  • In this study, fatigue growth behavior of the transverse crack, which was the most dangerous damage among the various types of rail defects, was investigated using the notched keyhole specimen under constant amplitude loadings. Fatigue limit of smooth specimen in rail steel at R=0 was 110MPa, and the fatigue crack initiation life in the region of the low stress amplitude (ie. long life) occupied the major portion of the total fatigue life. The fatigue strength under variable amplitude loading was converted to the equivalent fatigue strength based upon. Miners rule, which was estimated approximately 9% lower than that under constant amplitude loading. Also, in the low ΔK(sub)rms region ($\leq$21MPa√m), fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) under constant amplitude loading was higher than that under variable amplitude loading, whereas the tendency was reversed in the high ΔK(sub)rms region. It is believed that this behavior is due to the transition of fracture appearance.

  • The DEEP-South photometric census of small Solar System bodies is producing massive time-series data of variable, transient or moving objects as a by-product. To fully investigate unexplored variable phenomena, we present an application of multi-aperture photometry and FastBit indexing techniques to a portion of the DEEP-South year-one data. Our new pipeline is designed to do automated point source detection, robust high-precision photometry and calibration of non-crowded fields overlapped with area previously surveyed. We also adopt an efficient data indexing algorithm for faster access to the DEEP-South database. In this paper, we show some application examples of catalog-based variability searches to find new variable stars and to recover targeted asteroids. We discovered 21 new periodic variables including two eclipsing binary systems and one white dwarf/M dwarf pair candidate. We also successfully recovered astrometry and photometry of two near-earth asteroids, 2006 DZ169 and 1996 SK, along with the updated properties of their rotational signals (e.g., period and amplitude).

  • The AMR(automatic meter reading) system has been increasingly and widely used for its efficient and intelligent management, which is a technology that automatically collects consumption data from a water meter or energy metering device. The digital meter instead of the mechanical meter should be used in the system. Up to now, various types of sensor to measure the water flow rate have been used in the digital water meter, for example, reed switch, photo IR approximate sensor, ultrasonic sensor, electromagnetic sensor, etc. In this paper, a new sensing technology, where a variable capacitor and digital circuit were used for sensing the water flow rate, was proposed. The circuit was designed and verified by Pspice simulation. And a PCB board for the circuit was fabricated. After then, a prototype of digital water meter using a variable capacitor to measure the water flow rate was fabricated. The function tests of the fabricated digital water meter were performed, and it was found that the meter worked properly. Since the new technology has much better properties in terms of cost and power consumption compared to conventional technologies, it should be one of the major digital water meter technologies in the future.

  • A family of smart tuned mass dampers (STMDs) with variable frequency and damping properties is analyzed under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Two types of STMDs are studied: one is realized by a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device and the other is realized by a pendulum with an adjustable length. Based on the feedback signal, the angle of the SAIVS device or the length of the pendulum is adjusted by using a servomotor such that the frequency of the STMD matches the dominant excitation frequency in real-time. Closed-form solutions are derived for the two types of STMDs under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Results indicate that a small damping ratio (zero damping is the best theoretically) and an appropriate mass ratio can produce significant reduction when compared to the case with no tuned mass damper. Experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical result of the smart pendulum TMD (SPTMD). Frequency tuning of the SPTMD is implemented through tracking and analyzing the signal of the excitation using a short time Fourier transformation (STFT) based control algorithm. It is found that the theoretical model can predict the structural responses well. Both the SAIVS STMD and the SPTMD can significantly attenuate the structural responses and outperform the conventional passive TMDs.

  • Blue straggler stars (BSs) are "rejuvenated" main sequence stars first recognized by Allan Sandage from his observation of the prominent northern globular cluster M3 in the year of 1953. BSs are now known to be present in diverse stellar environments including open clusters, globular clusters, dwarf galaxies, and even the field populations of the Milky Way. This makes them a very useful tool in a wide range of astrophysical applications: Particularly BSs are considered to have a crucial role in the evolution of stellar clusters because they affect on the dynamics, the binary population, and the history of the stellar evolution of the cluster they belong to. Here we report a part of the preliminary results from our ongoing research on the BSs in the two metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), Hodge 11 and NGC1466. Using the high precision multi-band images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we extract time-series photometry to search for the signal of periodic variations in the luminosity of the BSs. Our preliminary results confirm that several BSs are intrinsic "short period (0.05 < P < 0.25 days)" variable stars with either pulsating or eclipsing types. We will discuss our investigation on the properties of those variable BS candidates in the context of the formation channels of these exotic main sequence stars, and their roles in the dynamical evolution of the host star clusters.

  • A designer regards the vibration system as a linear system. However, in real world, nonlinearity of a vibration system should exist caused by various factors like manufacturing conditions or uncertain material properties. So, properties of a spring and a damper which are consisting the vibration system have statistical distribution. Therefore, a designer needs to analyze the statistical nonlinearity in a vibration system. In this paper, $1^{st}$ Taylor series expansion method and univariate dimension reduction method apply to a performance measure of nonlinear vibration system, and compare each result. And then, merits and demerits of each method are discussed. For apply more actual problem, a performance measure population is estimated based on design variable samples like properties of spring or damper.

  • It is necessary to study on thermo-hydro-mechanical effect at rock mass performing project such as radiowaste disposal in deep rock mass. In this study, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling analysis which is considered interaction and the variation of rock properties induced by temperature increase was performed for the circular shaft when appling temperature of 20$0^{\circ}C$ at the shaft wall. The shaft is diameter of 2 m and under hydrostatic stress of 5 MPa. In the cases, thermal expansion by temperature increase progress from the wall to outward and thermal expansion could induce tensile stress over the tensile strength of rock mass at the wall. When rock properties were given as a function of temperature, thermal expansion increased, tensile stress zone expanded. Lately, water flow is activated by increase of permeability and decrease of viscosity.

  • This work presents an optimality criteria method applicable io the design of plane frames with I-shape sections. All kinds of constraints are treated properly to ensure the mathematical rigour of the method as ever. Among the various properties of a section, the cross-sectional area is chosen as the design variable associated with the member. Then other properties, moment of inertia and depth, are determined from the cross-sectional area using relationships established in advance from the sectional data for AISC standard W shapes. The optimality criteria established in this work is perfect in mathematical terms provided that the relationships between properties of a section are correct. A redesign algorithm is derived relying heavily on the Newton-Raphson method to solve the system of nonlinear constraint equations. A worked example is also Presented.

  • To study hopping conducting mechanism in PAN(polyacrylonitrile) carbon fiber, the temperature and frequency dependence of electrical conductivity and magnetoresistance characteristics were investigated. Electrical conductivity in the range of $60^{\circ}K-300^{\circ}K$ show VRH(variable range hopping) properties which introduced by Mott's theory, and also such properties can be explained by the frequency dependence of electrical conductivity below $5{\times}10^6$ Hz. The negative magnetoresistance observed below 35KG magnetic field, and the properties difference between M40 and T300 with increasing magnetic field is supposed due to on effect connected with crystalline state and orientation of structure.
