Empirical Evaluation of Optimal User-Centered LED Lighting Environments in Residential Bathrooms

  • This user-centered research aims to empirically evaluate color temperature (K) and illuminance (lx) of residential bathroom lightings to determine the most optimal lighting conditions for productive task performance as well as for satisfying users' emotional needs. Using 3 LED lighting fixtures, 4 types of lighting contexts were investigated; main lighting, task lighting, shower lighting, and bath lighting. Two lightings were installed parallel to the vertical edges of the main bathroom mirror to be used as main and task lighting, while another fixture was installed above the bathtub to be used for shower and bathing. For each lighting context, subjects (N=54) were instructed to perform a few tasks during which time the users were exposed to different lighting conditions with color temperature ranging from 2700 K ~ 6500 K and illuminance ranging from 100 lx ~ 700 lx. Upon completing the given tasks, subjects were asked to evaluate the lighting conditions and their applicability for performing the given tasks. Based on the user evaluations, the most optimal lighting conditions for the different lighting scenarios are as follow: 1) 3500 K ~ 4300 K and 150 lx for main lighting, 2) 3500 K ~ 4300 K and 500 lx ~ 700 lx for task lighting, and 3) 2700 K ~ 3500 K and 100 lx ~ 150 lx for shower/bath lighting. These results can be used to adjust the lighting standards suggested by KS, as well as be utilized by both engineers and designers in designing new types of user-centered bathroom lightings.

학교공간혁신사업 운영 가이드라인에 관한 연구 - 인천광역시교육청 미래교실사업 매뉴얼 중심으로 - (A Study on Guidelines for School Space Innovation Project - focused on the Manual for Project of Future Classroom in Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education -)

  • Today, the paradigm of education is changing from teacher-centered, facility-centered, supplier-centered to student-centered, people-centered, and user-centered. In 2019, the Ministry of Education promoted the school space innovation project to provide a school space as a balanced life space, such as learning, play, and rest, through educational activities led by students, who are the leaders of the future society. Based on this, Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education prepared a manual for practice while carrying out a project to build a future classroom. In those projects 'user participatory design' is applied as a new design approach and facilitators play an important role as experts in the process of user participatory design. However, it is different from the guidelines by the Ministry of Education in terms of facilitator role; facilitator in Incheon's future classroom projects can be in charge of designer part. This was possible because the design scope was limited to the classroom space and the construction permit work was not applied, and the Incheon Metropolitan City Office of Education seems to be able to successfully implement the plan derived through 'user participatory design' under the responsibility of the facilitator. However, this may be considered to be inconsistent with the basic purpose of the school space innovation project. In the case of the school unit project, it is considered that more systematic supplementation is necessary.

시스템조명 통합평가 및 사용자 맞춤형 가이드라인 개발 연구 - 사무공간 설계방법을 중심으로 - (A Study of Integrated Evaluation of System Lighting and User Centered Guideline Development - Focused on the Lighting Design Method for Office Space -)

  • Lighting in indoor space is being changed to system lighting converged with IT technology. Office space lighting with incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps was completed through overall lighting plan by illumination in most cases, but convergence between LED lighting and IT technology enables the technology of responding to user requirements to be realized. Optical physical quantity suitable for humans and the lighting environment in accordance with user's sensibility, based on space function and user's behavior, would contribute to the improvement of service productivity, energy reduction, and enhancement of emotional satisfaction by providing user optimized lighting solution. Thus, user-customized system lighting guidelines to be applied with integration indicators of optics and sensibility are required. For the design elements required by users, environmental factors, product characteristics, optical characteristics, and sensibility factors are drawn from the design cases for office space and the survey, and the design check list and evaluation indicators are considered to reflect the requirements in the design and requirement indicators to give integrated satisfaction for optics and sensibility are developed. Purpose-centered design method from the user's viewpoint is applied to function-focused design through scenario, and it should be applied flexibly, as the new lightning design method solutions, to the concept design stage of space lighting design and device development. This paper, therefore, presents user-customized guidelines by pursuing the optics and sensibility evaluation and design method combining the requirement conditions and scenario, to be used for lighting content development and design.

스마트시티의 User Centered Design 개념 설계 및 활용 (Design and Application of User-Centered Design Concept in Smart City)

