To produce fruiting bodies of Oudemansiella mucida, porcelain fungus, on the oak sawdust medium, additives suitable for the mycelial growth and fruiting body formation were screened. In general, the mycelial growth of the three strains of O. mucida used in this study have been good on oak sawdust mixed rice bran of $20{\sim}30%$. The mycelia incubated in potato dextrose broth for 7 days were inoculated on oak sawdust medium supplemented with various ratios of rice bran and incubated for 30 days at $25^{\circ}C$ in the dark condition until the mycelia of O. mucida fully colonized the media from top to bottom. Then, top surface of the media in the bottles were horizontally scratched with a spatula and filled with tap water for 3 hours. To induce the primordial formation of O. mucida, the bottles were transferred to the mushroom cultivating room under 12 hrs of light (350 lux) and dark condition with relative humidity of 95% at $17^{\circ}C$. The primordia of O. mucida were formed on the surface of oak sawdust media after 7 days of incubation. The mature fruiting bodies were observed 5 days after primordial formation. The fruiting bodies O. mucida were formed on oak sawdust medium mixed with 5 to 30% rice bran. However, abundant fruiting-bodies of O. mucida were produced in oak sawdust medium supplemented with 20% rice bran. This is the first report associated with an artificial fruiting body production of O. mucida in Korea.
The cultural characteristics and antibacterial activities of Cordyceps militaris and Paecilomyces tenuipes were compared. The mycelial growth was the highest on MCM (Mushroom Complete Medium) for C. militaris and on YMA (Yeast Malt Agar) for P. tenuipes. But the mycelial density on MMM (Mushroom Minimal Medium) was lower than other on media. The optimum mycelial growth was observed at $25^{\circ}C$. C. militaris was low mycelial growth when it was transferred over 5 times generation. The carbon source for the optimum mycelial growth was fructose of monosaccharide, maltose of disaccharide and dextrin of polysaccharide. The calcium nitrate of organonitrogen was found the best mycelial growth on C. militaris, while the sodium nitrate observed to be well for mycelial growth on P. tenuipes. The ammonium tartrate was observed to be the best among the inorganonitrogen used for mycelial growth. Antibacterial activities were found out just C. militaris against Bacillus cereus of Gram (+).
The common split-gilled mushroom, Schizophyllum commune is found throughout the world on woody plants. This study was initiated to evaluate conditions for favorable vegetative growth and to determine molecular phylogenetic relationship in twelve different strains of S. commune. A suitable temperature for mycelial growth was obtained at $30^{\circ}C$. This mushroom grew well in acidic conditions and pH 5 was the most favorable. Hamada, glucose peptone, Hennerberg, potato dextrose agar and yeast malt extract were favorable media for growing mycelia, while Lilly and glucose tryptone were unfavorable. Dextrin was the best and lactose was the less effective carbon source. The most suitable nitrogen sources were calcium nitrate, glycine, and potassium nitrate, whereas ammonium phosphate and histidine were the least effective for the mycelial growth of S. commune. The genetic diversity of each strain was investigated in order to identify them. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA were amplified using PCR. The size of the ITS1 and ITS2 regions of rDNA from the different strains varied from 129 to 143 bp and 241 to 243 bp, respectively. The sequence of ITS1 was more variable than that of ITS2, while the 5.8S sequences were identical. A phylogenetic tree of the ITS region sequences indicated that the selected strains were classified into three clusters. The reciprocal homologies of the ITS region sequences ranged from 99 to 100%. The strains were also analyzed by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) with 20 arbitrary primers. Twelve primers efficiently amplified the genomic DNA. The number of amplified bands varied depending on the primers used or the strains tested. The average number of polymorphic bands observed per primer was 4.5. The size of polymorphic fragments was obtained in the range of 0.2 to 2.3 kb. These results indicate that the RAPD technique is well suited for detecting the genetic diversity in the S. commune strains tested.
The incorporation of Shiitake culture into sawdust is a widely utilized technique that can assist in reducing the cost and time consumption associated with oak cultivation. In sawdust cultivation, browning of the surface mycelia is an important stage with respect to the utility and longevity of the sawdust media. Surface browning forms a protective coating on the substrate, which can inhibit the invasion of pathogens and suppress water evaporation. Several different light sources (red LED, white LED, blue LED, and fluorescent light) were used and the intensity of illumination was carefully controlled (1.5, 10.5, $20.5{\mu}mol/m^2s$ for LEDs and 10, 100, 300 lux for the fluorescent light) to induce browning. The light sources were regulated via a 1 h on/off cycle in a controlled room environment at a temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, 60% humidity, and 1200 ppm $CO_2$ concentration for 60days. The browning effect varied depending on the source and the intensity of illumination. This effect was most effectively induced at $1.5{\mu}mol/m^2s$ for the red and blue LEDs. All light sources induced less browning at the highest intensity of illumination. This indicates that intensity values higher than $20.5{\mu}mol/m^2s$ in the case of the LEDs and 300 lux for the fluorescent light are not effective. After harvesting of the fruit bodies, we measured the weight, length, and width of the pileus and stipe in addition to their chromaticity and hardness. Treatment with $1.5{\mu}mol/m^2s$ blue LED produced the best harvest with the highest average chromaticity, weight (21.2 g), stipe length (30.8 mm), and hardness (377.9 g), with a fine length and width of the pileus.

