  • Various alloy system, such as Cu-Sn-Ti, Cu-Ag-Ti, and Ni-B-Cr-based alloy are used for the brazing of diamond grits. However, the problem of the adhesion strength between the diamond grits and the brazed alloy is presented. The adhesion strength between the diamond grits and the melting filler alloy is predicted by the contact angle, thereby, instead of diamond grit, the study on the wettability between the graphite and the brazing alloy has been indirectly executed. In this study, Cu-13Sn-12Ti filler alloy was manufactured, and the contact angles, the shear strengths and the interfacial area between the graphites (diamond grits) and braze matrix were investigated. The contact angle was decreased on increasing holding time and temperature. The results of shear strength of the graphite joints brazed filler alloys were observed that the joints applied Cu-13Sn-12Ti alloy at brazing temperature $940^{\circ}C$ was very sound condition indicating the shear tensile value of 23.8 MPa because of existing the widest carbide(TiC) reaction layers. The micrograph of wettability of the diamond grit brazed filler alloys were observed that the brazement applied Cu-13Sn-12Ti alloy at brazing temperature $990^{\circ}C$ was very sound condition because of existing a few TiC grains in the vicinity of the TiC layers.

  • In the present study, the effect of variation in alloying elements on the carbide formation behavior during casting and homogenization treatment of M2 high speed steels was investigated. M2 high speed steels of various compositions were produced by vacuum induction melting. Contents of C, Cr, W, Mo, and V were varied from the basic composition of 0.8C, 0.3Si, 0.2Mn, 4.0Cr, 6.0W, 5.0Mo, and 2.0V in weight percent. Homogenization treatment at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hr followed by furnace cooling was performed on the ingots. Area fraction and chemical compositions of eutectic carbide in as-cast and homogenized ingots were analyzed. Area fraction of eutectic carbide appeared to be higher in the ingots with higher contents of alloying elements the area fraction of eutectic carbide also appeared to be higher on the surface regions than in the center regions of ingots. As a result of the homogenization treatment, $M_2C$ carbide, which was the primary eutectic carbide in the as-cast ingots, decomposed into thermodynamically stable carbides, MC and $M_6C$. The latter carbide was found to be the main one after homogenization. Fine carbides uniformly distributed in the matrix was found to be MC type carbide and coarsened by homogenization.

  • Cr-Si based alloys are not only excellent in corrosion resistance at high temperatures, but also have good wear resistance due to the formation of Cr3Si phase, therefore they are promising as metallic coating materials. Aluminum is often added to Cr-Si alloys to improve the oxidation resistance through which stable alumina surface film is formed. On the other hand, due to the addition of aluminum, various Al-containing phases may be formed and may negatively affect the heat resistance of the Cr-Si-Al alloys, so detailed investigation is required. In this study, two Cr-Si-Al alloys (high-Si & high-Al) were prepared in the form of cast ingots through a vacuum arc melting process and the microstructural changes after high temperature heating process were investigated. In the case of the cast high-Si alloy, a considerable amount of Cr3Si phase was formed, and its hardness was significantly higher than that of the cast high-Al alloy. Also, Al-rich phases (with the high Al/Cr ratio) were not found much compared to the high-Al alloy. Meanwhile, it was observed that the amount of the Al-rich phases reduced by the annealing heat treatment for both alloys. In the case of the high temperature heating at 1,400 ℃, no significant microstructural change was observed in the high Si alloy, but a little more coarse and segregated AlCr phases were found in the high Al alloy compared to the cast state.

  • This research presents tetrahedral amorphous (ta-C) coating on the artificial tooth for improving the durability and functionality (esthtics, foreign body of tooth) by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA). A differentiated coating method is required for a ta-C coating on polymer owing to the low melting point of the polymer, inter-facial adhesion, low friction, and non-conductivity. Herein, ta-C coating is applied below 50℃, and the potential difference of the carbon plasma drawn to the substrate was controlled by applying a positive duct bias voltage without using a substrate bias voltage. Consequently, the ta-C coating with a thickness of 70nm using the duct bias condition of 20V with the highest plasma intensity satisfies the esthetics of the artificial tooth and had a 5B level of inter-facial adhesion. In addition, the composite hardness of ta-C/polymer is 380 MPa, and correlations with esthetics, sp3 bonding, and mechanical properties. The friction coefficient (CoF) of the ta-C coating in a water-lubricated environment is 0.07, showing a six-fold reduction in CoF compared with that of a polymer.

  • Starting ingot of $Pr_{15}Fe_{77}B_{8}$ were prepared by vacuum induction melting under argon atmosphere. The ingot were induction melted in a quartz crucible and then ejected as a molten alloy throuth a 0.6 mrn orifice onto a rotating cop¬per wheel. An anisotropic magnet was prepared from ribbon by hot deformation techniques. A fully dense precursor magnet first made by pressing ribbons at $680^{\circ}C$ under a pressure of $21.8\;kg/mm^{2}$. A substantially oriented magnets were obtained by die-upset under various conditions. As the compression ratio increases, the $B_{r}$ value increases pronouncedly though $_{i}H_{c}$ decreases. Also, XRD analyses show increased diffraction peak from (006). From these results, it can be known that the magnetic easy axis was formed along the compression axis. As the die-upset speed increases, $_{i}H_{c}$ increases though $B_{r}$ decreases. The $B_{r}$ increases up to $750^{\circ}C$ of die-upset temperature and above this temperature decreases. The value of $4{\pi}M_{s}$ of the $Pr_{15}Fe_{77}B_{8}$ alloy prepared is found to be 11.8 KG. When the alloy was compressed by 0.8 under the die-upset speed of 0.05 m/sec at $750^{\circ}C$, $B_{r}$ was 11.0 KG indicating that the alloy has excellent magnetic anistropy. However, this alloy has some limitation because of low $_{i}H_{c}$.

