3D-based BIM(Building Information Modeling) technologies can be utilized effectively as a means of systematic management of facility information for safety assurance and effective maintenance of waterworks facilities. In this study, BIM models of water treatment facilities that can be used as basic data for BIM-based maintenance of waterworks facilities were developed. Information exchange and generality of the developed BIM models were evaluated by conducting interoperability analysis of IFC(Industry Foundation Classes) conversion models. In addition, the application of COBie(Construction Operations Building information exchange) was recommended as an effective countermeasure to deal with technical limitation regarding exchange and utilization of facilities-related information through current IFC models. The results of this study can contribute to the development of BIM-based maintenance system for waterworks facilities.
The procedure and implementation of an simulation based production planning and scheduling system. Production planning and scheduling is important problem in manufacturing field. It is so important for delivery quality as well as productivity, too. In this paper, heuristic production planning and scheduling module for improving delivery quality and productivity will be discussed. Beginning with total demand and initial work in process, the algorithms for production scheduling and planning can efficiently generate a feasible production resources and capacity schedule results in high resource utilization, minimum number of the late orders and reduced labor variability. The algorithm is executed to achieve the best on time delivery performance. The developed heuristic algorithms in the module will be expected to provide the better delivery performance and productivity.
A simulation study was conducted to determine optimum capacity of Navy drydock facility using GASP-IV, an advanced FORTRAN-based simulation language, under demands of regular overhauls and emergency repairs by ships of an hypothetical fleet composition. Three year dock usage data was analyzed to produce probability distributions underlying drydock repair demands. The present facility size of two drydocks was simulated and was found to be somewhat short of adequate service capability, showing excessive average waiting time and average queue length. The simulation model was then modified to include an additional drydock of similar size as the other two and a year's simulation was again conducted. All repair needs were quite satisfactorily met and all docks showed very high utilization factor (0.98). This contributed to an increase in the fleet's ship availability from 0.95 to 0.99. This study illustrates the usefulness of simulation technique as a tool for analyzing policy alternatives in military long-term investment areas.
This paper presents an optimization formulation for resource scheduling in Critical Resource Diagramming (CRD) of production scheduling networks. A CRD network schedules units of resources against points of needs in a production network rather than the conventional approach of scheduling tasks against resource availability. This resource scheduling approach provides more effective tracking of utilization of production resources as they are assigned or 'moved' from one point of need to another. Using CRD, criticality indices can be developed for resource types in a way similar to the criticality of activities in Critical Path Method (CPM). In our supply chain model, upstreams may choose either normal operation or expedited operation in resource scheduling. Their decisions affect downstream's resource scheduling. The suggested optimization formulation models resources as CRD elements in a production two-stage supply to minimize the total operation cost
In this paper, a rule for dispatching operations, named the Most Dissimilar Resources (MDR) dispatching rule is presented. The MDR dispatching rule has been designed to maximize utilization of resources in a resource-constrained job shop with general precedence constraints. In shown that solving the above scheduling problem with the MDR dispatching rule is equivalent to multiple solving of the maximum clique problem. A graph theoretic approach is used to model the latter problem. The pairwise counting heuristic of computational time complexity O(n$^{2}$) is developed to solve the maximum clique problem. An attempt is made to combine the MDR dispatching rule with the existing look-ahead dispatching rules. Computational experience indicates that the combined MDR dispatching rules provide solutions of better quality and consistency than the dispatching rules tested in a resource-constrained job shop.
This paper presents a method for estimating the population variability distribution of the failure parameter (failure rate or failure probability) for each failure mode considered in PSA (Probabilistic Safety Assessment). We focus on the utilization of generic estimates from various industry compendia for the estimation. The estimates are complicated statistics of failure data from plants. When the failure data referred in two or more sources are overlapped, dependency occurs among the estimates provided by the sources. This type of problem is first addressed in this paper. We propose methods based on ML-II estimation in Bayesian framework and discuss the characteristics of the proposed estimators. The proposed methods are easy to apply in real field. Numerical examples are also provided.
In the automobile industry, structural health monitoring of fiber reinforced polymer composite parts is a widespread need for maintenance before breakdown of the functional elements or a complete vehicle. High performance sensors are generally used in many of the structural health monitoring operations. Within this study, a carbon fiber sewing thread has been used as a low cost laminate failure sensing element. The experimentation plan was set up according to the electrical conductance and flexibility of carbon fiber threads, advantages of preforming operations, and sewing mechanisms. The influence of the single thread damages by changing the electrical resistance and monitoring the impact location by using carbon thread sensors has been performed. Innovative utilization of relatively cost-effective carbon threads for monitoring the delamination of metallic inserts from the basic composite laminate structure is a highlighting feature of this study.
Assembly line has been recognized as an efficient production system in mass production. However, the recent production environment characterized as mass customization urges production managers to transform a long assembly line to a number of short assembly cells. To maximize the utilization of resources in an assembly cell, it is important to have the line balanced. This paper presents a bucket brigade-based assembly cell. Bucket brigade is a way of coordinating workers who progressively perform a set of assembly operations on a flow line. Each worker follows a simple rule: perform assembly operations on a product until the next worker downstream takes it over; then go back to the previous worker upstream to take over a new assembly job. In this way, the line balances itself. The bucket brigade assembly cell is analyzed and compared with traditional assembly lines and general assembly cells. The paper also discusses some prerequisite requirements and limitations when the bucket brigade assembly cells are employed.
This paper deals with the application of commercial mobile communication system for improvement of the military mobile wireless communication systems. Currently, commercial mobile communication systems are rapidly growing from first and second Generation system to third and forth Generation system, which can provide multimedia service of high speed and high capacity(e.g., IMT-2000). If we adapt these emerging commercial technology for the military communication, the military will have many benefits in terms of cost saving, early operational deployment and performance. And it is possible to support the communication necessary in the future warfield operational environment. Therefore, we analyzed differences between commercial systems and military systems, and adaptability in terms of security, survivability and performance. Finally, we proposed a stepwise utilization scheme to improve the military mobile wireless communication
