This paper critically reviews three decades of research on geographic variations. in health services utilization in the United States, thereby drawing policy and research implications for Korea. The recent renewed interest in variations research in the United States, precipitated by studies on regional variations in Medicare expenditures, stems mainly from the policy implication that a substantial amount of Medicare expenditures could be saved without compromising quality and access. From the research perspective, this policy implication was made tenable by integrating micro- and macro-level analysis of variations in health services utilization. Still, theoretical limitations inherent in the research pose great challenges to developing effective strategies at the health system level. Variations research in the United States can serve as a case study as to how health services research has responded to efficiency and quality issues in an ever expanding health system Considering the current health policy and research environment in Korea, the following implications can be drawn. Variations research will help formulate a national policy agenda for health care quality and also advance the framework of approaches to health policy issues. For such purposes, both relevant descriptive and hypothesis-testing studies are needed. Further advancement in variations research will require interdisciplinary explorations and methodological sophistication. To the extent that Korean health policies will strive to achieve complex goals, variations research will increasingly prove to be useful.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute researchers have installed and operated magnetometers at Mt. Bohyun Observatory to measure the Earth's magnetic field variations in South Korea. We, in 2007, installed a fluxgate magnetometer (RFP-523C) to measure H, D, and Z components of the geomagnetic field. In addition, in 2009, we installed a Overhauser proton sensor to measure the absolute total magnetic field F and a three-axis magneto-impedance sensor for spectrum analysis. Currently three types of magnetometer data have been accumulated. In this paper, we provide the preliminary and the first statistical analysis using the BOH magnetometer installed at Mt. Bohyun Observatory. By superposed analysis, we find that daily variations of H, D, and Z shows similar tendency, that is, about 30 minutes before the meridian (11:28) a minimum appears and the time after about 3 hours and 30 minutes (15:28) a maximum appears. Also, a quiet interval start time (19:06) is near the sunset time, and a quiet interval end time (06:40) is near the sunrise time. From the sunset to the sunrise, the value of H has a nearly constant interval, that is, the sun affects the changes in H values. Seasonal variations show similar dependences to the sun. Local time variations show that noon region has the biggest variations and midnight region has the smallest variations. We compare the correlations between geomagnetic variations and activity indices as we expect the geomagnetic variation would contain the effects of geomagnetic activity variations. As a result, the correlation coefficient between H and Dst is the highest (r = 0.947), and other AL, AE, AU index and showed a high correlation. Therefore, the effects of geomagnetic storms and geomagnetic substorms might contribute to the geomagnetic changes significantly.
The serum and erythrocyte cholinesterase activity and their seasonal variations were determined with 8 males of healthy Korean cattles during one year period from September, 1966 to august, 1977. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The serum cholinestrase activity showed a range of 0.64mg/hr/ml to 8.26mg/hr/ml with a mean value of $3.69{\pm}0.25mg/hr/ml$. There was highly significant differences in the seasonal variations. 2. The erythrocyte cholinesterase activity ranged from 29.78mg/hr/ml to 48.88mg/hr/ml with a mean value of $38.37{\pm}1.11mg/hr/ml$. Seasonal variations was not found to be significant. 3. The results showed that the serum cholinesterase activity of Korean cattle had great variations among individual values and significant seasonal variations. On the other hand, cholinesterase activity of erythrocyte showed a little variations among individual values and no significant seasonal variations.
To investigate the occurrence of modern living planktonic foraminiferal species and their seasonal variations around Jeju Island, we conducted planktonic foraminiferal sampling at KIOST's regular sampling sites during 16 months. In total seven genus and 16 modern planktonic foraminiferal species were identified with six dominant species. Dominant species were Gloigerinoides sacculifer, Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerina bulloides, Noegloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, and Globorotalia inflata. Most of the species were characterized as being typical subtropical species and showed seasonal variations and/or intermittent occurrence from season to season. The occurrence of living foraminifera revealed a strong relationship with water temperature, but not with salinity. Species succession seems to occur along with water temperature changes. Some patch distribution and water temperature dependences appear to be significant since there is a high degree of variation in the occurrence patterns of species and standing stock. More detailed quantitative study is necessary to confirm the species diversity and seasonal variations of planktonic foraminifera and related ocean environmental changes.
The purpose of this study was to develop questions for fashion design development, by applying 7 elements of the scamper to the fashion design elements, and to present a scamper checklist of fashion design elements, and item structures. In this study, the scope of research was limited to clothing design among various fashion products, and among various design development stages. Fashion design development focusing on design sketching, was limited to the research scope. The research method was based on an empirical study that derived scamper questions through FGI (Focus Group Interview), consisting of 5 fashion experts. Fashion design elements applied to development of scamper questions consisted of silhouettes, constructive lines, structural details, decorative details, patterns and textures of fabrics, and item structures, derived by applying these elements to the individual 7 elements of the scamper: substitute, combine, adjust, modify, put to other uses, eliminate, and reverse. Results of the study included 7 questions for substituting, 8 questions for combining, 6 questions for applying, 15 questions for modifying, 4 questions for putting to other uses, 4 questions for eliminating, and 7 questions for reversal. The scamper checklist for fashion design elements and item structures drew to 5 lists of silhouette variations, 7 lists of constructive line variations, 11 lists of structural detail variations, 10 lists of decorative detail variations, 11 lists of fabric variations, and 9 lists of structural modifications of items.
