  • VaRTM(Vacuum assisted resin transfer molding) and VAP(Vacuum assisted process) processes are a type of RTM(Resin transfer molding) process, and are typical out-of-autoclave (OOA) processes that can manufacture large structures at low cost. In this paper, a resin filling test was conducted to compare the VaRTM and VAP processes, and the filling process and dimensional stability were compared. In addition, an analysis method to simulate the filling process was developed, and a dielectric sensor was used to detect the flow front of the resin, which was compared with the analysis results. From the resin filling test, the total filling time of the composite plate was measured to be 48 minutes for the VAP process and 145 minutes for the VaRTM process, and the filling time by the VAP process was reduced by about 67%. In addition, it was confirmed that the VAP process was superior to the VaRTM process in the thickness control ability and uniformity of the composite plate.

  • Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasmas have recently garnered much attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties that are sometimes significantly different from those of low pressure plasmas. It can offer many possible application areas including nano and bio/medical areas. Many different types of plasma sources have been developed for specific needs, which can be one of the important merits of the atmospheric pressure plasmas since characteristics of the produced plasma depend significantly on operating parameters such as driving frequency, supply gas type, driving voltage waveform, gas flow rate, gas composition, geometrical factor etc. Among many source configurations, parallel plate type geometry is one of the simplest configurations so that it can offer many insights for understanding basic underlying physics. Traditionally, the parallel plate type set up has been studied actively for understanding low pressure plasma physics along with extensive employment in industries for the same reason. By considering that understanding basic physics, in conjunction with plasma-surface interactions especially for nano & bio materials, should be pursued in parallel with applications, we investigated atmospheric pressure discharge characteristics in a parallel plate type capacitive discharge source with two parallel copper electrodes of 60 mm in diameter and several millimeters in gap distance. In this presentation, some plasma characteristics by varying many operating variables such as inter-electrode distance, gas pressure, gas composition, driving frequency etc will be discussed. The results may be utilized for plasma control for widening application flexibility.

  • Nowadays Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) is widely used in different industries such as chemical, food and pharmaceutical process and refrigeration due to the efficient heat transfer performance, extreme compact design and efficient use of the construction material. In present study, discussed main conception of plate heat exchanger and applied in vacuum. PHE and aimed apply in the fresh water generator which installed in ship to desalinate seawater to fresh water use heat from engines. The experiment is proceeded to investigate the heat transfer between cold and hot fluid stream at different flow rate and supply temperature of hot fluid. Generated fresh water as outcome of the system. PHE is an important part of a condensing or evaporating system. One of common assumptions in basic heat exchanger design theory is that fluid is to be distributed uniformly at the inlet of each fluid side and throughout the core. However, in practice, flow mal-distribution is more common and can significantly reduce the heat exchanger performance. The flow and heat transfer are simulated by the k-$\varepsilon$ standard turbulence model. Moreover, the simulation contacted flow maldistribution in a PHE with 6 channels.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a vacuum pyrolysis system, to analyze bio-oil characteristics, and to examine the applicability for farm-scale capacity. Methods: The biomass was pyrolyzed at 450, 480, and $490^{\circ}C$ on an electric heat plate in a vacuum reactor. The waste heat from the heat exchanger of the reactor was recycled to evaporate water from the bio-oil. The chemical composition of the bio-oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: According to the analysis, the moisture content (MC) in the bio-oil was approximately 9%, the high heating value (HHV) was approximately 26 MJ/kg, and 29 compounds were identified. These 29 compounds consisted of six series of carbohydrates, 17 series of lignins, and six series of resins. Conclusions: Owing to low water content and the oxygen content, the HHV of the bio-oil produced from the vacuum reactor was higher by about 6 MJ/kg than that of the bio-oil produced from a fluidized bed reactor.

  • This paper presented the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for micro plate heat exchanger with straight channel. The metal sheets for straight channel are manufactured by chemical etching and fabricated micro plate heat exchangers by using the vacuum brazing of bonding technology. The performance experiments are performed within the Reynolds numbers range of 15$\sim$250 under the same flow rate conditions for hot and cold sides. The inlet temperature of hot and cold water are conducted in the range of $30^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop are evaluated by the Reynolds numbers and mass flow rates as the inlet temperature variations of the hot and cold sides. Correlations of Nusselt number and friction factor are suggested for micro plate heat exchanger with straight channel using the results of performance experiment.

  • Asperity arrays and Independent asperities were fabricated on a silicon plate. Then pull-off and friction forces were measured on each asperity pattern by using AFM (atomic force microscope) in humid air and high vacuum of $2{\times}10^{-5}$ Pa. The probe of AFM cantilever has a flat square of about $1\;{\mu}m^2$ on its tip. The results showed that the pull-off force was proportional to the curvature radius of asperity peak in each ambient condition. The friction force was proportional to the pull-off force and was slightly higher in the humid air than in the high vacuum.

  • A numerical investigation is made of air flow in a spinner equipment used for cleanning and drying flat display panels. A unique feature of the spinner under question is the placement of a torus plate cover over the rotating plate. The turbulent flow is driven by rotation of a large disk and suction by the exhaust system connected to vacuum chamber. The flow is modelled as an axisymmetric two-dimensional flow and computation is conducted by using the FLUENT package with a version of k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The required capacity of the exhaust system is assessed numerically. The usefulness of the cover in controlling air flow circulation is examined. A computational trouble shooting is attempted to resolve the problem of panel rising which occurred in real experiment.

  • Real time health monitoring system was studied to detect the . generation of defects in the composite structures during service life. The PZT sensors were embedded into the woven-glass/phenol composite plate during the fabrication. VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) process were used to fabricate the composite plate. A Teflon tape was embedded between glass fiber layers to mimic delamination induced during service. Normalized maximum amplitude and energy analyses were used for the acquired signals. Both amplitude and energy of acquired signals were extremely sensitive to the delamination. Therefore, it was successful to detect and to locate the defects in composite plate by monitoring signals from sensors and using the proposed method.
