  • A Large thermal vacuum chamber (LTVC) for space environment simulation on large satellites was successfully developed and constructed by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) in Korea with a local company. This chamber has an effective diameter of 8 meters and depth of 10 meters, and is composed of vacuum system, thermal control system, and anti-vibration system. Temperature below $-190^{\circ}C$ is maintained over the thermal shroud wrapping a satellite under $3.7{\times}10^{-5}Pa$ ($5{\times}10^{-7}torr$) vacuum level, and optical test can be done in this chamber by seismic mass with $10^{-5}g_{rms}$ or lower vibration level. In addition, the shroud temperature can be increased up to $123^{\circ}C$ using halogen lamps. Chamber control program based on PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) could control this large thermal vacuum chamber automatically.

  • A vacuum chamber temperature control system of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) storage ring is a subsystem upgraded PAL control system, which is based upon Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) [1]. There are two control components, data acquisition system (SA120 data logger), development control system IOC (Input/Output Controller) at the storage ring of PAL. There are 240 vacuum chamber at the storage ring. It was a very important problem to solve how to monitor such a large number of vacuum chamber temperature distributed around the ring. The IOC connect MODBUS/JBUS field network to asynchronous serial ports for communication with serial device. It can simultaneously control up to 4 data acquisition systems. Upon receiving a command from a IOC running under Windows2k through the network, the IOC communicate through the slave serial interface ports to SA120. We added some software components on the top of EPICS toolkit. The design of the vacuum control system is discussed. This paper describes the development vacuum chamber temperature control system and how the design of this system.

  • A thermal vacuum chamber is mainly used to simulate thermal environments of a test satellite in satellite orbits in which daily temperature variations range from 80K to above 400K depending on solar radiation under the vacuum below $10^{-4}$ torr. The test facility is quite complex and consists of expensive parts. So any modification of control software is discouraged in fear of unexpected system failure. The purpose of this study is to develop a realtime dynamics model of the thermal vacuum chamber in view of controller design and simulate its electrical inputs and outputs for interface with a PLC (programmable logic controller). A PLC program that was used in the thermal vacuum chamber is applied to the realtime simulator. The realized simulator dynamics is found to be quite similar to that of the thermal vacuum chamber and serve to an appropriate plant to verify the control performance of a programmed PLC.

  • The present paper studies the thermally-induced vibration phenomenon of the flexible space boom structure. In order to simulate the thermally-induced vibration phenomenon of the flexible thin boom structure of the spacecraft with the attached tip mass in space, the thermally-induced vibration including thermal flutter is experimentally investigated at various thermal environments using a heating lamp in vacuum chamber. In this experimental study, fluctuating characteristics, natural frequency and thermal strains of the thermally-induced vibration are parametrically investigated at various thermal environment conditions. Finally the thermally-induced vibration of the flexible boom structure of the orbiting earth satellite in solar radiation environment from the earth eclipse region including umbra and penumbra is simulated using the power control of the heating lamp in the vacuum chamber.

  • It is not efficient and scarcely out of the question to use commercial expensive electron beam lithography system widely used for semiconductor fabrication process for the manufacturing application field of various devices in the small business scope. Then scanning electron microscope based electron beam machining system is maybe regarded as a powerful model can be used for it simply. To get a complete suite of thus proper system, proper chamber with high vacuum condition is necessarily required more than anything else to modify scanning electron microscope. In this study, special chamber unit using rotary pump and diffusion pump to obtain high vacuum degree was designed and manufactured and various evaluation tests fur recognize the vacuum characteristic were accomplished.

  • A mathematical model and control laws for an Electronic-Vacuum Booster (EVB) for application to vehicle cruise control will be presented. Also this paper includes performance test result of EVB and vehicle cruise control experiments. The pressure difference between the vacuum chamber and the apply chamber is controlled by a PWM-solenoid-valve. Since the pressure at the vacuum chamber is identical to that of the engine intake manifold, the output of the electronic-vacuum booster Is sensitive to engine speed. The performance characteristics of the electronic-vacuum booster have been investigated via computer simulations and vehicle tests. The mathematical model of the electronic-vacuum booster developed in this study and a two-state dynamic engine model have been used in the simulations. It has been shown by simulations and vehicle tests that the EVB-cruise control system can provide a vehicle with good distance control performance in both high speed and low speed stop and go driving situations.

  • This paper describes a theoretical analysis and experimental verification on the performances of a vacuum-compatible air bearing, which is designed with a cascaded exhaust scheme to minimize the air leakage in a vacuum environment. The design of the vacuum-compatible air bearing equipped with the differential exhaust system requires great care because several design parameters, such as the number of exhaust stages, diameter of exhaust tube, pumping speed of a vacuum pump, and bearing clearance greatly influence the air leakage and thus degree of vacuum. In this study, a performance analysis method was proposed to estimate the performances of the air bearing, such as load capacity, stiffness, and air leakage. Results indicate that the load capacity and stiffness of the air bearing was improved as its boundary pressure, which was determined by the $1^{st}$ exhaust method, was lowered, and the dominant factors on the chamber's degree of vacuum were the number of exhaust stages, exhaust tube diameter and bearing clearance. A vacuum chamber and air bearing stage using porous pad were fabricated to verify the theoretical analysis. The results demonstrate that chamber pressure up to an order of $10^{-3}$ Pa was achieved with the air bearing stage operating inside the chamber, and this analysis method was valid by comparing predicted values with experimental data, for the mass flow rates from the porous pad, and pressures at each exhaust port and chamber, respectively.

  • A dynamic flow system has been developed which can be used for vacuum gauge calibration by comparison method - a calibration method in which the reading of the gauge under calibration is compared to another calibrated vacuum gauge called the "secondary standard" - and other vacuum-related experiments. The chamber of the calibration system is pumped by a turbomolecular pump (TMP), backed by a scroll pump. As maximum acceptable pressure at the inlet of a TMP is 0.1 Pa, above which the TMP decelerates, the pumping speed decreases and it becomes more difficult to adjust pressure under such circumstances. In the present work, high pressures of up to 133 Pa have been generated in the chamber of the newly developed dynamic flow control system by installing a well-designed conductance-reducer in the by-pass line and, at the same time, operating the TMP in safe mode. In addition, the gas flow and pressure distribution within the chamber have been investigated for the entire pressure range (0.1 Pa ~ 133 Pa) while generating pressure dynamically. Maximum deviations in pressure (1.6 %) were observed at point C on the chamber, which is close to the gas inlet port on the top of the chamber.
