  • H.264, a recently proposed international video coding standard, has adopted context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) as the entropy coding tool in the baseline profile. By combining an adaptive variable length coding technique with context modeling, we can achieve a high degree of redundancy reduction. However, CAVLC in H.264 has weakness that the correct prediction rate of the variable length coding (VLC) table is low in a complex area, such as the boundary of an object. In this paper, we propose a VLC table prediction scheme considering multiple reference blocks; the same position block of the previous frame and the neighboring blocks of the current frame. The proposed algorithm obtains the new weighting values considering correctness of the VLC table for each reference block. Using this method, we can enhance the prediction rate of the VLC table and reduce the bit-rate.

  • The Universal Variable Length Coding(UVLC) scheme in H.26L has nice features such as error resiliency and two-way decodability. However, it has lower coding efficiency than the conventional Huffman coding. To improve the coding efficiency of UVLC, we Propose to use a dynamic codeword mapping that changes association between symbols and codewords in order to utilize the statistical characteristics of symbols as much as possible but without losing any features of the UVLC. Both encoder and decoder use the same re-association table, and hence the encoder need not send additional overhead for the re-mapping relationship to the decoder. Simulation results show that without significant change of the current H.26L coding scheme, the proposed method additionally attains up to about 8% and about 5% bit reductions respectively in intra and inter frames over the current H.26L encoding method.

  • The Morse code was firstly used for a wire telegraph service on May 1884 in USA. After about 10 years Korean researchers developed the Morse code in 1884 and the Morse code was firstly introduced in Korea for the wire telegraph service in September 1885. For about 130 years later, the Hangul Jamo Morse code has been used without any serious modification up to now. The Morse code is the variable length code system which each codes have a different code length. The related reference shows that English alphabet Morse code was applied in the coding theory. However, a result of analysis showed that the Hangul Jamo Morse code was not applied in the coding theory as the english alphabet code system. This paper presents the analysis result of Hangul Jamo Morse code according to the variable length coding theory. As a result of the analysis, when Hangul Jamo are coded with application of the variable length coding theory, the transmission data rate could be increased up to 25% compare to the existing code system. This paper shows a new Hangul Jamo Morse code system based on the analysis result.

  • Variable length coding (VLC) has been used in many well known standard video coding algorithms such as MPEG and H.26x. However, VLC can not be processed parallelly because of its sequentiality. This sequentiality is a big barrier for implementing a real-time software video codec since parallel schemes can not be applied. In this paper, we propose a new fast VLD (Variable Length Decoding) method based on the probabilistic distribution of symbols in VLC tables used in MPEG as well as H.263 standard codecs. Even though MPEG suggests the table partitioning method, they do not show theoretically why the number of partitioned tables is two or three. We suggest the method for deciding the number of partitioned tables. Applying our scheme to several well-known MPEG-2 test sequences, we can reduce the computational time up to about 10% without any sacrificing video quality

  • In this paper we propose a reversible image coding methods with progressive build-up function by bit-plane of multi-lavel image. Firstly, the differencial conversion is applied to reduce the entropy of source images. Then the bit-plane sequences of converted images are coded by means of the newly designed VFRL(Variable to Fixed Run-Llength) code and the RDHC(Run-length Dynamic Huffman Coding). We aim to the simple construction to reduce the complexity. The computer simulated results show that the proposed methods are very effective to the multi-level digital images. For "GIRL" and "COUPLE" of 1EEE monochromatic standard images, the compressibility are superior to the results obtained by the well-known universal codes.own universal codes.

  • This paper has been studied a wavelet based still image transmission over the wireless channel. EZW(Embedded Zerotree Wavelet) is an efficient and scalable wavelet based image coding technique, which provides progressive transfer of signal resulted in multi-resolution representation. It reduces therefore the reduce cost of storage media. Although EZW has many advantages, it is very sensitive on error. Because coding are performed in subband by subband, and it uses arithmetic coding which is a kind of variable length coding. Therefore only 1∼2bit error may degrade quality of the entire image. So study of error localization and recovery are required. This paper investigates the use of reversible variable length codes(RVLC) and data partitioning. RVLC are known to have a superior error recovery property due to their two-way decoding capability and data partitioning is essential to applying RVLC. In this work, we show that appropriate data partitioning length for each SNR(Signal-to-Noise Power Ratio) and error localization in wireless channel.

  • Variable length codes are often used in entropy coding, but are very vulnerable in noisy environments. Reversible variable length codes, however, muse possible to decode instantaneously in both forward and backward directions, so that more usable data can be retrieved when bit errors occur via transmission. Furthermore, partial decodability is desirable to introduce in the reversible variable length code because ROI (Region Of Interest) decoding function is sometimes required in recent image information systems such as the medical imaging, the digital museum and so on. In this paper, we propose a partially decodable and reversible variable length code by modifying Golomb-Rice code.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to reduce the bitrate for transmission of MCP(motion compensated prediction) error signals. Many digital image coders have recently employed hybrid coding schemes which perform motion compensation, DCT transform, quantization, and variable length coding. The variable length coding compresses the quantized DCT coefficient data by removing their statistical redundancy. But some DCT blocks have the interblock statistical redundancy as well as the intrablock one. To utilize both of them, the DCT blocks are classified into the interleaving group and the non-interleaving group. And then each DCT blocks in the interleaving group are is encoded independently, and the DCT blocks in the interleaving group are encoded after interleaving the DCT coefficients. Through the simulations, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional method in which each DCT block is encoded independently.

  • Video compression schemes have been developed and used for many years. Currently, H.264/AVC is the most efficient video coding standard. The H.264/AVC baseline profile adopts CAVLC(Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding) method as an entropy coding method. CAVLC gives better performance in compression ratios than conventional VLC(Variable Length Coding). However, because CAVLC decoder uses a lot of VLC tables, the CAVLC decoder requires a lot of area in terms of hardware. Conversely, since it must look up the VLC tables, it gives a worse performance in terms of software. In this paper, we propose a new hierarchical grouping method for the VLC tables. We can obtain an index of codes in the reconstructed VLC tables by simple arithmetic operations. In this method, the VLC tables are accessed just once in decoding a symbol. We modeled the proposed algorithm in C language, compiled under ARM ADS1.2 and simulated it with Armulator. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces execution time by about 80% and 15% compared with the H.264/AVC reference program JM(Joint Model) 10.2 and the arithmetic operation algorithm which is recently proposed, respectively.
