The most stable adsorption structures and their corresponding energies of 4-pyridone, 4-hydroxypyridine, 2-pyridone and 2-hydroxypyridine have been investigated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation method and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). We confirmed that between the two reaction centers of 4- and 2-pyridone, only O atom of carbonyl functional group can act as a Lewis base and thus, O dative bonding structure is the most stable. On the other hand, we clarified that both the two reaction centers (the cyclic N atom and the O atom of hydroxyl functional group) of 4- and 2-hydroxypyridine (tautomers of 4- and 2-pyridone) can successfully function as a Lewis base. Through the interpretation of the N 1s and O 1s core level spectra obtained using HRPES, we could confirm the electronic structures and bonding configurations of these molecules with a coverage dependence on the Ge(100) surface.
The moisture sorption isotherms of vacuum-dried edible green alga (Capsosiphon fulvescens) powders were determined at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$ and water activity ($a_w$) in the range of 0.11~0.94. An inversion effect of temperature was found at high water activity (>0.75). Various mathematical models were fitted to the experimental data, and Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller model was found to be the most suitable model describing the relationship between equilibrium moisture content and water activity (<0.45). Henderson model could also provide excellent agreement between the experimental and predicted values despite of the intersection point. Net isosteric heat of adsorption decreased from 15.77 to 9.08 kJ/mol with an increase in equilibrium moisture content from 0.055 to $0.090kg\;H_2O/kg$ solids. The isokinetic temperature ($T_{\beta}$) was 434.79 K, at which all the adsorption reactions took place at the same rate. The enthalpy-entropy compensation suggested that the mechanism of the adsorption process was shown to be enthalpy-driven.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have long been reported as an ideal material due to their excellent electrical conductivity and chemical and mechanical stability as well as their high aspect ratios for field emission devices. CNT emitters made by screen printing the organic binder-based CNT paste may act as a source to release gases inside a vacuum panel. These residual gases may cause a catastrophic damage by electrical arcing or ion bombardment to the vacuum microelectronic devices and may change their physical or electrical properties by adsorbing on the CNT emitter surface. In this study, we analyzed the composition of residual gases inside the vacuum-sealed panel by residual gas analyzer (RGA), investigating the effects of individual gases of different kinds at several pressures on the field emission characteristics of CNT emitters. The residual gases included $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2O$, $C_2H_6$, and Ar. Effect of residual gases on the field emission was studied by observing the variation of the pulse voltages with the duty ratio of3.3% to keep the constant emission current of $28{\mu}A$. Each gas species was introduced to a vacuum chamber up to three different pressures ($5\times10^{-7}$, $5\times10^{-6}$, and $5\times10^{-5}$ torr) each for 1 h while electron emission was continued. The three different pressure regions were separated by keeping a high vacuum of $\sim10^{-8}$ torr for a 1 h. The emission was terminated 6 h after the third gas exposure was completed. Field emission characteristics under residual gases will be discussed in terms of their adsorption and desorption on the surface of CNTs and the resultant change of work function.
In this study, in contrast with cases in which Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) tip-induced reactions were instigated by the tunneling electrons, the local electric field, or the mechanical force between a tip and a surface, we found that the tungsten oxide (WO3) covered tungsten (W) tip of a STM acted as a chemical catalyst for the S-H dissociative adsorption of phenylthiol and 1-octanethiol onto a Ge(100) surface. By varying the distance between the tip and the surface, the degree of the tip-catalyzed adsorption could be controlled. We have found that the thiol head-group is the critical functional group for this catalysis and the catalytic material is the WO3 layer of the tip. After removing the WO3 layer by field emission treatment, the catalytic activity of the tip has been lost. 3-mercapto isobutyric acid is a chiral bi-functional molecule which has two functional groups, carboxylic acid group and thiol group, at each end. 3-Mercapto Isobutyric Acid adsorbs at Ge(100) surface only through carboxylic acid group at room temperature and this adsorption was enhanced by the tunneling electrons between a STM tip and the surface. Using this enhancement, it is possible to make thiol group-terminated surface where we desire. On the other hand, surprisingly, the WO3 covered W tip of STM was found to act as a chemical catalyst to catalyze the adsorption of 3-mercapto isobutyric acid through thiol group at Ge(100) surface. Using this catalysis, it is possible to make carboxylic acid group-terminated surface where we want. This functional group-selective adsorption of bi-functional molecule using the catalysis may be used in positive lithographic methods to produce semiconductor substrate which is terminated by desired functional groups.