Three mushroom mycelia, Ganoderma lucidum, Hericium erinaceum, and Phellinus linteus, were separately diluted with the natural culture media Acanthopanax senticosus. Solid-state fermentation was used to produce three different A. senticosus-fermented mushroom mycelium groups: G. lucidum mycelia, H. erinaceum mycelia, and P. linteus mycelia. The resulting mycelia were analyzed to assess their efficacies as health functional foods. Optimized fermentation conditions were determined by considering the density and growth speed of mycelia in each A. senticosus-fermented mushroom mycelium group. The cultured mushroom mycelia under the optimized conditions were extracted using water and 70% ethanol. Extraction was followed by filtration, concentration and freeze-drying to produce extract powder of A. senticosus-fermented mushroom mycelia: Water extracts (FM-5111, FM-5121, and FM-5131) and 70% ethanol extracts (FM-5112, FM-5122, and FM-5132). Analysis of extract powder of A. senticosus-fermented mushroom mycelia was performed using the maker compounds eleutheroside B and eleutheroside E. Analysis of ${\beta}$-glucan contents was performed by enzymatic procedures.

This study was performed to investigate the effective components of media of Pleurotus eryngii for bottle cultivation and several alternative material for reducing cost and smooth supply. The results show that Potato starch, Cocoa shell, Corn gluten feed, Soybean flour(solvent extracted), Cottonseed hull, Poultry manure can be replaced in Bean curd dregs of basal substrates. Especially addition of Soybean flour at 2~8% and Poulty manure at 2% in place of Bean curd dregs is effective for mycelial growth of P. eryngii, Also Pine sawdust appears that can be replaced by Softwood sawdust and addition of softwood sawdust at 25.2% is most effective. Addition of $CaCO_3$, at 2~3%, $K_2CO_3$, at 0.2%, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ in 0.1%, $MnSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ in 0.05% is effective for mycelial growth of P. eryngii, Activation materials used in this study have not enough benefit for mycelial growth in the financial aspect.
The two parts of chestnut peels, outer and inner layers, were collected and investigated for cultivation of various mushrooms, i.e., Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinus edodes, Hericium ramosum and the others. The inner layer of chestnut peels was contaminated with the mycelia of the blue fungi when collected, consisted of 17~20 % holocellulose, being a good material for growths of the above fungi. The outer layer was considered to be poor materials for fungal growth, because of lower amounts of minerals. Both mushrooms of Pleurotus ostreatus and Hericium ramosum grow well, and were produced fruiting bodies on the solid media containing only inner layers of chestnut peels. The Imhyup No.6 and Imhyup No.7 varieties of Lentinus edodes grow well, but produced few fruiting bodies in the solid media containing only inner layers of chestnut peels. The growth patterns of P. ostreatus and L. edodes were evaluated by production of $CO_2$. and considered to be different according to fungi. The inner layers of chestnut peels as agricultural by-products were considered to be a good material for mushroom cultivation, and outer layers could be used as being added with the other additives. The chestnut peels, being the environmental pollutants in rural areas, was considered to be a good substrate for mushroom cultivation.
Tile effects of addition of eggshell to sawdust substrate for the growth of F. velutipes were investigated. Eggshell used in this study contained 20.7% C, 0.81% N, 2530 ppm $P_2O_5$ and 44.37% Ca. The addition of eggshell resulted in the increase in bulk density and decrease of moisture content of the substrate. The addition of eggshell significantly increased the yield of the mushroom fruitbody. The addition rate of 15% (v/v), by 25% and at the rates of 5% and 10%, about 20%. Although the addition of eggshell to substrate did not improve the quality of mushroom, it increased the number of effective stipes as compared to control plot; approximately 13% more than in the control plot.
The sterile form of Inonotus obliquus is used for preparation of the medicine befungin that is effective in the treatment of gastritis, gastric ulcers, and several tumors. The fungus is known to be produced mainly on the stems of Betula platyphylla var. japonica that grows at high altitudinal (above 1,100 m) region in Korea. But, we found the mushroom on the stem of Betula costata at Mt. Jumbong in Korea. We isolated a pure culture of the fungus from the stem of B. costata by use of potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium with streptomycin. We could isolate the fungus from plant's tissue filled with hyphae, but not from other parts. The spore collected from the sclerotia showed $6.0{\sim}10.0{\times}4.5{\sim}6.0{\mu}m$ in diameter, and the hypha was $2.5{\sim}5.0{\mu}m$ in thickness. The colony showed irregular features and scattered yellow color at the center as the culture ages. We could find brownish setae at the yellow region of colony at 20 days of culture, and the size ranged $4{\sim}6{\times}100{\sim}420{\mu}m$. The oatmeal agar (OA) provided best growth for I. obliquus among five media (CDA, CMA, MA, OA and PDA). Optimum temperature ranged $25{\sim}30^{\circ}C$, and optimum pH was relatively alkaline with the range of pH 8.0~9.5.

'Yong-A' was bred by Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2015. It was primarily selected through monospore crossing between JNM21008 and JNM21013 in 2009. The strain is named as JNM-Mi-194 and 'Yong-A', showing major characteristics with good production yield. The cultivation characteristics, yield potential, and fruiting body characteristics of 'Yong-A' are as follows; The wrinkle of the fruiting body was of branching type its shape was wave type. MCM, YM, Malt, and PDA media were suitable for growth of this cultivar. The number of effective stipes was 13 ea/0.9 kg. The minor axis of pileus was 5 cm and the major axis was 9 cm. The yield was 291 g per plastic bag (0.9 kg). Yong-A required 60 days for mycelial running at $20^{\circ}C$. The growth and primordial period required 24 days, which was shorter than that of JNM-Mi-21002 (the conventional cultivar). Somatic incompatibility was observed between parental lines and Yong-A. Analysis of genetic diversity in the new variety 'Yong-A' showed a different profile compared to that of the parent strain when Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA primers were used.
