  • The performance of truck haulage operations in an underground mine was evaluated using the time usage model and key performance indicators (KPIs) proposed by Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG). An underground mine that mainly produces iron and titanium iron was selected as a study area, and truck haulage data were collected using Bluetooth beacons and tablet PCs. The collected data were analyzed to identify unit operations, activities, events, and required time of truck haulage operations, and time categories were classified based on the time usage model. The performance of the haulage operations was evaluated using nine indicators in terms of availability, utilization, and effectiveness. As a result, in terms of availability, uptime was 33.9%, physical availability was 95.7%, and mechanical availability was 94.9%. In the case of utilization, use of availability was 83.1%, asset utilization was 28.1%, and operating and effective utilization were 79.6% and 77.7%, respectively. Also, in terms of efficiency, operating efficiency was high at 97.6%, and production effectiveness was found to be 49%.

  • A hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) is a limited and critical resource whose efficient utilization of capacity impacts on both the welfare of patients and the hospital's cost effectiveness. Decisions made in the ICU affect the operations of other departments. Yet, decision making in an ICU tends to be mainly subjective and lacking in clear criteria upon which to base any given decision. The study reviews the capacity utilization of one particular ICU, that of a public hospital in Hong Kong, and develops a computer simulation model to improve both the unit's capacity utilization and the quality of care provided to its patients.

  • In this paper, we presents a systematic methodology for minimizing tardiness and maximizing resource utilization in a multi-plant supply chain. A methodology is represented to a multi-objective mathematical program model. The model offers flexible and efficient multi-plant planning and scheduling. Also, We develope a realistic and flexible planning model using the genetic algorithm to solve the model.

  • To provide basic information for the proper usage of frozen convenience foods in elementary school foodservice operations, 51 dietitian employeed in school foodservices in Inchon were surveyed. Among the frozen convenience foods, dumpling-type foods(60.8%) and processed meats(40.4%)were used widely in school foodservice. Generally, the frequency of using frozen food items was fewer than 1 time per month. More than 15% of respondents were using pork cutlet, chicken, chickenball, dumpling stuffed with meat about 2-3 times per month. Sweet and sour pork(Tangsuyuk), kebap(Sanjuk), fish/shrimp cutlet, fried potato items were used only fewer than 1 time per month. Dietitian's age, carrier, employed status influenced the utilization rate. The grand mean of satisfaction score was 3.36 out of 5. The factors affecting satisfaction in using frozen foods were sanitation, taste, price, nutrition, food additives in order. The major reasons of utilizaing frozen convenience foods were 'improved labor productivity(4.47)' and 'meet customer preference(4.25)'. The limiting factors in using frozen foods were taste(35.3%), price(23.5%), nutrition(17.6%). The management practices of frozen convenience foods through food processing flow were assessed. Average performance rate was 64.7%. To enlarge the usage of frozen convenience foods in foodservice operations, dietitians should observe sanitary practices.

  • We present an early result of a research for formalization of the characteristics and effectiveness of manufacturing performance measurement systems (PMS). Recently manufacturing PMS has been a focus of broad research efforts due to its practical role playing in managers' decision making process. There have been so many suggestive researches that explain the troubles with old cost accounting-based PMS and describe the desirable properties of PMS in strategic management of manufacturing operations. The lack of empirical investigation in this area, however, has left us unsure about what are the real characteristics that distinguish one PMS from another. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework that can be used to describe the environment, in which a specific PMS works, the characteristic and the utilization variables of a PMS. Then we report the result of a field survey, where we found three distinctive characteristics of a PMS, contents, vertical integration, and horizontal integration. Further, we discuss the relationships of the variables with the utilization of PMS, manufacturing strategy, manufacturing improvement programs, and business performance.

  • A completely separated functional FMS (Flexible Manufacturing Systems), or a partly separated functional FMS, should be constructed because a fully functional FMS, where each machine has all of the tools required for procesing various kinds of jobs, is superflous and wasteful in meeting the multiform and changeable demands of comsumers in a flexible manner. The effective methods are presented in this study for allocating the tools to each machine in a two-machine flow shop type FMS to meet the above demands and to maximize the utilization of the FMS. The methods for a completely separated functional FMS having no duplicated tools and a partly separated functional FMS having some duplicated tools are proposed in this paper. Some simulation results clarify that utilization of the FMS by this methods is as high as the fully functional FMS when the number of jobs is large.

  • Since online knowledge networks usually consist of a larger, loosely knit, and geographically distributed group of "strangers" who may not know each other very well, members may not willingly share their knowledge with others. In order to address this challenge, this study looks Into the factors that are expected to affect knowledge sharing in an online knowledge network. For empirical validation, we choose "the global network of Korean scientists and engineers (KOSEN)" as one of the best practices of online knowledge networks. By using the archival, network, and survey data, we validate two models of knowledge sharing in sequence (i.e., knowledge contribution and knowledge utilization models) and then discuss the results. The findings of this study show that individuals not only contribute but also utilize knowledge in an online knowledge network when they are structurally embedded and perceive a strong reciprocity. In the network. In addition, taking pleasure in helping is found to positively affect knowledge contribution, whereas perceiving usefulness is found to Influence knowledge utilization. Contributions of this study and future research opportunities are also discussed.

  • Purpose - An increase in automation has been as a result of digital technologies. The data will be instrumental in the determination of the services that are more necessary so that more resources can be allocated for them. The purpose of the current research is to investigate how big data utilization will help increase the profitability in the industry 4.0 era. Research design, Data, and methodology - The present research has conducted the comprehensive literature content analysis. Quantitative approaches allow respondents to decide, but qualitative methods allow them to offer more information. In the next step, respondents are given data collection equipment, and information is collected. Result - The According to qualitative literature analysis, there are five ways in which big data utilization will help increase the profitability in the industry 4.0 era. The five solutions are (1) Better Customer Insight, (2) Increased Market Intelligence, (3) Smarter Recommendations and Audience Targeting, (4) Data-driven innovation, (5) Improved Business Operations. Conclusion - Modern companies have been seeking a competitive advantage so that they can have the edge over other companies in the same industries providing the same services and products. Big data is that technology that businesses have always wanted for an extended period of time to revolutionize their operations, making their businesses more profitable.
