  • Purpose: This paper is a fundamental study on the applicability of the smart bolt developed for monitoring system to detect the leakage of water supply valve. Method: A leak detection experiments were conducted using the smart bolt having embedded strain sensors and accelerometer. The smart bolt used in study meets the allowable criteria of torque and tensile stress for water supply system, and it can be applied to a joint of the water supply valve by behaving well within the allowable limits. Result: As a result of the simulated leak tests, a leak signal at the valve leak point was detected in a band of 60Hz, and the main pipe leaking point was observed to produce a leak signal having much higher frequency than that of the valve leak point. This seems to result in a total coupled vibration under unconfined conditions of the pipes. Conclusion: The smart bolts appeared applicable to detecting a leaking signal from the water supply valve.

  • A great deal of exhaust gas inside a combustion room goes out through exhaust pipe but residual gas, is called "Blowby gas", enters the crankcase through a small gap between the piston and the cylinder wall. Here, if the crankcase isn't vented, this causes many bad effects such as lubricant oil contamination, corrosion by that and crankcase explosion by rising pressure. So, most automobiles are constituted with a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system to prevent previous problems. PCV valve is the most important part in this ventilation system. When companies are manufacturing new engines, engineers are designing it depending on their experiments than theoretical knowledge. Mush efforts and times are needed for new development. This study will show quantitative results to increase the possibilities of reduction of developing time.

  • Concerns related to protecting, identifying, and isolating of subsystems of a water distribution network have led to the realization of the increased importance of valves in the system. The most important purpose of valves in water distribution systems is to isolate subsystems due to breakage, maintenance activities, or contamination. A subsystem called segment is isolated by the closure of adjacent valves and an efficient algorithm should identify the adjacent valves to minimize the pipe failure impact. In this paper, an algorithm to identify adjacent valves to be closed to isolate a subsystem from the remainder of a network in case of a pipe failure is presented. An application to the water distribution system in Ottawa, Canada demonstrates the developed algorithm efficiently locates the adjacent valves for the isolation of a broken pipe.

  • In this paper, the response of an underground fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) composite pipe system subjected to realistic loading scenarios that may be experienced by an actual buried pipeline is investigated. The model replicates an arbitrary site with a length of buried pipeline, passing through a $90^{\circ}$ bend and into a valve pit. Various loading conditions, which include effects of pipe pressurization, differences in response between stainless steel and fibreglass composite pipes and severe loss of bed-soil support are studied. In addition to pipe response, the resulting soil stresses and ground settlement are also analysed. Furthermore, the locations of potential leakage and burst have also been identified by evaluating the contact pressures at the joints and by comparing stresses to the pipe hoop and axial failure strengths.

  • In the nuclear power plant, emergency core coolant system(ECCS) is furnished at reactor coolant system(RCS) in order to cool down high temperature water in case of emergency. However, in this coolant system, thermal stratification phenomenon can be occurred due to coolant leaking in the check valve. The thermal stratification produces excessive thermal stresses at the pipe wall so as to yield thermal fatigue crack(TFC) accident. In the present study, when the turbulence penetration occurs in the branch piping, the maximum temperature differences of fluid at the pipe cross-sections of the T-branch with thermal stratification are examine

  • In this paper, Firstly, it is shown that the high vibration source of piping system is the pulsation transmission of pipe line element, such as, orifice plate, valves and the control valve is a broad band source and the branch wall and the cavity have vortex frequency. Secondly, in order to decrese the high vibration of piping system, some practical Friction damper with high damping have been developed and its effectiveness is investigated as installing it at piping system practically.

  • Thermal performance of pipe network of continuous heating system controlled by thermostat and flow control valve was simulated in consideration of radiation heat transfer and solved by linear analysis method. Thermal performance of real apartment building with radiant floor heating system was simulated by equivalence heat resistance-capacity method. This method enables to simulate the unsteady variation of temperature or each element of building. Heat transfer characteristics of each element were also investigated.

  • A five path ultrasonic and/or magnetic flowmeter were installed after valve. Five path ultrasonic flowmeter were tested to obtain it's performance in a water flow standard system and magnetic flowmeter. It's varied with straight pipe length(nD), install direction and valve position. All the results are summerized. The multi-path flowmeters(MUF) showed up to $\pm0.5{\%}$ at a 2, 4, 8, 15D spacing : the MUF was significantly better than magnetic flowmeter at disturbed flow conditions.

  • Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stroke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air maybe made to flow intermittently through a pipe. In this paper a exhaust system simulator of engine was used to experimentally analyzer the decrease inflow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables, other than rotational speed, give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.

  • Measurement techniques for the in-duct source characteristics of fluid machines can be classified into direct method and load method, according to whether the technique employs an external acoustic source or not. It has been known that the two methods yield different results and the load method used to come up with a negative source resistance, in spite of the fact that a very accurate prediction of radiated noise can be obtained by using any result. This paper is focused to the effect of time-varying nature of fluid machines on the output result. For this purpose, a simplified fluid machine consisting of a reservoir, a valve and a pipe is considered as representing a typical linear, periodic, time-varying system and the measurement techniques are simulated by utilizing the Hill equation and its steady-state forced response. In the load method, the source impedance turns out being dependent on the valve impedance at the calculation frequency and the valve and load impedances at other frequencies as well.