  • The growth characteristics of 4-fold grain which was appeared in KLN deposition on $Pt/Ti/SiO_2/Si(100)$ substrate was studied by varying process variables. Substrate temperature, sputtering pressure, rf power were selected as process variables, and experiment was carried out near optimum fabrication condition. When using K and Li enriched target, the optimum fabrication conditions were substrate temperature of $600^{\circ}C$, sputtering pressure of 150mTorr, rf power of 100 W and its surface morphology is sensitively varied by small deposition condition changes. KLN is composed of elements which have large difference of boiling point. And it is difficult to fabricate thin film at high temperature and high vacuum deposition condition. Furthermore the phenomenon during deposition process can not be explained by using Thorton's model which explains the relation between thin film structure and melting point of thin film materials. These phenomenon can be explained using boiling point of elements which consist of thin film material.

  • Several high nitrogen stainless steel ingots(100kg) were fabricated with changing Ni and $[N]_2$ contents by Pressurized Vacuum Induction Melting(P_VIM). After free forging process, chemical compositions, microstructure and mechanical properties were estimated. Hardness was increased with the increase of $[N]_2$ content. Furthermore, microstructure including a lot of tempering twins was observed with optical microscope. Mechanical properties were estimated as function of solution treatment temperature and cooling method(air/water) under duration time of 1 hr on sample that were fabricated with Ni content under the atmospheric $[N]_2$ pressure. At solution treatment range of $1050{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$, hardness was decreased with the increase of solution temperature and there were little discrepancy of microstructure and hardness with cooling method. Computer simulation was carried out in order to inspect pass schedule in cold rolling process. When the condition of simulation was roll speed of 2.5mpm, rolling rate $15{\sim}17%$ per pass, it was ascertained that the formation such as deformation by sticking and lamellar sliver etc. was restricted from a simulation.

  • Abstract Co-and/or AI-added Nd-Fe-B-based magnetic alloys were fabricated by using vacuum induction melting frunace, and melt-spun ribbons were made of the magnetic alloys with single roll rapid quenching method. The variation of magnetic properties of the melt-spun ribbons as a function of Cuwheel velocity (Vs) were investigated. Bonded magnets were made of the optimally quenched ribbon fragments, and the magnetic properties of the melt-spun ribbons and the bonded magnets were studied, relating to the microstructure and crystalline structure. Cu-wheel surface velocity had a strong effect on the magnetic properties of the melt-spun ribbons, and the maximum properties were obtained around Vs =20m/sec. The optimally quenched ribbon had a cellura-type microstructure, in which fine N$d_2$F$e_14$B grains were surrounded by thin Nd-rich phase. In case of a 2.1at% AI-added melt-spun ribbon, the magnetic properties were as follows: iHc, Br, and (BH)max were 15.5KOe, 7.8KG and 8.5MGOe respectively. And resin bonded magnets were fabricated by mixing optimally quenched ribbon fragments with 2.5wt % polyamide resin, compacting and binding at room temperature. The iHc, Br and (BH)max of bonded magnet were lO.2KOe, 4.4KG and 3.3MGOe respectively. And hot-pressed magnets were made by pressing the overquenched ribbons at high temperature. The magnetic properties of hot-pressed magnets were better than those of bonded magnets, and when the holding time was 8 minutes, the iHc, Br, and (BH)max of the hot-pressed magnet were 1O.8KOe, 7.3KG and 8.0MGOe respectively. Domain structure was mainly maze pattern, which means that the easy magnetization axis could be aligned, and the domain width of the hot-pressed magnets was smaller than that of bonded magnets.

  • In this study, binderless consolidation processes of ultra foe Si powder, by-products of making high purity poly-Si in the current method, were systematically investigated for use as economical solar-grade feedstock. The average diameter of the silicon powder was $7.8{\mu}m$. The main contaminants of the fine silicon powder were $SiO_2$ type oxide and humidity. The chemical pretreatment using the HF solution was observed to be effective for the improvement of the compactability of the silicon powder and the density ratio and the strength of the silicon powder compacts. The yield of the binder-free consolidation process increased by 20% under a vacuum condition. In as-received state, the silicon powder were not pure enough to be used as solar grade feed-stock material. After the dry chemical treatments, a sufficiently high purity above solar-grade was able to be achieved.

  • Horse fat was vacuum-extracted from fatty tissues of Jeju and Halla horse meat and their physicochemical properties were compared to those of commercial lard and beef-tallow. For color, ${\Delta}E$ was found to be decreased when crystallized. Although acid values of horse fat were higher than those of lard and beef-tallow, p-anisidine and totox values were lower. The iodine value of beef-tallow was the lowest (44.61), and those of horse fat and lard were similar (57.53-57.74). Only horse fat contained ${\alpha}-tocopherol$. The contents of ${\gamma}-tocopherol$ in Jeju and Halla horse fat, lard, and beef-tallow were 7.08, 4.57, 2.13, and 1.91 mg/kg, respectively. Palmitoleic acid ($C_{16:1}$) was found in horse fat. Melting and crystallization curves of horse fat displayed two endothermic and exothermic peaks which were differentiated from lard and beef-tallow. These results indicated that horse fat demonstrates different physicochemical properties compared to lard and beef-tallow, when applied to various types of lipid products.
