  • Today\`s first generation shopping agent is limited to comparing merchant offerings usually on price instead of their full range of attributes. Even in the full range comparison, there is not a good model which considers the overall features in the negotiation process. Therefore, the negotiation model needs to be extended to include negotiations over the more attributes. In this paper, we propose a negotiation model in the agent-mediated electronic commerce to negotiate over prices, product features, warranties and service policies based on utility theory and simple heuristics. We will describe a prototype agent-mediated electronic commerce framework called Pmart. This framework provides the software reuse and the extensibility based on the object-oriented technology. It is implemented on Windows-based platforms using Java and CORBA for the network transparency and platform independence.

  • A key issue in the development and application of stated preference nonmarket valuation is the incorporation of unobserved heterogeneity in utility models. Two approaches to this task have dominated. The first is to include individual-specific characteristics into the estimated indirect utility functions. These characteristics are usually socioeconomic or demographic variables. The second employs generalized models such as random parameter logit or probit models to allow model parameters to vary across individuals. This paper examines a third approach: the inclusion of psychological or 'latent' variables such as general attitudes and behaviour-specific attitudes to account for heterogeneity in models of stated preferences. Attitudinal indicators are used as explanatory variables and as segmentation criteria in a choice modelling application. Results show that both the model significance and parameter estimates are influenced by the inclusion of the latent variables, and that attitudinal variables are significant factors for WTP estimates.

  • Purpose: Early diagnosis is the primary method aimed at controlling breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to analyze some factors affecting the performance of mammography screening among women with a family history of breast cancer in Korea. Methods: This study applied a descriptive design method through structured self-report questionnaires. The Care Seeking Behavior Theory provided a theoretical framework for the study. Factors measured in this study represent demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables including anxiety, barriers, utility, habits, perception, and facilitators. A total of 212 participants, of at least 20 years old, were sampled from April 8, 2010 to March 31, 2011. The data was analyzed by logistic regression method using the Statistical Package for the Social Science 18.0 software. Results: Of the 212 participants, 122 women (57.5%) went through mammography screening. The results of the analysis showed that (a) age (Odds Ratio [OR] =1.10, p<.001), (b) facilitating influences (OR=1.83, p=.008), (c) perception of mammography importance (OR=1.92, p=.011), (d) barriers to mammography (OR=0.60, p=.031), and (e) utility of mammography (OR=2.01, p=.050) significantly affect mammography screening. Conclusion: The results underscore the impact that psychosocial variables in obtaining mammography have on adherence to screening. Women with a family history of breast cancer should be given accurate information and recommendation about mammography by healthcare provider and a regular source of healthcare.

  • This paper suggests a methodology for linking technology classification of nongovernmental information security field and technology classification of cyber-warfare in national defense field. Based on this methodology, Multi-Attribute Utility Theory(MAUT) is applied for the purpose of selecting promising nongovernmental technology that is worthy of later introduction or development. After studying the result of the survey regarding the research progression plan of the selected promising technology, the following three facts are discovered: Firstly, the greater the social spillover effect, the greater the need for the government lead R&D. Secondly, among the spillover effects, the social aspect has the highest correlation with respect to the need for the government lead R&D, while the economical aspect and the technological aspect come in the second and the third place, respectively. Finally, according to the correlation analysis, the defense application and the technological importance do not affect the subject of investment or the subject of development. This indicates that even though the R&D for technology with high social spillover effect should be lead by the government, the subject of the investment or the development cannot be determined solely by factors such as military application and technological importance.

  • This study analyzed the situation of urban agriculture development through theories, paradigms, and typology to determine the application frequency and development keywords about space forming. The results showed that urban space by distance determines "Dimension of space forming" through self-production, public-production, and nation-social operation. Second, the complex space by shape determine "Identity of space forming" through "Flat Shape" for using the widespread land, "Compact Shape" for overcoming the small and poor land, and "Fusion of Flat Compact Shape" for systematic use between Flat and Compact. Third, building and interior space according to location determine the "Utility of space forming" through land, roof, wall, veranda, interior, and infrastructure space. The concepts about space forming of urban agriculture have an organic correlation and will be developed sustainably by the evolved cases from now on. In addition, space forming of urban agriculture produces new creation space by various fusion processes and will be a development trend of new urban agriculture.