  • 미래사회는 점차 도시화되고 있으며 이에 따라 전 세계적으로 자원 및 인프라 부족, 교통 혼잡, 에너지 부족 등 각종 도시문제가 점차 심화될 것으로 전망되고 있다. 이에 대한 해결책으로 도시에 신기술을 접목하여 각종 도시문제를 해결하고 삶의 질을 개선할 수 있는 도시모델, 도시 인프라 활용을 통한 저비용으로 도시 문제를 해결하는 스마트시티 접근 방식이 주목받고 있다. 스마트시티는 정보통신기술(Information and Communication Technologies, ICTs)을 이용하여 언제 어디서나 다양한 디바이스를 통해 이용자가 원하는 서비스를 제공하는 미래 첨단 도시를 뜻한다. 이용자가 원하는 스마트시티 서비스를 제공하기 위해서는 무엇보다 사용자 중심의 디자인 개념이 기반되어야 한다. 디자인 및 개발 프로세스를 위해서는 이와 관련된 모든 사람의 의견과 요구를 바탕으로 이루어져야하며, 모든 단계에서 사용자, 설계자 및 이해 관계자를 포함한 모든 사용자 정보와 피드백을 이상적으로 반영할 필요가 있다. 참여적 설계 접근법은 실제 사용자를 더 잘 이해하고 참여시키려는 시도로 볼 수 있으며, 보다 적절하고 사용자 친화적인 스마트시티 서비스를 만드는 데 필수적이며 중요하다. 본 연구는 사용자 중심 디자인 관점의 스마트시티 서비스 개발의 중요성을 인지하고, 스마트시티 서비스 개발을 위한 디자인씽킹과 서비스디자인 프로세스에 관한 방법론을 고찰하였다. 스마트시티 서비스 디자인을 위한 사용자 중심 디자인 개념을 설계하고, 이를 기반으로 개발된 서비스 디자인 사례를 통해 활용성을 검증하였다.

뇌 병변 장애아동을 위한 책상 개발의 융복합 연구 (A Convergence Study on the Development of the Desk for Children with Cebral Palsy)

  • The purpose of this study were to design and develop the user centered desk which considered children with cebral palsy in Korea. The developing process of the desk were performed the convergence study of the University Department of the Social Welfare and the Living Furniture Design. First of all, the 2 students and their professor of the Department of Social Welfare analyzed the literature, observed the children with cebral palsy and the needs survey of the service providers of a Welfare Center for children with cebral palsy. All of the information gathered were provided for the Department of the living Furniture Design. Second, the 2 students and their professor of the Department the Living Furniture Design proceeded the design concept, mocked up the desk for the children with cebral palsy. This was the user centered desk which considered of the features of children with cebral palsy body. Based on the results, the convergence study implications were discussed.

어포던스를 활용한 사용자 친화적 디자인 픽션 방법론 (A Method of User-Friendly Design Fiction Applying Affordances)

  • 본 연구는 사용자 중심 디자인 과정을 디자인 픽션 방법에 적용하여 사용자 친화적인 디자인픽션 방법론을 제안한 연구이다. 디자인 픽션은 미래에 대한 비평적 담론 위에 구상한 예측 시나리오를 디자인의 관점에서 물리적으로 구현하는 방법이다. 이러한 디자인 픽션은 HCI와 인터랙션 디자인 분야에서 미학적 혹은 실험적 접근으로써 많은 관심을 받고 있는 방법이지만 아직 학계에서 완전히 정립되지 않은 생소한 디자인 방법론이다. 특히, 사용자와의 접점을 모색하며 당면 문제를 해결하는 사용자 중심의 관점에서는 다루어지지 않고 있다. 현재의 문제를 기반으로 미래를 예측하며 디자인 관점에서 시나리오를 정립하는 선행디자인이 날로 중요해짐에 따라 본 연구는 그러한 선행디자인을 실험적으로 제시하는 디자인 픽션 방법이 사용자 중심의 관점에서 다루어지는 것이 필요하다고 보았다. 이에 따라, 본 연구에서는 사용자 중심 디자인 프로세스 중 사용자의 행동이나 인지에 직관적이고 직접적인 영향을 주고자 고안된 어포던스 개념을 기존 디자인 픽션의 과정에 접목하였다. 주제와 어포던스 개념을 구체적으로 디자인에 응용하고자 고안된 Design with Intent Toolkit을 시각디자인 전공 3학년 학생들에게 활용하였고, 이를 디자인 픽션의 과정으로 발전시켜 다양한 시각적 결과물을 완성하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해 본 연구는 기존의 비평적, 실험적 영역으로 국한되었던 디자인픽션 방법론외 대안으로 사용자 친화적인 디자인 픽션 방법론을 새롭게 제안하고자 한다.

  • This paper reports results of a recent survey of 184 Information Technology (IT) development practitioners and 90 User Interface (UI)/usability practitioners. This survey covered a broad range of issues including the respondents' profile, current development environment, usability and user-centered design (UCD) adoption issues in IT development practice, overall assessment of usability/UCD, and the most widely used usability/UCD methods and techniques. The results of this study are expected to provide an empirical basis for usability and UCD planning, training, adoption and execution in IT industry.

다자 중심적 사용성 평가 방법의 구조화 과정 (The Structuring Process of Multi‐Centered Usability Evaluation Method)

  • In order to minimize a biased view of evaluators in usability test, a multiple evaluation method so called Multi-Centered Usability Evaluation Method(MCUEM) was suggested and structured in this study. To use MCUEM, the existing evaluation methods were re-categorized into 'developer and evaluator-centered', 'evaluator-centered', 'user-centered', 'evaluator and user-centered', and the 'developer, evaluator, and user-centered methods. Furthermore, in order to verify the relevance of MCUEM, the usability of mobile phone was tested in this study. In results, it was found that different evaluation methods generated greatly different results, that showed the risk of using a particular usability method due to different perspectives of evaluators. At the same time, it was found that MCUEM could greatly minimize such biases. Therefore, it was concluded that using MCUEM could help the usability engineer design a test protocol with a minimal risk of bias due to different perspective of evaluators.
