  • Purpose: This study was done to explore the meaning and nature of life world for adolescents with epilepsy. The hermeneutic phenomenological method which was developed by van Manen was used. Methods: Participants were four boys and five girls, ages 13 to 18 being seen in a neurology outpatient department. Data were collected from iterative work with in-depth interviews from during the period from February to September, 2010. Contents of the interviews were tape-recorded with participant consent. Results: Essential themes that fit into the context of the 4 existential grounds of body, time, space and other people were: an illness that makes a hurt in one's heart rather than one's body, a change in the body that is not controllable, a future like thick fog, everyday life trapped in illness, a change of relationships, learning how to live with an illness. Conclusion: Findings reveal the life world of the adolescents is affected to varying degrees by the epilepsy. It is important for nurses to identify and address developmental issues and effects of the illness and to support reorientation in a disintegrated life situation. The result of this study will provide nurses with insights into these experiences and should help promote empathetic care.

  • Purpose: Safety concerns regarding the use of disposable sanitary pads have emerged as a social issue in Korea, and some have advocated alternatives to alleviate these concerns. However, menstrual cups are rarely viewed as an option because of the sociocultural climate. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Korean women that use menstrual cups. Methods: Hermeneutic phenomenology as suggested by Van Manen was utilized for the study. Fourteen women, who had been using menstrual cups, were recruited and asked to participated in face-to-face interviews. Interview data were transcribed and coded by lifeworld existentials. Results: Four fundamental themes were emerged from the data: adaption to menstrual cups, body's various responses towards the menstrual cups, the menstrual cups being unwelcomed in Korean society, and our various perspectives towards menstrual cups. Conclusion: We could observe not only the positive experiences in terms of using menstrual cups but also the various difficulties and challenges of using those menstrual cups in Korean society. We hope that the findings could be used as the evidence for developing health education contents and policies to promote women's health.

  • Purpose: This study was done to explore the lived experiences in older Korean women with early stage of Parkinson's disease. The research question was "What is the meaning and nature of the older women's experiences who were diagnosed with Parkinson's disease?" Methods: In this study, we adopted van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach to find the lived experiences of older women diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Six older women diagnosed with Parkinson's disease within five years participated, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. Results: Five fundamental lifeworld themes and seven subthemes emerged from the data. The first theme of corporeality had three subthemes: 'being shocked by an unexpected diagnosis', 'fewer things can be done due to the illness' and 'lost my prettiness'. The second theme representing relationality was 'hiding the illness because of others' whispering'. The temporality theme was 'fear of symptom aggravation'. The spatiality theme was 'being placed in a blind spot of information'. The last existential theme of material had 'obsession with drugs'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide an in-depth understanding of older womens experiences of living with Parkinson's disease. The findings can help develop interventions specific to these group of women to provide sufficient emotional support and accurate information.

  • The purpose of this study was to synthesize and interpret the findings of previous qualitative studies that investigated the lived experiences of Korean emerging adults who aged out of the foster care system. Based on our selection criteria, we extracted and analyzed 14 papers that were published between 2010 to 2023. Our meta-synthesis found that the emerging adults' life world consisted of seven domains: family experience, life tasks, education and work, financial issues, home and family, interpersonal relationships, and psychological and emotional issues. We restructured the emerging adults' lived experiences using van Manen's concepts of lived time, lived space, lived things, lived self-other, and lived body. Our meta-synthesis revealed that these emerging adults experienced multidimensional difficulties due to shortcomings of formal and informal social support after aging out of the foster care system. Their difficulties accumulated in their interaction with lived time. Based on the level of their accumulated difficulties, we categorized the emerging adults into stable, struggling, and isolated groups. However, it is important to note that many of them adapted to their own life world and strived to move forward. This qualitative meta-synthesis provides a comprehensive understanding and new interpretation of emerging adults who transition from foster care to independent living in the context of Korea.

