On Listening, Reflection and Meditation in Vedānta (베단따의 '듣기·숙고하기·명상하기'(문·사·수)에 관하여)

  • The three means of listening, reflection and meditation (${\acute{s}}raava{\d{n}}a$, manana and $nididhy{\bar{a}}sana$) which are central devices of practice in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ philosophy should be understood not as a continuative step but as a methodological extension on condition of having one and the same purpose. In other words, the three means should be interpreted in a listening-oriented manner, in which the process has to be methodologically extended to reflection and meditation only when the direct knowledge on the reality is not gained in listening. This kind of interpretation can be more justified by displaying significant characteristics of Indian philosophy implied in the three means. It can be easily said that $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ belonging to the liberation-centric tradition is a project of 'regaining essential self' through which the self becomes essential self by knowing that self. In this case the listening-oriented interpretation coincides with the basic teachings of $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$, since listening alone can be a sufficient means for obtaining knowledge of the original self. Further, as the project of 'regaining essential self' is carried out by the three means, these can be called a sort of 'event' that is carried out according to the scenario of $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ metaphysics. In this case listening is a course of comprehending the scenario of event participated by oneself, and that participant can accomplish the project by way of listening the scenario alone judged as somewhat more effective for liberation. However, in the later $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ there arises a meditation-oriented interpretation of which three means are regarded not as a methodological extension but as a continuative step, because of the emphasis on meditation under the lasting influence of other philosophical systems. This is a result of epistemic desire that tries to convert what is heard to what is specially perceived or what is given to what is accepted. It may be said that this interpretation emphasizing the phased transition from the indirect to the direct of knowledge is an attempt to rationalize the repetitive delay of event as the actual failure of project. Furthermore, an assertion of the later $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ which refers the fourth means called $sam{\bar{a}}dhi$ is based on the logic that the self-realization is possible apart from and outside the text, and accordingly it is incompatible with an assertion of the early $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ that the self-realization is a reproduction as it is of the scenario guided by the absolute text. After all, the standard interpretation on the three means in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ have to be the listening-oriented, but not be the meditation-oriented or the $sam{\bar{a}}dhi$-oriented.

Rotational Viscoelastic Dampers for the Mitigation of Wind Loads on Transmission Tower Transferred from Transmission Lines (송전선에 의해 송전철탑에 전달되는 풍하중 저감을 위한 회전형 점탄성감쇠기)

  • In this study, wind loads transmitted to a transmission tower from transmission lines are mitigated using rotational viscoelastic dampers. First, the wind load characteristics in a transmission tower is investigated considering the effect of the transmission lines through stochastic analysis. The assemblage of the transmission line and insulator are modeled as a double pendulum system connected to the SDOF model of the tower. From the result of the stochastic analysis, the background component of the overturing moment caused by the wind loads acting on the transmission lines are found to have considerable portion in the total overturning moment. Based on this observation result, a strategy Installing rotational viscoelastic damper (VED) between tower arm and transmission line is proposed for the mitigation of the transmission line reactions, which play a role as dynamic loads on a transmission tower. For the purpose of verification, time history analysis is conducted for different wind velocities and VED parameters. The analysis result shows that the rotational VED is effective for the mitigation of the background component rather than the resonance component of the transmission line reactions and achieves the reduction ratio of 50% even for higher wind speed.

Human Goal in Advaita Vedānta (아드와이따 베단따와 인간의 목표)

  • In (Advaita) $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ although human beings are destined to have a pessimistic starting point in life, their goal of life is to become a Perfect Being which is called 'Liberation' (mokṣa) by self-transcendence. This human goal together with several means are accepted by $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ as solely valuable thing in the life. In this way there must be a self-recognition of his own value in the process of Liberation, through which one recognizes his own true nature i.e. ${\bar{A}}tman$. ${\bar{A}}tman$ is clearly defined to be 'Existence, Consciousness, Bliss' (Being, Illumination, Good), and this definition is made with the view of revealing that It is ultimate foundation and source of human beings ontologically, epistemologically and axiologically. However, as $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$points of view on human goal are not without critical limitations, it may be necessary to revaluate 'the process of self-inquiry' devised to achieve human goal. Inquiry is, first of all, an accepting process of what is given in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ as the scenario that gives rise to most actual result, then, a performing and verifying process of that scenario in one's own experience consistently. In this process, a shift of action from worldly life to unworldly life is what is called 'self-adjustment', a removal of 'the self in excess' through knowledge of the real Self is what is called 'simplification of the self', and at the end of simplification a state of ultimate Self is 'Liberation'. Therefore, the inquiry of $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ into human goal can be summarized as following formula; 'good action = self-adjustment' ${\rightarrow}$ 'good knowledge = simplification of the self' ${\rightarrow}$ 'Liberation = ultimate Self'.

A Vedāntic Perspective on Philosophy for Old Age (노년 철학에 관한 베단따의 전망)

  • This article aims to examine the possibility of 'philosophy for old age' when humanity begins to reflect on old age in earnest as our country shifts to the aged society. In particular, this article aims to reframe $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy, i.e. a beacon of Hindu philosophy as a model of philosophy for old age, on the assumption that liberation-oriented Hindu philosophies in India can be the most suitable model to frame and apply philosophy for old age mainly at the individual level. First of all, this article identifies that liberation-oriented Hindu philosophies are nothing but a philosophy for the later part of one's life, that is, a philosophy for old age, showing that their common thoughts are very similar to the characteristics of old age. Then, it proves that three points of $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy, i.e. spirit supremacy, the world as an illusion, and freedom from all relations, are fully compatible with philosophy for old age. Finally, it argues that the tradition of Hindu saṃnyāsin (wonderer) embodied to the extreme in $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy is to establish 'old age for philosophy' beyond 'philosophy for old age.' Because $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy establishes saṃnyāsin of old age, which is optimized to strive for the truth as the confident subject of philosophical inquiry, so much that it exists more 'by old age' than 'for old age.' After all, according to $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ philosophy, as ontological and practical positivity is maximized in old age, so old age itself can be the best position to overcome not 'negativity of old age', but 'negativity of human condition' or 'negativity of life.'

