  • The reference model of an MRC (model reference control) provides the desired trajectory a plant should follow and thus the design of a reference model has a significant effect on control performance. In most control systems control input to a plant has some bounds and it is preferable to make use of as large control inputs as possible within the range of no saturation. In this paper a new approach of selecting the reference model is proposed for bounded control inputs. Design variables of the reference model are determined in such a way that maximizes the performance index within the range of no saturation. Moreover this variable reference model is regularly updated during control. This scheme is verified by application to the servo motor position control system in various simulations. The responses of the MRC with a variable reference model show better tracking performance than that with a fixed reference mode. Moreover by adjusting the update interval of the reference model the control performance can be further improved.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop learning materials for functional concept on variable and to verify the effect of how well students could learn functional concept after they studied with those materials. To accomplish the purpose of this study, I developed learning materials and after teaching students with them. I have concluded the followings : First, there was little effect in teaching functional concept on variable between two experimental groups, whereas teaching functional concept had greater effect on forming functional concept in high level groups in those two experimental groups. Second, teaching functional concept on variable had little effect on students' understanding of functional concept and perfecting tables in Black box, graph, and mathematical problems, whereas there was much effect in students' understanding functional concept and solving relation formula, image, and range problems related to everyday life or general things. On the basis of the problems which appeared in the process of this study, the following can be suggested : First, we should develop learning materials fit for low level students so that they could understand functional concept. Second, we should continue to teach the basic problems like solving relation formula, image, and range, and understanding functional concept in graph until students are able to understand them exactly. Third, since the goals of Unit Function in a middle school textbook is to solve problems related to everyday life through functional thinking, there should be change in constructing systematic contents of Unit Function in a middle school textbook.

  • A design and implementation method for the UHF-band(800MHz) variable attenuator using the 3dB coupler is proposed. The 90 degree, 3-dB Coupler is used for the variable attenuator. The principal theory for the 3-dB coupler is introduced. The 3-dB Coupler is designed by the mathematical analysis and a computer simulation tool. A PIN diode is used for the variable resistor at UHF-band. The variable attenuator using the 3-dB coupler and the PIN diode is designed and implemented. The measured results for the variable attenuator by a network analyzer show that the insertion loss is below -l0dB, and the continuous variable attenuation range is about 10dB.

  • As AI has a wide range of influence on human social life, issues of transparency and ethics of AI are emerging. In particular, it is widely known that due to the existence of historical bias in data against ethics or regulatory frameworks for fairness, trained AI models based on such biased data could also impose bias or unfairness against a certain sensitive group (e.g., non-white, women). Demographic disparities due to AI, which refer to socially unacceptable bias that an AI model favors certain groups (e.g., white, men) over other groups (e.g., black, women), have been observed frequently in many applications of AI and many studies have been done recently to develop AI algorithms which remove or alleviate such demographic disparities in trained AI models. In this paper, we consider a problem of using the information in the sensitive variable for fair prediction when using the sensitive variable as a part of input variables is prohibitive by laws or regulations to avoid unfairness. As a way of reflecting the information in the sensitive variable to prediction, we consider a two-stage procedure. First, the sensitive variable is fully included in the learning phase to have a prediction model depending on the sensitive variable, and then an imputed sensitive variable is used in the prediction phase. The aim of this paper is to evaluate this procedure by analyzing several benchmark datasets. We illustrate that using an imputed sensitive variable is helpful to improve prediction accuracies without hampering the degree of fairness much.

  • For wide locking range, an analog delay locked loop (DLL) was designed with the selective phase inversion scheme and the variable number of delay elements. The number of delay elements was determined adaptively depending on the clock cycle time. During the analog fine locking stage, a self-initializing 3-state phase detector was used to avoid the initial state problem associated with the conventional 3-state phase detector. With these schemes, the locking range of analog DLL was increased by four times compared to the conventional scheme according to the simulation results.

  • One method for improving the torque capacity of the CVT is to use a split-powered CVT(SPCVT) to reduce the power transmitted into a continuously variable unit(CVU). A variable bridge SPCVT with two planetary gear units(PGUs), which are composed of a sun gear, a ring gear, and carrier and planetary gears, can minimize the power to the CVU. However, a SPCVT with a conventional CVT should possess a dual mode, which would allow the conventional CVT to be used at high speeds and an additional gear train to be used at low speeds. The inner-spherical CVU(ISCVU) with an inner and outer spherical contact mechanism developed in this study can cover the range from low to high speeds. The rated power and the overall speed ratios were 100 kW and $0.09{\sim}0.36$, respectively. Power efficiency was numerically calculated to be over 90% over the speed ratio range of $0.1{\sim}0.29$. The maximum shear stress at the two contact areas of the rotor pairs, the minimum life and the overall size were estimated to be 700 MPa, 276 kh and $350{\times}350{\times}400mm^3$, respectively. This study shows that an ISCVU and a variable bridge type PGU can realize the SPCVT with a single mode for a vehicle.

  • A wind generator (WG) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system is presented here. It comprises of a variable-speed wind generator, a high-efficiency boost-type dc/dc converter and a control unit. The advantages of the aimed system are that it does not call for the knowledge of the wind speed or the optimal power characteristics and that it operates at a variable speed, thus providing high efficiency. The WG operates at variable speed and thus suffers lower stress on the shafts and gears compared to constant-speed systems. It results in a better exploitation of the available wind energy, especially in the low wind-speed range of 2.5-4.5 m/s. It does not depend on the WG wind and rotor-speed ratings or the dc/dc converter power rating. Higher reliability, lower complexity and cost, and less mechanical stress of the WG. It can be applied to battery-charging applications.

  • This paper suggests switching regulator technique to overcome the drawback of conventional variable linear power supply. Switching regulator technique can eliminate the extremely lossy operation and reduce the size and weight of variable linear power supply and provide nearly constant output power over the majority of output voltage range. The topology of variable switched mode power supply is employed active clamp forward converter with a current doubler rectifier and by using control of variable-frequency together with control of fixed-frequency, output voltage can be controled. Equivalent circuits pertinent to each operational mode of converter are derived, and an experimental 20V, 50A converter was designed and built. The converter operates from an output voltage of zero to 25 V, under 100 kHz switching frequency.

  • A cone cylinder is used to obtain variable operation conditions for the sonic ejector-diffuser system. The cone cylinder is designed to move upstream and downstream to change the ejector throat area ratio, thus obtaining variable mass flow rates. The present study investigates the effects of ejector throat area ratio and operating pressure ratio on the entrainment of secondary stream for the variable sonic ejector system. In experiment, the ejector throat area is varied in the range from ${\psi}=11.88$ to 66.69, and the operating pressure ratio from $p_{0p}/p_a=1.25$ to 9.0. The results show that the variable sonic ejector system is suitable for a required entrainment ratio of secondary stream by altering the ejector throat area ratio and operating pressure ratio.

The results show that the variable sonic ejector system can be operated to obtain specific entrainment ratio of secondary stream by altering the ejector throat area ratio and operating pressure ratio.o.
