  • VOD(Video On Demand) that provides streaming service according to the user's requirement in real time, consists of the video streaming server and the client system. Since it is very hard to apply the traditional server-client model that a server communicates with many clients through 1:1 connection to VOD system because it requires very high network bandwidth, many researches have been done to address this problem. Batching technique is one of VOD system based on Multicast that requires very small network bandwidth. However, the batching based VOD system has a limitation that it is very hard to provide VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) ability. In this paper, we propose a technique that reduces the required network bandwidth to provide VCR function by using the characteristic of MPEG, one of international video compression standard. In the proposed technique, a new video stream for VCR function is constructed with I pictures that is able to be decoded independently. The new video stream for VCR function is transmitted with the video stream for normal play together in Batching manner. The performance evaluation result shows that the proposed technique not only reduces the required network bandwidth and memory usage but also decreases the CPU usages.

  • 본 논문은 VOD 서버에서 자원 활용 및 서비스 상황에 따라 융통성 있게 버퍼공유 크기를 변경함으로써 버퍼공유 효과를 높이면서 시스템 성능을 향상시켜 다수의 사용자들의 요구를 수용할 수 있는 버퍼공유 기법을 제안하다. 공유쌍이 버퍼를 모두 선점하여 더 이상의 새로운 서비스가 불가능한 경우 여분의 디스크 대역폭이 존재한다면 기존 서비스에 아무런 영향 없이 공유쌍을 분리시켜 새로운 서비스를 제공하도록 한다.

A Proposal for a True VOD Service Combining Patching with a Data Segmented NVOD (데이터 분할방식의 NVOD에 패칭을 결합한 참 VOD 서비스의 제안)

  • The patching technique has been used for removing initial waiting time of NVOD. The technique was applicable only to time segmented NVOD services. However, data segmented NVOD methods have been known to have less initial waiting time or use less server's bandwidths than the time segmented NVODs. Therefore, we expect that if patching is applied to a data segmented NVOD, a more efficient NVOD service will be possible. But there has not been such approach. In this paper, we propose a new VOD scheduling algorithm that combines the patching technique with a data segmented NVOD, thus it uses less server's bandwidths and removes initial waiting time, hence makes a true VOD service possible. The proposed technique also absorbs the storage overhead necessary for client buffering incurred by patching into the data segmentation policy of the NVOD scheduling, hence does not need any extra overhead of the client's resource. Therefore, it is also applicable to the case that the client has resource limits.

  • It is generally recognized that Video On Demand (VOD) service will become a promising interactive service in the emerging broadband integrated services digital networks. A centralized VOD system, all programs are stored in a single VOD server which is linked to each user via exchanges, is applicable when a small number of users enjoys the VOD service. However, in case of large service penetration, it is very important to solve the problems of bandwidth and load concentrating in the central video server(CVS) and program transmission network. In this paper, the architecture of the video distribution service network is studied, then a traffic characteristics and models for VOD system are established, and proposed program allocation method to video servers. For this purpose, we present an analysis of program storage amount in each LVS(Local Video Server), transmission traffic volume between LVSs, and link traffic volume between CVS and LVSs, according to changing the related factors such as demand, the number of LVS, vision probability, etc. A method for finding out storage capacity in LVSs is also presented on the basis of the tradeoffs among program storage cost, link traffic cost, and transmission cost.

  • This paper proposes and implements consistency algorithm that is serviced streaming data efficiently in VOD system. The media data is loaded into each node by Round Robin method. The barrier mechanism is changed into the minimum data factor(SH. GOP) of media data in this paper. In addition in order to fast media data service, the additional features are implemented in the consistency algorithm. Additional feature of the consistency algorithm is added. First, time synchronization algorithm is added the suggested consistency algorithm. Second, the prepaging mechanism supports efficient buffering service. I experimented the suggested consistency algorithm on two DSM systems.

  • VOD나 영상회의 등과 같은 실시간 서비스를 이용하는 사용자가 급속도로 증가함에 따라 QoS 보장이라는 새로운 요구사항이 등장하였지만 현재 인터넷의 Best-effort 방법으로는 QoS 보장을 완전히 지원하지 않고 있다. 이를 해결하기 위한 방법에는 망 차원의 QoS 아키텍처 이외에도 사용자가 원하는 QoS 보장을 위한 애플리케이션 레벨 QoS 정의와 DiffServ와 같은 새로운 망에서의 QoS 지원을 위한 체계적 정보가 필요하며 이러한 정보를 저장하고 관리할 실시간 서비스에 맞는 정보 저장소가 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 대표적인 실시간 서비스인 VOD 서비스의 QoS 보장을 위해 필요한 정보들을 추출하여 디렉토리 객체로 정의하고, 효율적인 탐색이 가능한 확장된 디렉토리 시스템을 설계한다. LEAP(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)을 이용하여 정보를 액세스하는 디렉토리 시스템은 저장소의 물리적 위치에 대한 제약 없이 정보의 분산 및 접근을 용이하게 하며, 논리적인 트리 구조에 따르는 빠른 검색을 가능하게 한다.

Study on the Relationship between the Pay TV Subscriber's Genre Preference and VOD Purchase : Focusing on the Movie VOD of IPTV Service (<유료 방송 가입자의 장르 선호도와 VOD 구매의 관계에 관한 연구:IPTV 영화 VOD 이용을 중심으로>)

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the Pay TV subscriber's genre preference and VOD purchase by analyzing actual purchase data of movie VOD of IPTV subscribers for 8 months. The result shows as follows. First, in case of purchasing movie contents below 4000 won, user's genre preference was higher than that of using contents over 4,000 won. This means the subscribers tend to follow their genre preference when the mass-typed recommendation is limited. Second, those who purchase foreign contents show higher genre preference than those who purchase domestic movies. Third, subscribers who purchase more frequently and much more tend to use more diverse genres. Heavy users or those who have higher willingness to pay would consume more diverse contents. It implies that VOD use would increase by supplying the personal recommendation service based on the subscriber's genre preference.

  • In this paper, a VOD(Video -on-Demand) system is implemented using LAN(Local Area Network). The use of LAN causes the time-delay problem due to its narrow channel limitation, as a result, the service using the conventional LAN used not to be popular. In this paper, to solve these problems, we develop the modified topology, the selection methodology of the network equipment, and the dedicated(improved) protocol. Consequently, we can serve at most 3 or 4 clients at the same time, and we conclude it is necessary to optimize the network buffer size depending on the size of video data.

  • VOD 시스템이 상업적으로 성공하기 위해서는 많은 사용자에게 우수한 질의 다양한 컨텐츠를 스트리밍 서비스하는 것이 중요하다. 최근 대규모의 사용자와 사용자들의 다양한 요구를 만족시키기 위하여 클러스터 서버 환경에서의 VOD 시스템이 연구되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이질적인 클라이언트 플랫폼 사용자들의 모든 요청을 지원하기 위한 통합 VOD 시스템을 제안한다. 제안된 시스템은 고화질의 WMV 미디어와 표준 수준의 미디어들에 대한 스트리밍 서비스를 제공한다. 또한, 무선 네트워크 환경의 사용자들을 위한 네트워크 적응적 스트리밍 미디어 서비스를 제공하기위한 방안을 제시한다.