  • Traffic volume increases due to diversification of industry. Also, Automobile ownerships also increase steadily. It is estimated that the registered number of vehicle is expected to be 20 milion in the year 2015. These trends may result in increasing the number of woman drivers and elderly drivers. Therefore, this study aims to identify routes that reflect characteristics of each driver's preferences. A survey was conducted on different routes attributes for variances drivers. Driver types were classified by gender, age, and driving career. Accordingly, a weight for road composition attribute such as number of lanes, number of accidents, slope was estimated by using Swing Weighting technique in Multi-Attribute Utility Theory. In addition, a case study was conducted and identified weights were applied to routes. In result, drivers commonly prefer short route when they considered their routes. Also, male drivers prefer speedy and shorter route than that of female drivers. Elderly drivers prefer safe routes that represent low accidents rate. Moreover driving career under a year drivers prefer safe and easy routes. Therefore, we may conclude that the necessity of diversified route information is essential in the future car navigation system.

  • The current study attempted to assess the environmental value of Geum-river estuary for rational management decision-making. To investigate the comprehensive properties of the Geum-river estuary, we applied the contingent valuation method based on multi-attribute utility theory. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of 400 and 600 households of the Geum-river estuary-neighboring area (Jeollabuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do), and other nation-wide large districts (except Jeollabuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, and Jeju-do), respectively, and carried out person-to-person interviews with subjects on their willingness-to-pay for the estuary conservation and management program. Respondents, overall, accepted the contingent market system and were willing to contribute a significant amount, that is 1,497 won for the residents from the Geum-river estuary-neighboring area and 4,343 won for the residents from other nation-wide large districts on average, per household per year. These results implied that there were large difference between the two groups. The aggregate values of the Geum-river estuary for the estuary-neighboring area and other nation-wide large districts amount to 2.13 and 70.15 billion won, respectively, per year. This quantitative value deduced from the current study, could be a useful baseline fact for any decision-making process particularly in the establishment of management policies for the Geum-river estuary.

  • This paper attempts to measure the environmental value of the Seomjin-River estuary that has been comparatively well conserved but is confronted with the threat of its development. Especially, in order to elicit the environmental values of its four attributes, contingent valuation method(CVM) based on multi-attribute utility theory is applied and the CVM survey was rigorously designed to comply with the guidelines. for best-practiced CVM studies. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of 300 and 350 households in the Seomjin-River estuary-neighboring area(Gwangyang, Sooncheon, Yeosu, Hadong, Namhae) and seven large cities(Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Ulsan), respectively and asked respondents questions in person-to-person interviews about what they would willing to pay for the estuary conservation and management program. Respondents overall accepted the contingent market and were willing to contribute a significant amount(5,763 won in the Seomjin-River estuary-neighboring area and 1,883 won in seven large cities), on average, per household per year, which implies that there is a large difference between the two. The aggregate values of the Seomjin-River estuary in the estuary-neighboring area and seven large cities amount to 1.52 and 14.05 billion won, respectively, per year. The quantitative values can be utilized in planning and decision-making about development versus conservation of the estuary.

  • Causal questions are prevalent in scientific research, for example, how effective a treatment was for preventing an infectious disease, how much a policy increased utility, or which advertisement would give the highest click rate for a given customer. Causal inference theory in statistics interprets those questions as inferring the effect of a given intervention (treatment or policy) in the data generating process. Causal inference has been used in medicine, public health, and economics; in addition, it has received recent attention as a tool for data-driven decision making processes. Many recent datasets are observational, rather than experimental, which makes the causal inference theory more complex. This review introduces key concepts and recent trends of statistical causal inference in observational studies. We first introduce the Neyman-Rubin's potential outcome framework to formularize from causal questions to average treatment effects as well as discuss popular methods to estimate treatment effects such as propensity score approaches and regression approaches. For recent trends, we briefly discuss (1) conditional (heterogeneous) treatment effects and machine learning-based approaches, (2) curse of dimensionality on the estimation of treatment effect and its remedies, and (3) Pearl's structural causal model to deal with more complex causal relationships and its connection to the Neyman-Rubin's potential outcome model.
