The characteristics of capacity control using a variable speed compressor in an industrial cooler (산업용 냉각기의 압축기 회전수 변화에 따른 용량제어 특성)

  • This paper presents the capacity-control characteristics in an industrial cooler with a variable speed compressor. The inverter-type compressor is controlled by the rotational speed of the operational frequency. This type of the compressor performs the wide range of load compared to the on-off type. When the load of the system reduces, the rotational speed will be reduced. Thus, the system leads to the less power consumption and extends the longer durability of the compressor. With the variable rotational speed of the compressor the cooling capacity of the cooler is about 1.6-3.6 kW and the capacity control is about 40-100%. The system showed the highest efficiency when the rotational speed is about 45-70 Hz. The results can be used as the basic design data to control an industrial cooler.

  • In order to investigate the cooling capacity of an air-conditioner applying a variable capacity compressor and the temperature characteristics on a condenser and an evaporator, the experiment on the operation characteristics of the air-conditioner was performed along a compressor operation ratio and an indoor/outdoor temperatures, under a cooling operation mode. The system characteristics were measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The cooling capacity increased with decreasing the outdoor temperature and increasing the indoor temperature. Also, it increased with increasing the compressor operation ratio. The temperature of the condenser was more sensitive for the variation of the outdoor temperature and the temperature of the evaporator was more sensitive for the variation of the indoor temperature. The operation characteristics of the cycle used in this present were also analyzed by a pressure-enthalpy chart.

  • The paper presents the characteristics of capacity control of variable speed water cooler with the electronic expansion valve open/close degree. It is a preliminary study on the optimum control of the water cooler system using a variable speed compressor controlled by inverter. The electronic expansion valve controlled by the variation of compressor speed maintains the constant degree of superheat at the evaporator outlet, which aims to find the degree of superheat obtaining the optimum refrigeration effect. The investigation indicates that there is a point achieving the maximum cooling capacity by the variation of the electronic expansion valve open/close degree with constant compressor speed.

  • In order to investigate the cooling and heating characteristics of a variable-capacity system A/C using a digital scroll compressor, the cooling and heating capacities and EER are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The capacity of the system is controlled by the digital scroll compressor, which is operated by controling PWM valve and the loading vs. unloading time. When the system A/C is operated under the cooling and heating standard conditions, EER is nearly uniform but cooling capacity and heating capacity increase at minimum, rated and maximum modes. When the auxiliary heater is on, at the cold region, the system A/C produces the excellent heating capacity.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigated the effect of refrigerant flow control on the performance of a variable-speed heat pump operating in both cooling and heating mode. For this purpose, cooling and heating capacity, EER and refrigerant mass flow rate corresponding to an electronic valve as well as a capillary tube were measured as functions of compressor speed, length of capillary tube (or valve opening of the electronic valve), refrigerant charge, and outdoor temperature. From the comparison of experimental results, it was found that the performance variation due to the electronic valve opening became significant as the operating conditions(outdoor temperature and compressor speed) deviated from the standard condition at which heating capacity and EER were rated for the indicated capillary tube.

  • In order to investigate the cooling and heating characteristics of a variable-capacity system A/C applying a digital scroll compressor, the cooling and heating capacities and COP are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The capacity of the system is controlled by the digital scroll compressor, which is operated by controling PWM valve and the loading vs. unloading time. In the case of unloading compared that of loading, the consumption power of the compressor is about 11% and the capacity variation of the system A/C is within about 1%. When the system A/C is operated under the cooling and heating standard conditions, COP is nearly uniform but cooling capacity and heating capacity increase at minimum, rated and maximum modes. The system A/C applying the digital scroll compressor is effective for the range with high load or the width of large load variation. When the auxiliary heater is on, at the cold region, the system A/C produces the excellent heating capacity.

  • Vapor injection technique has been applied to prevent performance degrdation of a heat pump at low ambient temperatures. In this study, the heating performance of a heat pump with a variable speed injection scroll compressor using R-410A was investigated by applying sub-cooler vapor injection(SCVI) and flash tank vapor injection(FTVI). The heating performance of the heat pump was measured by varying compressor frequency and outdoor temperature. The heating capacity of the FTVI system was 8~10% higher than that of the SCVI system at all operating conditions. On the other hand, the heating performance improvement with the increase in the compressor frequency was more prominent in the SCVI system than in the FTVI system.

  • In the present study, the variation of input power and efficiency improvement of a scroll compressor applying PWM method are experimentally investigated. The cooling capacity, input power and COP are measured under the cooling operation. The input power due to the change of the condenser and the coil addition in a main current part is measured to enhance the compressor efficiency. Measured results show that the input power and COP increase with increasing the tooling capacity. And the minimum input power of the compressor is observed. By the adoption of the double system, the consumption of compressor input power is reduced, compared with the existing system.

  • Experimental investigation on the performance of a heat pump system using refrigerant mixtures is done. The condenser and the evaporator are double pipe heat exchangers of counter flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. The refrigerant mixture used in the experiment is R22/R142b. Experiments are performed by changing the compressor speed, composition on ratio of mixture, and the average temperatures of condenser and evaporator. The compressor work, heating capacity and the coefficient of performance are calculated. Results show that the heating capacity can be changed by varying the mass flow rate of refrigerant mixtures to meet the heating load. It is shown that the capacity control by changing the composition ratio is more effective than by changing the compressor speed. Under the condition where the external conditions are fixed and the heating loads are equal, the coefficient of performance has its maximum value near 50 : 50 mass fraction of the refrigerant mixture in this study.

  • This study presents the experimental study on improvement of frost/defrost performance in an heat pump system with newly developed fin and multiple compressors. As multiple compressors system, the variable and single speed compressor combinations has been introduced and compared with single speed 1-compressor system in a view point of improvement of frost/defrost performance. Also, newly developed corrugate shaped fin has been compared with conventional louver shaped fin. The frost/defrost performance is defined and some parameters are compared to discuss the effect of each combination. From this experimental study, it is known that if the variable and single speed compressor combination system equipped with corrugate shaped fin, the system performance has greatly improved not only for heating capacity, but also for frost performance.