The Adsorption structures of phenylalanine on Ge(100) surface have been investigated as a function of coverage using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and density functional (DFT) calculation. To converge these experimental and theoretical conclusion, we systematically performed HRCLPES measurements and DFT calculation for various coverage in the adsorption structures of phenylalanine molecules on the Ge(100) surface. In this study, we found two different adsorption structure as a function of coverage in phenylalanine on Ge(100), monitoring three core level spectra (Ge 3d, C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s) using HRPES Through analysis of the binding energies, we confirmed that O-H dissociated and N dative-bonded structure emerges at low coverage (0.10 ML), which is the same to the result of glycine and alanine on Ge(100) system, whereas O-H dissociation structure also appears at higher coverage. Moreover, we observed the shape of phenyl group being included in phenylalanine is changed from flat to tilting structure at final state using DFT calculation. Through the spectral analysis for phenylalanine, we will demonstrate variation of coverage dependent structural change for phenylalanine on Ge(100) surface using experimental (HRPES) and theoretical studies (DFT calculation).
Using a density functional theory calculation including van der Waals (vdW) corrections, we report that $H_2$ adsorption in a cubic-crystalline microporous metal-organic framework (MOF-5) leads to volume shrinkage, which is in contrast to the intuition that gas adsorption in a confined system (e.g., pores in a material) increases the internal pressure and then leads to volumetric expansion. This extraordinary phenomenon is closely related to the vdW interactions between MOF and $H_2$ along with the $H_2$-$H_2$ interaction, rather than the Madelung-type electrostatic interaction. At low temperatures, $H_2$ molecules adsorbed in the MOF-5 form highly symmetrical interlinked nanocages that change from a cube-like shape to a sphere-like shape with $H_2$ loading, helping to exert centrosymmetric forces and hydrostatic (volumetric) stresses from the collection of dispersive interactions. The generated internal negative stress is sufficient to overcome the stiffness of the MOF-5 which is a soft material with a low bulk modulus (15.54 GPa).
In the present work, $TiO_2$ fiilms supported by porous silica gel with high surface area synthesized by atomic layer deposition(ALD). Porous structure of silica substrate could be maintained even after deposit large amount of $TiO_2$ (500 cycles of ALD process), suggesting the differential growth mode of $TiO_2$ on top surface and inside the pore. All the $TiO_2$-covered silica samples showed improved MB adsorption abilities, comparing to bare one. In addition, when silica surface was covered with $TiO_2$ films, MB adsorption capacity was almost fully recovered by re-annealing process (500$^{\circ}C$, for 1 hr, in ambient pressure), whereas MB adsorption capacity of bare silica was decreased after re-heaing process. FT-IR study demonstrated that $TiO_2$ film could prevent deposition of surface-bound intermediate species during thermal decomposition of adsorbed MB molecules. Photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$/silica sample was also investigated.
The adsorption configurations of S-proline on Ge(100) were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and high-resolution core-level photoemission spectroscopy (HRCLPES). We identified three adsorption structures of S-proline on Ge(100) through analysis of the STM images, DFT calculations, and HRCLPES results: (i) an 'intrarow O - H dissociated and N dative bonded structure', (ii) an 'O - H dissociation structure', and (iii) an 'N dative bonded structure'. Moreover, because adsorption through the N atom of S-proline produces a new chiral center due to symmetry reduction by N dative bonding, the adsorption configurations have either (R,S) or (S,S) chirality, yielding an (R,S)-'intrarow O - H dissociated and N dative bonded structure' and an (R,S)-'N dative bonded structure', with a preference for reaction at the Re face. This work presents a novel method for generating stereoselective attachment using S-proline molecules adsorbed onto a Ge(100) surface.
Manufacturing process of OLED contains adsorption-desorption process of glass substrate. There are several adsorption methods of glass substrate such as atmospheric pressure, vacuum and electrostatic adsorption. However, these methods are very complex to connect system. Therefore, the adsorption method using silicone rubber based sticking chuck was proposed in this study. Three types of silicone rubbers having 0, 19.3 and 32.2 wt% of fluorine were used and their mechanical properties, surface energies and adsorption properties were examined. According to the results ${\sigma}_{300}$ and hardness increased with increasing fluorine contents, but elongation was decreased. Also, fluorosilicone rubber containing 32.2 wt% of fluorine showed the lowest surface tension, among three types of rubber and resulted in the highest initial tack with glass substrate. After the adsorption-desorption test of 300,000 cycles was performed, the adsorption force of S-1 (silicone rubber) decreased largely from 2.34 to 0.73 MPa. However, the S-3 (fluorosilicone rubber having 32.2 wt%. of fluorine) decreased only from 3.15 to 2.24 MPa. From this study, we obtained the valuable equations related to long term durability of silicone based sticking chuck. Finally the transfer of silicone rubber to glass substrate with the adsorption-desorption process was not occurred and this phenomenon was examined by UV-Visible spectroscopy.
