The Elderly's Error Characteristics in Some Human Interactions (자극에 대한 상호작용 관점에서의 노인의 오류 특성)

  • In this research, three topics were studied for the elderly. The first was the elderly's error characteristics for tracing task and the second was for depth perception. The characteristics were compared with the young's. Twenty two old people and twenty two young people participated in the tracing experiment, respectively. In the depth perception experiment, twenty three old people and twenty two young people participated. A depth perception apparatus and a tracing one were used in the experiment. In the depth perception error, a significant difference was not detected on gender. However significant differences were detected with age and viewing distance. In the tracing error, significant difference was detected with age, also. The third experiment was push-button operation and fifteen old people participated in the experiment. As the result, operation time error was increased with the button size and the moving distance. The result of this study will be able to be considered in its user interface design to reduce the elderly's error while using a product.

Perception of Color and brightness in a combined PC and TV monitor (PC & TV 겸용 모니터에서 사용자의 색채 및 밝기 인식 특성)

  • A stuey to investigate the perception characteristics of color and brightness was conducted in a combined PC and TV monitor, The objective of this study is to suggest user's favorite color temperature in PC mode and user's favorite contrast in TV mode. Investigated factors were monitor coating(coatiog vs. non-coation)and screen brightness (30fL vs. 35fL)in first experiment and monitor coating and pucture movement(static vs. dynamic) in second experiment. The first experiment was conducted in TV mode. Twenty-three subjects (male 12, female 11) perticipated in this experiment. In first experiment, average color temperatures were about 8000K in all experimental conditions. In addition, there was significant difference between coating and non-coating screen at 0.1 level. In second experiment, average contrasts were obtained in all esperimental conditions. There was significant difference between coating and ndn-coating screen at 0.05 level, In addition, there was significant difference between static picture and dynamic picture at 0.1 level

  • As users constitute one of the three components of a transportation system; and in many respects the most important component, user perception is a critical element within the concept of transportation services as transportation exists to provide high quality service to various user groups. However, this user perception has not been studied because it is difficult to be analyzed. The purpose of this study is to introduce the importance and alternative method to consider transportation user perception for various transportation engineering areas such as service quality and safety level of transportation system. For this purpose, various studies related to transportation user perception were reviewed. In addition, experiment results were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of transportation user perception.

A Comparative Study on the Old's and the Young's Depth Perception for Universal Design (유니버설 디자인을 위한 청년층과 노인층의 깊이인식에 대한 비교연구)

  • In this study, we analyzed the old`s characteristics for depth perception in comparison with the young`s as a basic study for universal design in field of products or facilities. Twenty three of the old and twenty two of the young had participated and the depth perception apparatus was used in this experiment. Gender, viewing distance, and age were considered as factors and the differences of depth perception were analyzed for each experimental condition. In the result, a significant difference was not detected on gender, but significant differences were detected on age and viewing distance. That is, we can see that the old is remarkably worse than the young on depth perception task. Therefore, it means that these characteristics have to be absolutely considered in user interface design to improve the old`s accessibility for products or facilities.

A comparison of user perception between text-based and avatar-based chatting (온라인 채팅에서 아바타의 도입이 매체에 대한 사용자의 인지에 미치는 영향)

  • This study compares avatar-based chatting and text-based chatting. The comparison focuses on the effect of different chatting methods on user perception such as flow, social presence, and media richness. Especially the effects of avatar are examined across varying task types-work-oriented and fun-oriented. To accomplish this objective, a laboratory experiment was conducted using 80 experienced subjects. The results indicate that avatar-based chatting was more playfulness than text-based chatting in general. However, the effects of chatting methods on user perception were quite different according to the task types. There was no significant difference between avatar-based chatting and text-based chatting in the fun-oriented task, but avatar-based chatting was perceived as a more playful, focused, telepresent, and social present method in the work-oriented task.

