  • Design VE system in order to promote the economical efficiency and the functional elevation of construction facilities apply to conatruction over 10 billion from december 2005. But it don't achieve purpose of VE original to maximization of value creation through VE because VE perform formal and result center. This study suggests some idea and analyse implementation of design VE through design VE case of turnkey and alternative project performed in domestic.

  • Construction VE is the system introduced in order to reduce the life cycle cost and promote the performance of construction facilities, used in architecture and civil construction since apply to construction over 10 billion from december 2005. But yet it is short of VE specialist and it is not a purpose in maximization of value creation through VE but strong better awareness of tool for budget reduce. This study tries to contribute to qualitative advance of design VE by analyze substantial degree of VE Procedure and VE result by Job Plan used widely in domestic an object design VE competition case to crossroad.

  • Construction value engineering(VE) is often performed in the form of a short term review of designs, rather than during a regular workshop with a standardized work plan, and its application method is limited. Thus, tasks are performed by applying the method in reverse depending on the VE results, and function analysis, a key VE method, is omitted or only applied for the sake of formality. In addition, it is hard to expect great results from VE because of insufficient time and budget allowed to perform VE and a lack of understanding of VE procedures and methods. In particular, the methods used to store and reuse the tremendous amount of ideas and information created during the process of VE implementation is not systematic. Even the Korea Expressway Corporation, which has produced relatively systematic VE performance compared to other institutions, has had the above-mentioned problems. Therefore, this study aims to improve existing VE processes and suggest a method to efficiently store and retrieve VE information by analyzing the limitations of construction VE practice and the characteristics of VE for highway facilities as part of improving design VE performance.

  • Value Engineering(VE) Workshop executes many tasks with VE team members from various experts of construction field on the basis of VE Job Plan for a short period of time. However, the VE team members are not useful with using VE information until now because it is not systematic in the accumulation and application of VE information. Especially, these problems constitute the obstacles to communication, reliability and quickness of VE information. It also causes an increase of time and cost at VE Workshop. Therefore, the results of this study suggests the conceptual model of Web-Based Information System for VE(WISE) in order to improve the effectiveness of VE Workshop and solve the problem as is stated above.

Consecutive Design VE Process Emphasized on Follow-up Activities (Follow-up 활동을 강조한 연속적 설계VE 프로세스)

  • Design Value Engineering (VE) has become an import part of the daily design process since it has been introduced in the construction industry. Design VE is usually conducted in the general and execution design stages respectively. In order to increase the effectiveness of the VE process, the outcome from the general design VE activities should be integrated into execution design. The outcome from the execution design should be used again for construction. In this study, a consecutive VE process model has been presented as a way to improve the current practice of design VE activities in the construction industry. In the presented model, follow-up activities are emphasized to increase values from the life-cycle perspective of a construction project. The model was tested in a case study of an actual design VE process. The result of the study demonstrates that the model can: 1) effectively incorporate owners requirements; 2) assist decision making in selecting better construction; 3) increase the interface between general and execution design stages; and 4) trace the value flow more efficiently. Overall, the study results indicates that a the consecutive VE process model can be effectively applied when construction project are contracted for the life-cycle management of construction projects.

Implementation Status and Improvement Strategy of the Value Engineering in Domestic Construction Industry (국내 건설VE 운영현황과 발전방향)

  • In the year of 1980 and 2000, the Korean government institutionalized the Value Engineering methodology in the construction phase and the design phase respectively. While design-phase VE have been applied to construction industry actively, which was institutionalized 7 years ago, construction-phase VE have not been applied to industry frequently, although it was institutionalized 25 years ago. On the other hand, at the time of social demands for VE is increasing, it has been pointed out that VE should be compatible with the delivery system. And the time of VE study, the operational management of VE study, and the maintenance process of the result of the VE study also should be considered. In this study, a scheme to improve VE methodology in the construction industry is proposed based on the literature review and the data analysis of domestic and foreign state of VE.

  • It is common that the analysis of VE/LCC is performed in design phase of quay wall structures. The analysis is mainly executed based on experience and engineering sense of expert considering the selection of construction method, construction and maintenance cost. Recently there are increasing demands on the analysis that includes uncertainty and vulnerability of input parameters, for this purpose, fuzzy reliability based probabilistic VE/LCC analysis model for quay wall structures is suggested. In VE/LCC analysis for quay wall structures, the application of probabilistic analysis method give very similar results compare with those of deterministic analysis method. It is anticipated that the methodology proposed in this paper can also be utilized in the design and maintenance phase of other facilities where decision making is made for the probabilistic life cycle cost and value analysis.

  • The value engineering(VE) in construction projects is systematic method which improve quality as well as reduction input cost and as construction VE work extends the range of application, the importance is rising. For this reason studies are needed to enforce design value engineering work systemically and effectively. In this study, we analyzed the problem of the present construction VE processing and deduced the model to be most suitable the work efficiency. As suggested model reflects systemically requirement item of owner and user, it will make approaching direction and standard establishment possible. So it will increase the following function analysis in analyzing step and the effectiveness of creating idea and make successful VE result.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze problems and suggest improvement scheme based on questionnaire survey to design VE status for apartment buildings. For this study, the adapted research methods are case studies of design VE to construction companies and questionnaire survay to design staffs. The results of this study are as follows: 1) In the system aspect, the problems of design VE for apartment buildings are insufficiency of regulation and difficulty of performing design VE actively. In the performance aspect, the problems is absence of design VE procedure suited to apartment buildings. 2) In the system side, the improvements of design VE for apartment buildings include regulatory enlargement of design VE application for apartment buildings and rearrangement of VE incentive system for design staffs. In the performance side, a VE procedure suited to apartment buildings is developed and suggested.