Return of Self-identity and Story of the Other which disappeared in Advaita Vedanta (아드와이따 베단따의 자아정체성 귀환과 사라진 타자의 이야기)

  • The most important vocabulary in Advaita $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$, which is anthropology and soteriology on the self, is of course '${\bar{a}}tman$' or 'the self', to which '$an{\bar{a}}tman$' or 'the other' is in opposition. As $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ system revolves around the concept ${\bar{a}}tman$, it can be compared favorably with 'final vocabulary' of Richard Rorty. Moreover, $Ved{\bar{a}}ntic$ system can be termed as 'a return of self-identity', in which a process of returning is from a deceived self to the true and original self. After all, story of '$an{\bar{a}}tman$' or 'the other' in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ seems to have no significance at all. However, discourse about the other can also lead a something fruitful. There are such doctrines in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ that support a procedure of self-realization not according to the Hegelian dialectic but to the transposition and continuous antagonism between the self and the other, as a special meaning of viveka (discrimination) that fixes a boundary between the self and the other, a destruction of falsehood that is more important than establishment of truthfulness, a transposition of the true and the false before and after self-realization. Thus the other is not disappeared but only hidden, even after accomplishing its own methodological role, and the same is with discourse about the other. To revive forgotten vocabulary in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ is an attempt to reconstruct devaluated story by means of shifting the pivot of discourse from the self to the other. The essential thing in this attempt may be to revive the conceptions of 'effort' that is intently concealed and of 'self-inquiry' that has lost its true meaning. Out of these, a systematic and continuous self-inquiry, consists in having a scenario on the question 'Who am I?' and utilizing that scenario by experience without interruption. A work of reconstructing the lost narratives in $Ved{\bar{a}}nta$ can be feasible only when the history of self-inquiry is redescribed in the system itself, provided that object of inquiry is not 'a self as the self' but 'a self as the other'.

Data-driven Approach to Explore the Contribution of Process Parameters for Laser Powder Bed Fusion of a Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

  • In order to predict the process window of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) for printing metallic components, the calculation of volumetric energy density (VED) has been widely calculated for controlling process parameters. However, because it is assumed that the process parameters contribute equally to heat input, the VED still has limitation for predicting the process window of LPBF-processed materials. In this study, an explainable machine learning (xML) approach was adopted to predict and understand the contribution of each process parameter to defect evolution in Ti alloys in the LPBF process. Various ML models were trained, and the Shapley additive explanation method was adopted to quantify the importance of each process parameter. This study can offer effective guidelines for fine-tuning process parameters to fabricate high-quality products using LPBF.

  • Many researchers have studied several vibration control devices such as TMD, TLD, and VED to reduce the acceleration level for tall buildings. Advantages of TLD (tuned liquid damper) include easy installation, low cost, and less maintenance. However, the dynamic characteristics of TLD must be verified by experiment and analysis due to the difficulties in evaluating the characteristics of water sloshing. In this study, free vibration and dynamic excitation experiments of structure with TLD were conducted to verify vibration control force of the proposed TLD for high-rise building. The parameters were mass ratio of water to structure, number of damping nets, and aspect ratio. From the test results, the responses of structure with water tank were observed to be smaller than those of structure alone. Furthermore, better damping effect could be achieved with larger mass ratio, more damping nets, and larger aspect ratio. However, in the case of water tank with no damping net, little damping effect was obtained.

  • In this paper, comparing and analyzing the distribution of High brightness as domestic lamps and Japanese products go thinner and lighter, we setting an effective composition standard. By comparing and analyzing the feature, brightness, chromaticity and uniformity of domestic LGPs and Japanese products, early home-manufacturing and stabilization in home-manufacturing are possible. By comparing and analyzing the distribution of brightness as sariheets are ved, we can design an ideal sheet composition.

  • Electrical conduction characteristics of Polyethylene/Ethylene vinyl acetate blends of varing vinyl acetate content(1% and 4%) were investigated at electric fields ranging from 10$\^$6/ to 10.$\^$8/ V/cm over the temperature range of 30 and 85$^{\circ}C$. It was obser-ved that the extent of current density was changed at the blends and the rate of change of current den-sity was slightly suppressed at high field range, but PE and EVA were not shown. The change of con-duction characteristics and a suppression in rate of change of current density were attributed to the VA content in PE.EVA blends.

  • In this study, heat transfer characteristics of vertical fixed bed with air flowing through were experimentally investigated. The experiments were conducted for cases where heat was transfer steady state conditions from an immersed cylindrical heated to the surrounding fixed ved of steel balls. Based on the experimental data, the optimum conditions for heat transfer augmentation have been determined and shows in empirical forms. For the same power loss, comparison of heat transfer effect between the fixed bed and single phase forced convection device indicates that both miniaturization of heat exchange device and heat transfer augmentation at low flow velocity are possible by application of the fixed bed to heat exchangers. The present results could provide a useful design information for the heat exchangers where fixed beds are used.