User's Perception Characteristics on Color and Contrast for Designing the Interface of a Combined PC and TV Monitor (PC&TV 겸용모니터의 인터페이스 디자인을 위한 사용자의 색채 및 대비 지각 특성)

  • A combined PC and TV monitor has been developed in several companies. The characteristics of physical user interface in this monitor are likely to vary from existing monitors. Therefore, two experiments to investigate the physical interface characteristics of this monitor were conducted. The first experiment was to investigate the characteristics of color perception with monitor coating (coating vs. non-coating) and screen brightness (30fL vs. 35fL) in the PC mode. The second experiment was to investigate the characteristics of luminance contrast with monitor coating and image movement (static vs. dynamic) in the TV mode. Twenty-three subjects (male 12, female 11) were participated in this experiment. In the first experiment, average color temperatures were obtained in all experimental conditions. There was a significant difference between coating and non-coating screen at 0.1 level. In the second experiment, average luminance contrasts were obtained in all experimental conditions. There was a significant difference between coating and non-coating screen at 0.05 level. In addition, there was a significant difference between static picture and dynamic picture at 0.1 level.

  • This study proposed a method to apply certain fuzzy-related Quality control concepts to design customer-oriented products considering user requirements and information starting with the product development stage. This approach showed how to define the importance level of design elements and how to Quantify complex subjective perception of products using the fuzzy linguistic rating method and quality function deployment concepts. Using this approach, various customer requirements could be interpreted and reflected on the early design phase of a new product. To validate the proposed method, an experiment was conducted for designing the shape of the beeper using 14 subjects and 10 commercial beeper products. Front area, width/length ratio, thickness, curve variance, weight, and display area were selected as design elements of the beeper. The results showed that among design elements, front area and weight are significantly related with the subjective perception of the products. Consequently, this study indicates that customer decision on product selection could be made by quantification of user perception for beeper products.

Users Characteristics on the Tactile Perception of Surface Texture (표면 질감에 관한 사용자의 촉각적 인식 특성)

  • In this study, we studied characteristics on human tactile perception according to the depth and the pitch of surface roughness. Three experiments were performed for this study. The first experiment was to arrange samples in the order of their roughness. The second experiment was to group samples according to their roughness. And, the third experiment was to subjectively evaluate the level of roughness for each sample using adjective scales. Through these experimental studies, we could verify that the depth and the pitch of surface roughness give a significant effect on tactile perception and the depth gives more significant effect than the pitch. So, the depth of surface roughness must be more importantly considered than the pitch in the tactile user interface design of product.

  • Seoullo7017, an elevated linear park, was created to redevelop obsolete road infrastructure as public space, which provides unique landscapes. This study was aimed to evaluate and suggest proper planting design for improving psychological benefits in Seoullo7017. Field survey and simulation experiment were carried out to investigate the user's perception on the landscapes. Many users had negative feelings of the present landscapes in Seoullo7017, due to concrete pavement and simple planting design using big concrete pots. Landscape simulation experiment showed this perception could change depending on planting design. In especial, herb species played an important role in improving the quality of landscape in a linear park and providing positive feelings such as refreshment, warmth and naturalness. This study suggested that planting design in a linear space needs to be focused rather on the planting style and species than the volume of greens.

  • Nowadays, the studies on interface and cognition-engineering has become issues of general interest as newly design-methods which analyze the behavior of user on products. However existing studies were mainly done with verbal-centered method which made it difficult for the designer to apply for visual realization. Moreover many mistakes and noises are taken place whenever the designer converts verbal statements and needs of user into visual factors. Therefore the designer needs to analyze visual perception on user and product as visual-centered methods. This study applies the eye tracking method as analysing-instrument and aims to develop the analysis-framework, the concrete techniques of measurement and the application for the product design. At first the nature and the process of visual perception on products are reviewed for developing analysis method. Then the technique of eye tracking and the meaning of fixation and movement are discussed to specify the concrete method. The basic experiment of product can reveal general analysis process, advantage and guideline for the application of eye tracking method. The Study is peformed through the following 4 steps ; to pre-research into product design and visual perception theory ; to identify the concrete experiment method, to measure the fixation/movement data and analyze the raw data, to convert the result of analysis to the visual framework. Finally the major findings and the limits of the study are suggested and summarized.