  • With the sharp increase of the oil price, the issue of the energy saving requires even higher propulsive efficiency of the propellers. Traditionally the propellers have been designed with the criteria such as that of Lerbs optimum based on the lifting line theory and the empirical formulae of Lerbs and van Manen giving relations of the wake pitch with the wake non-uniformity. With the aid of the high speed computer, it is now possible to apply the time-consuming iterative approaches for the solution of the lifting surface problems. In this paper we formulate the variational problem to optimize the efficiency of the propeller operating in the given ship wake using the lifting surface method. The variational formulation relating the spanwise circulation distribution with the propulsive efficiency to be maximized is however non-linear in circulation distribution functions, thus the iterative method is applied to the quasi-linearized equations. The blade shape design also requires the iterative procedures, because the shape of the blade which is represented by the lifting surface is unknown a priori. The numerical code was validated with the DTNSRDC propeller 4119 which is well-known to be optimum in uniform inflow condition. In addition existing (well-designed) commercial propellers were selected and compared with the results of the open water tests and the self-propulsion tests.

  • Purpose: The study was done to explore lived experience of Japanese women taking care of chronically ill parents-in-law at home under the Korean family culture emphasizing filial piety. Method: van Manen's Hermeneutic Phenomenology research method was applied to conduct in-depth analysis on the meaning and nature of those experiences. This method derives the universal and fundamental aspect of human being. Results: There were 8 essential themes derived from the Japanese marriage-immigrants' experiences taking care of parents-in-law with chronic diseases as followings: 'stuck in a situation in which I am obligated to take care of the parent-in-law', 'hard to be the only person responsible to take care of the parent-in-law', 'unaccustomed to the Korean filial duty culture', 'the adverse effect of Korean-Japan history on taking care of the parent-in-law', 'refusing to let the taking care of the parent-in-law to be a shackle of my life', 'starting to be willing to take care of the parent-in-law', 'following through with my own way of taking care of the parent-in-law without being swayed by what others say', 'growing in the process of taking care of the parent-in-law'. Conclusion: The study results broadened ground to understand the experiences taking care of chronically ill parent-in-law from Japanese marriage-immigrants' social and cultural perspectives.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to uncover the fundamental nature of living alone in female elderly. Methods: The phenomenological research approach developed by van Manen was adopted. Results: The theme was 'taking a firm stand alone on the edges of life'. The composition elements of living alone experienced by elderly women were as follows: 1) Corporeality: participants perceived their bodies by their health status. Unhealthy participants were suffering with diseases and dependant on other persons, while healthy participants were free from family responsibility and kept on moving. 2) Spatiality: participants felt both freedom and loneliness while they stayed home. 3) Relationality: participants felt pity and yearning for their bereaved husband and sometimes talked to his picture. According to their children's filial piety, participants were pleased or displeased. However, they incessantly devoted themselves to their children. 4) Temporality: participants considered the rest of their life as extra-time which was proceeding to death, and tried to keep themselves busy before they died. Conclusion: A nurse should understand the multifarious aspects of elderly women's life, and then intervene to consolidate their strengths for self-supporting the final years of life.

  • This Qualitative nursing research was made with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to find out the meaning and nature of human's experience. The purpose of the inquiry is to find out the meaning and to understand the nature of Joint pain's experience of women in the island and to apply the result to nursing practice. The study was guided by Shin Kyung Rim's four step that revised van Manen's method for doing research. The method of inquiry included : turning to interesting phenomenon. inquiring and investigating experience as it was lived rather than as conceptualized ; reflecting and analyzing essential themes which characterize phenomenon ; and describing phenomenon through art and literature. Multiple strategies for data collecting were needed : deep face to face interview ; analysis of joint pain of women's writings ; describing and analysis of examples of the phenomenon in art, literature. Through this process essensial them of the experience was emerged : Misery that I would like to cut off my body, Sea wind soaking deeply into the bones, Dull pain from the postpartum cold wind, The another suffer I should endure by myself, Recrudesce despite all the try I have made, Often forgetting the pain of every Joint for hardship of life. Findings from artistic and creative inquiry further was validated and meaning was discovered. The study illuminated meaning and simultaneously validated the phenomenological research process. Essential themes for understanding women joint pain's experience, implications, for education, research and practice, direction and need for continuing inquiry were identified.