Excessive dynamic-tension variations on the top-tensioned risers (TTRs) deteriorate the structural integrity and cause potential safety hazards. This phenomenon has become more remarkable in the development of deep-water fields with harsher environmental loads. The conventional prediction method of tension variations in hydro-pneumatic tensioner (HPT) has the disadvantage to underestimate the magnitude of cyclic loads. The actual excessive dynamic tension variations are larger when considering the viscous frictional fluid effects. In this paper, a suppression method of tension variations in HPT is modeled by incorporating the magneto-rheological (MR) damper and linear-force actuator. The mathematical models of the combined HPT and MR damper are developed and a force-control scheme is introduced to compensate the excessive tension variations on the riser tensioner ring. Numerical simulations and analyses are conducted to evaluate the suppression of tension variations in HPT under both regular- and irregular-wave conditions for a drilling riser of a tensioned-leg platform (TLP). The results show that significant reduction of tension variations can be achieved by introducing the proposed system. This research has provided a theoretical foundation for the HPT tension control and related structural protection.
The purpose of this study was to suggest the knowledge and scientific information of the damage and improvement according to hair coloring manipulation. The study investigated variations of mechanical, nourishment(amino acid cystine) shape of cuticle characteristics according to hair coloring during 40, 50 minute. The results were as follows; Tensile strength was decreased variations of 6.62%, 13.68%, extension rate was increased variations of 10.58%, 12.28%, thickness was increased variations of 9.15%, 15.64% in 40 min. and 50 min. hair coloring. Content of amino acid cystine was lowered variations of 23.00%, 30.49% according to time of manipulation. A shape of cuticles was disfigured and brocken by reason of hair coloring manipulation.
Recently, temporal variations of the 3-micron emissions of methane and ethane have been detected in the auroral regions of Jupiter observed from Gemini North (Kim et al. 2019, in preparation). These temporal variations of 3-micron hydrocarbon emissions in the auroral regions can be caused by the following phenomena: temporal variations of temperatures, mixing ratios, auroral particle bombardments and Joule heatings, and the combinations of these. Although we are not able to quantitatively determine the cause of the temporal variations at this moment, we will present the following quantitative discussions: thermal influences on the 3-micron emissions, global mixing ratio distributions of the hydrocarbon molecules, and energy distributions of auroral particles penetrating the hydrocarbon layers. We will also present a possible correlation between the temporal variations of the 3-micron emissions and solar wind activities.
Purpose - In a global economy, marketers are required to understand service quality from an international consumer viewpoint. Despite the increased need for cross-cultural research, few studies have developed service quality research international in scope. The present research aims to shed light on variations in airline service quality among international consumers. Research design, data, and methodology - Conducting crosscultural research, this study compares airline service quality variations, investigating an international consumer group and a Korean consumer group. T-test and factor analyses are applied to examine mean scores and factor structure of the airline service dimensions. Results - The results indicate there are significant differences in mean comparisons between the groups. The international consumers indicate significantly higher service perception scores than the Koreans. Further, we find that the factor structure of airline service quality diverges between the groups. The international group considers airline service quality in four dimensions, while Koreans consider it in two. Conclusions - The study sheds new light on international service variations and suggests that the field of airline service quality may differ by nations and/or cultures.
This study describes an efficient approach to the development of DNA markers for use in distinguishing the Scrophularia species that have been used as useful medicinal crops. In order to distinguish Scrophularia species, DNA sequences of rpl-5 region in mitochondrial DNA of Scrophularia species were analysed for detecting sequence variations, and the PCR-RFLP method was applied for developing practicable DNA marker patterns. Several DNA variations were detected by the sequence comparison of rpl-5 region among Scrophularia species. Genetic relationship analysis of Scrophularia species was carried out based on these DNA variations. DNA variations of rpl-5 region were revealed that it was significantly efficient in genetic relationship analysis of Scrophularia species. In addition, Scrophularia species tested in this study were completely discriminated by four polymorphic genotypes by PCR-RFLP combined with Tsp509 I (^AATT) restriction enzyme. Our results suggested that DNA sequence variations of rpl-5 region were sufficiently useful for genetic relationship analysis of Scrophularia species. Polymorphic genotypes by PCR-RFLP using the Tsp509 I enzyme will be useful for discrimination of Scrophularia species as a practicable DNA markers.
