  • Vehicle detector system based on image processing technology is a significant domain of ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) applications due to its advantages such as low installation cost and it does not obstruct traffic during the installation of vehicle detection systems on the road[1]. In this paper, we propose architecture for vehicle detection by using image processing. The architecture consists of two main parts such as an image processing part, using high speed FPGA, decision and calculation part using CPU. The CPU part takes care of total system control and synthetic decision of vehicle detection. The FPGA part assumes charge of input and output image using video encoder and decoder, image classification and image memory control.

  • In video compression standards, the entropy coding is essential to the high performance compression because redundancy of data symbols is removed. Binary arithmetic coding is one of high performance entropy coding methods. However, the dependency between consecutive binary symbols prevents improving the throughput. For the throughput enhancement, a new probability model is proposed for encoding multi-symbols at one time. In the proposed method, multi-symbol encoder is implemented with only adders and shifters, and the multiplication table for interval subdivision of binary arithmetic coding is removed. Compared to the compression ratio of CABAC of H.264/AVC, the performance degradation on average is only 1.4% which is negligible.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) enables significantly improved compression performance relative to existing standards. However, the advance also requires high computational complexity. To accelerate the intra prediction mode decision, a minimum risk Bayesian classification framework is introduced. The classifier selects a small number of candidate modes to be evaluated by a rate-distortion optimization process using the sum of absolute Hadamard transformed difference (SATD). Moreover, the proposed method provides a loss factor that is a good trade-off model between computational complexity and coding efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a 31.54% average reduction in the encoding run time with a negligible coding loss of 0.93% BD-rate relative to HEVC test model 16.6 for the Intra_Main common test condition.

  • Image coloration refers to adding plausible colors to a grayscale image or video. Image coloration has been used in many modern fields, including restoring old photographs, as well as reducing the time spent painting cartoons. In this paper, a method is proposed for colorizing grayscale images using a convolutional neural network. We propose an encoder-decoder model, adapting FusionNet to our purpose. A proper loss function is defined instead of the MSE loss function to suit the purpose of coloring. The proposed model was verified using the ImageNet dataset. We quantitatively compared several colorization models with ours, using the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) metric. In addition, to qualitatively evaluate the results, our model was applied to images in the test dataset and compared to images applied to various other models. Finally, we applied our model to a selection of old black and white photographs.

  • Video-based Point Cloud Compression(V-PCC)

  • Because the H.264/AVC standard adopts the variable length coding algorithm, the rate of encoded video bitstream fluctuates a lot as time flows, though its compression efficiency is superior to that of existing standards. When a video is transmitted in real-time over networks with fixed low-bandwidth, it is necessary to control the bit rate which is generated from encoder. Many existing rate control algorithms have been adopting the quadratic rate-distortion model which determines the target bits for each frame. We propose a new rate control algorithm for H.264/AVC video transmission over networks with fixed bandwidth. The proposed algorithm predicts quantization parameter adaptively to reduce video distortion using the quadratic rate-distortion model, which uses the target bit rate and the mean absolute difference for current frame considering pixel difference between macroblocks in the previous and the current frame. On video samples with high motion and scene change cases, experimental results show that (1) the proposed algorithm adapts the encoded bitstream to limited channel capacity, while existing algorithms abruptly excess the limit bit rate; (2) the proposed algorithm improves picture quality with $0.4{\sim}0.9dB$ in average.

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC), a next-generation video coding standard that is in the final stage of standardization, has adopted various techniques to achieve more than twice the compression performance of HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding). VVC adopted Bi-prediction with CU-level Weight (BCW), which generates the final prediction signal with the weighted combination of bi-predictions with various weights, to enhance the performance of the bi-predictive inter prediction. The syntax element of the BCW index is adaptively coded according to the value of NoBackwardPredFlag which indicates if there is no future picture in the display order among the reference pictures. Such syntax structure for signaling the BCW index could violate the flexibility of video codec and cause the dependency issue at the stage of bitstream parsing. To address these issues, this paper proposes an efficient BCW weight signaling method which enables all weights and parsing without any condition check. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated with various weight searching methods in the encoder. The experimental results show that the proposed method gives negligible BD-rate losses and minor gains for 3 weights searching and 5 weights searching, respectively, while resolving the issues.

  • In this paper, we propose a distributed multi-view video coding method employing illumination compensation for multi-view video coding. Distributed multi-view video coding (DMVC) methods can be classified either into a temporal or an inter-view interpolation-based ones according to ways to generate side information. DMVC with inter-view interpolation utilizes characteristics of multi-view videos to improve coding efficiency of the DMVC by using side information based on the inter-view interpolation. However, mismatch of camera parameters and illumination change between two views could bring about inaccurate side information generation. In this paper, a modified distributed multi-view coding method is presented by applying illumination compensation in generating the side information. In the proposed encoder system, in addition to parity bits for AC coefficients, DC coefficients are transmitted as well to the decoder side. By doing so, the decoder can generate more accurate side information by compensating illumination changes with the transmitted DC coefficients. We found that the proposed algorithm is $0.1{\sim}0.2\;dB$ better than the conventional algorithm that does not make use of illumination compensation.

  • The RDO (Rate Distortion Optimization) process of HEVC results in good coding efficiency, but relatively requires much encoding time. In order to reduce the encoding time of RDO process, this paper proposes a method of fast intra prediction mode decision using DCT coefficients distributions and the existence of DCT coefficients. The proposed fast Intra coding sets the number of intra prediction mode candidates to three(3) from the RMD (Rough Mode Decision) process in HM16.0 reference SW and reduces the number of candidates one more time by investigating DCT coefficients distribution. After that, if there exists a quantized DCT block having all zero coefficient values for a specific candidate before the RDO process, the candidate is chosen without the RDO process. The proposed method reduces the encoder complexity on average 46%, while the coding efficiency is 2.1% decreased compared with the HEVC encoder.

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264 standard uses new coding tools such as VBS, 1/4-pel accurate ME, multiple references, intra prediction, loop filter, etc. Using these coding tools, H.264 has achieved significant improvements from rate-distortion point of view compared to existing standards. However, the encoder complexity is greatly increased due to these coding tools. We focus on the complexity reduction method of MB mode selection. Among all modes which can be selected, $8{\times}8$ and intra $4{\times}4$ mode have higher complexity than the others. So we propose the methods for reduction of the $8{\times}8$ and intra $4{\times}4$ mode complexity by using information of other modes with relatively low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed methods save up to $54.6{\%}$ of total encoding time while keeping the average decrease about 0.012dB in PSNR.
