  • The least-mean fourth (LMF) algorithm is well known for its fast convergence and low steady-state error especially in non-Gaussian noise environments. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the least mean square (LMS) algorithms with variable step size. It is because the variable step-size LMS algorithms have shown to outperform the conventional fixed step-size LMS in the various situations. In this paper, a variable step-size LMF algorithm is proposed, which adopts an algebraic optimal step size as a variable step size. It is expected that the proposed algorithm also outperforms the conventional fixed step-size LMF. The superiority of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by the simulations in the time invariant and time variant channels.

  • Variable step size LMS(VS-LMS) algorithms improve performance of LMS algorithm by means of varying the step size. This paper presents a new VS-LMS algorithm using normalized absolute estimation error. Normalizing the estimation error to the expected valus of the desired signal, we determined the step size using the relative size of estimation error, Because parameters and computational load are less, our algorithm is easy to implement in hardware. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed theoretically and estimated through simulations. Based on the theoretical analysis and computer simulations, the proposed algorithm is shown to be effective compared to conventional VS-LMS algorithms.

  • Many industrial processes that are operated by rotating machines and large air-moving fans are excellent examples to which the single channel ANC systems can be applied. In these environments, the active noise control techniques are most popular nowadays. In this paper, a modified LMS algorithm(EAC, Error Amplitude Compared) is proposed. The algorithm is a kind of variable step-size LMS-type algorithm. Computer simulations show that the proposed EAC algorithm achieves a better convergence time than a conventional VS(Variable Step-Size) algorithm, Also, this algorithm has been implemented by using and experimental duct system.

  • The filtered-x LMS(FX-LMS) algorithm has been applied to the active noise control(ANC) system in an acoustic duct. This algorithm is designed based on the FIR(finite impulse response) filter, but it has a slow convergence problem because of a large number of zero coefficients. In order to improve the convergence performance, the step size of the LMS algorithm was modified from fixed to variable. However, this algorithm is still not suitable for the ANC system of a short acoustic duct since the reference signal is affected by the backward acoustic wave propagated from a secondary source. Therefore, the recursive filtered-u LMS algorithm(FU-LMS) based on infinite impulse response(IIR) is developed by considering the backward acoustic propagation. This algorithm, unfortunately, generally has a stability problem. The stability problem was improved by using an error smoothing filter. In this paper, the recursive LMS algorithm with variable step size and smoothing error filter is designed. This recursive LMS algorithm, called FU-VSSLMS algorithm, uses an IIR filter. With fast convergence and good stability, this algorithm is suitable for the ANC system in a short acoustic duct such as the intake system of an automotive. This algorithm is applied to the ANC system of a short acoustic duct. The disturbance signals used as primary noise source are a sinusoidal signal embedded in white noise and the chirp signal of which the instantaneous frequency is variable. Test results demonstrate that the FU-VSSLMS algorithm has superior convergence performance to the FX-LMS algorithm and FX-LMS algorithm. It is successfully applied to the ANC system in a short duct.

  • One of the most popular algorithm in adaptive signal processing is the least mean square(LMS) algorithm. The majority of these papers examine the LMS algorithm with a constant step size. The choice of the step size reflects a tradeoff between misadjustment and the speed of adaptation. Subsequent works have discussed the issue of optimization of the step size or methods of varying the step size to improve performance. However there is as yet no detailed analysis of a variable step size algorithm that is capable of giving both the adaptation speed and the convergence. In this paper we propose a new variable step size algorithm where the step size adjustment is controlled by the gradient of error square. The proposed algorithm is performed in the Walsh-Hadamard domain in real-valued orthogonal transform because of fast convergence. The simulation results using the new algorithm for noise canceller system is described. They are compared to the results obtained by other algorithms. It is shown that the proposed algorithm produces good results compared with conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) using the variable step size normalized least mean square (VSSNLMS) in real-time automobile environment. As a basic algorithm for ANC, the LMS algorithm has been used for its simplicity. However, the LMS algorithm has problems of both convergence speed and estimation accuracy in real-time environment. In order to solve these problems, the VSSLMS algorithm for ANC is considered in nonstationary environment. By computer simulation using real-time data acquisition system(USB 6009), VSSNLMS algorithm turns out to be more effective than the LMS algorithm in both convergence speed and estimation accuracy.

  • As the convergence speed of time domain adaptive algorithm on the LMS(Least Mean Square) becomes slow when eigen value distribution width is spread, So variable step size algorithm is used widely. But it needs a lot of calculation load. In this paper we consider new algorithm, which can reduce calculations and improve convergence speed, uses instantaneous absolute value of average noise signal adapting the exponential function. For the performance of proposed algorithm is tested and simulated to system generator. As the result we show the variable step size adaptive algorithm in proportion to instantaneous absolute value is more stable and efficient than others.

  • Although least mean square(LMS) algorithm is known to one of the most popular algorithm in adaptive signal processing because of the simplicity and the small computation, the choice of the step size reflects a tradeoff between the misadjustment and the speed of adaptation. In this paper, we present a new variable step size LMS algorithm, so-called ECLMS(Estimated correlation LMS), using the correlation between reference input and error signal of adaptive filter. The proposed algorithm updates each weight of filter by different step size at same sample time. We applied this algorithm to adaptive multiple-notch filter. Simulation results are presented to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with the usual LMS algorithm and another variable step algorithm.

  • This paper presents a new Kurtosis driven Variable Step-Size Normalized Least Mean Square (KVSSN-LMS) algorithm to prevent repeater from oscillation due to feedback signal of radio frequency (RF) repeater. To get better Mean Square Error (MSE) performance, step-size is adjusted using the kurtosis. The proposed algorithm shows the better performance of steady state MSE. The proposed algorithm shows a better ERLE performance than that of KVSS-LMS, VSS-NLMS, NLMS algorithms.
