness of environmental protection laws and regulations increase. Therefore, the use of cutting fluid in machining processes place an enormous burden on manufacturing companies to cover the additional costs associated with their use and protection of our environment. Current trends in manufacturing are focused on minimizing or eliminating the use of metalworking fluids in machining processes. And the increased costs for the disposal of waste products (swarf, coolants and lubricants), especially in industrially developed countries, has generated interest in dry machining. A variety of new techniques are testimony that new technology has rationalized further efforts to research and implement dry machining processes. This paper presents the developed equipment, the process optimization and the applications in the field of surface grinding for the new cryogenic dry machining using a compressed cooling air. The investigated new machining process method shows many advantages compared to conventional techniques with cutting fluid.

  • This first ISO/CD 7475 is a proposed revision of ISO 7475-1984, which specifies requirements for enclosures and other safety measures used to minimize mechanical hazards produced by the rotor in the measuring station of centrifugal (rotational) balancing machines. The hazards are associated with the operation of balancing machines under a variety of rotor and balancing conditions. This standard defines different classes of protection that enclosures and other protective features have to provide and describes the limits of applicability for each class of protection. At the meeting held at AFNOR in Paris in June 1999, ISO/TC 108/SC1/WG 12 agreed to prepare a first ISO Committee Draft (CD) and circulate to the member bodies for vote and comment by 3 March 2000 since publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75% of the member bodies casting a vote. The results of the ballot on this first ISO/CD 7475 was positive so that it will be prepared as an ISO/DIS (ISO/DIS 7475) and discussed in a meeting of ISO/TC 108/SC1 at BSI, London, u.K. in March 2000. Contents of this ISO/CD 7475 with some member comments accounted is briefly described in what follows.

  • MEMS, Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems, present one of the greatest advanced packaging challenges of the next decade. Historically hybrid technology, generally thick film, provided sensors and actuators while integrated circuit technologies provided the microelectronics for interpretation and control of the sensor input and actuator output. Brought together in MEMS these technical fields create new opportunities for miniaturization and performance. Integrated circuit processing technologies combined with hybrid design systems yield innovative sensors and actuators for a variety of applications from single crystal silicon wafers. MEMS packages, far more simple in principle than today's electronic packages, provide only physical protection to the devices they house. However, they cannot interfere with the function of the devices and often must actually facilitate the performance of the device. For example, a pressure transducer may need to be open to atmospheric pressure on one side of the detector yet protected from contamination and blockage. Similarly, an optical device requires protection from contamination without optical attenuation or distortion being introduced. Despite impediments such as package standardization and complexity, MEMS markets expect to double by 2003 to more than $9 billion, largely driven by micro-fluidic applications in the medical arena. Like the semiconductor industry before it. MEMS present many diverse demands on the advanced packaging engineering community. With focused effort, particularly on standards and packaging process efficiency. MEMS may offer the greatest opportunity for technical advancement as well as profitability in advanced packaging in the first decade of the 21st century! This paper explores MEMS packaging opportunities and reviews specific technical challenges to be met.

  • In order to prevent automobile accidents internationally, advanced safety devices are actively being developed. Among them, Auto Emergency Brake (AEB) function and Forward Collision Warning (FCW), which are used to prevent or reduce frontal collision, have been studied for a long time, and are being researched by various manufacturers to develop better performance. In fact, in the case of large vehicles, it is mandatory for AEB to be installed in Korea. Accordingly, a variety of Vehicles equipped with AEB and FCW are coming out, and inspection of these mounting devices is a necessary system in the future. This study confirms how AEB and FCW are currently assessed in regulation and the New Car Assesment Program (NCAP), This is a basic study of the matters to be considered in preparing AEB and FCW inspection standard by checking the performance of vehicles equipped with forward collision protection and identifying the vehicle's sensitivity, range and speed of radar sensors, and target vehicles based on CAN communication data.

  • The white soybean cyst nematode Heterodera sojae, isolated from the roots of soybean in Korea, is widespread in most provinces of the country and has the potential to be as harmful to soybean as H. glycines. Determining the virulence phenotypes of H. sojae is essential to devising management strategies that use resistant cultivars. Consequently, virulence phenotypes of 15 H. sojae populations from Korea were determined on seven soybean lines and one susceptible check variety. Two different HS types were found to be present in Korea; the more common HS type 2.5.7, comprising 73.3% of the H. sojae populations and the less common HS type 0, constituting only 26.7% of the tested populations. Considering the high frequency of H. sojae adaptation to soybean indicator lines, the PI 88788 group may not be a possible source of resistance while PI 548402, PI 90763, PI 437654, and PI 89772 can be used as resistance sources for soybean breeding programs aimed at developing H. sojae-resistant soybean cultivars in Korea.

  • This survey provides research into developing knee braces to protect the knee against damage, reduce knee pain, and strengthen the knee. A total of 235 surveys were conducted from December 2019 to January 2020. The subjects were adults in their 20s and over who lived in the Seoul metropolitan area and had experience of using knee braces. In terms of age differences, subjects over 60 years of age purchased knee braces mostly to secure a reduction of pain (ROP), whereas subjects in their 20s and 30s purchased knee braces for physical shock protection (PSP). Subjects in their 40s and 50s purchased knee braces for improvement of muscle movement (IMM). There was no significant difference in shape, material, and locking method based on the reason for wearing the knee brace. These results show that it is conceivable and maybe preferable to produce different knee braces-with a variety of shapes, materials, and locking materials-according to the reason behind wearing a knee brace. Knee braces are worn currently without any differentiation despite the findings of this study. In particular, we argue the need for functional and differentiated development of knee braces specifically for PSP, ROP, and IMM.
