  • We introduce the Transformable Reflective Telescope (TRT) kit that applies an aluminum profile as a base plate for precise, stable, and lightweight optical system. It has been utilized for optical surface measurements, developing alignment and baffle systems, observing celestial objects, and various educational purposes through Research & Education projects. We upgraded the TRT kit using the aluminum profile and truss and isogrid structures for a high-end optical test device that can be used for prototyping of precision telescopes or satellite optical systems. Thanks to the substantial aluminum profile and lightweight design, mechanical deformation by self-weight is reduced to maximum 67.5 ㎛, which is an acceptable misalignment error compared to its tolerance limits. From the analysis results of non-linear vibration simulations, we have verified that the kit survives in harsh vibration environments. The primary mirror and secondary mirror modules are precisely aligned within 50 ㎛ positioning error using the high accuracy surface finished aluminum profile and optomechanical parts. The cross laser module helps to align the secondary mirror to fine-tune the optical system. The TRT kit with the precision aluminum mirror guarantees high quality optical performance of 5.53 ㎛ Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) at the field center.

  • The development of a light-weight vehicle is in great demand for enhancement of fule efficiency and dynamic performance. The vehicle weight can be reduced effectively by using lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium. However, if such materials are used in vehicles, there are often instances when different materials such as aluminum and steel need to be joined to each other. The conventional joining method, namely resistance spot welding, cannot be used in joining different materials. Self-piercing rivet(SPR) and adhesive bonding, however, are good alternatives to resistance spot welding. This paper is concerned with the crushing test of double hat-shaped member made by resistance spot welding, SPR and adhesive bonding. Various parameters of crashworthiness are analyzed and evaluated. Based on these results, the applicability of SPR and adhesive bonding are proposed as an alternative to resistance spot welding.

  • Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to these mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique, a special experimental apparatus, can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate loading condition. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of the aluminum alloys, Al2024-T4, Al6061-T6 and Al7075-T6, under high strain rate compressive and tensile loading are determined using SHPB technique.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and experiments of surface-micromachined aluminum micromirror array with hidden pin-joints. Instead of the conventional elastic spring components as connection between mirror plate and supporting structure, we used pin-joint composed of pin and staples to support the mirror plate. The placement of pin-joint under the mirror plate makes large active surface area possible. These flexureless micromirrors are driven by electrostatic force. As the mirror plate has discrete deflection angles, the device can be ap;lied to adaptive optics and digitally-operating optical applications. Four-level metal structural layers and semi-cured photoresist sacrificial layers were used in the fabrication process and sacrificial layers were removed by oxygen plasma ashing. Static characteristics of fabricated samples were measured and compared with modeling results.

  • In this paper the maximum current carrying capability of ACAs flip chip joint is investigated based on two failure mechanisms: (1) degradation of the interface between gold stud bumps and aluminum pads; and (2) ACA swelling between chips and substrates under high current stress. For the determination of the maximum allowable current, bias stressing was applied to ACAs flip chip joint. The current level at which current carrying capability is saturated is defined as the maximum allowable current. The degradation mechanism under high current stress was studied by in-situ monitoring of gold stud bump-aluminum pad ACA contact resistance and also ACA junction temperature at various current level. The cumulative failure distributions were used to predict the lifetime of ACAs flip chip joint under high current stressing. These experimental results can be used to better understand and to improve the current carrying capability of ACA flip chip joint.

  • Lately, high production rate welding processes for Al alloys, which are used as LNG FPSO cargo containment system material, have been developed to overcome the limit of installation and high rework rates. In particular, plasma-metal inert gas (MIG) hybrid (PMH) welding can be used to obtain a higher deposition rate and lower porosity, while facilitating a cleaning effect by preheating and post heating the wire and the base metal. However, an asymmetric undercut and a black-colored deposit are created on the surface of PMH weld in Al alloys. For controlling the surface defect formation, the wire feeding speed and nozzle diameter in the PMH weld was investigated through arc phenomena with high-speed imaging and metallurgical analysis.

  • Nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), a self-ordered hexagonal array has various applications for nanofabrication such as nanotemplate, and nanostructure. In order to obtain highly-ordered porous alumina membranes, Masuda et al. proposed a two-step anodization process however this process is confined to small domain size and long hours. Recently, alternative methods overcoming limitations of two-step process were used to make prepatterned Al surface. In this work, we confirmed that there is a specific tendency used a PDMS stamp to obtain a pre-patterned Al surface. Using the nanoindentaions of a PDMS stamp as chemical carrier for wet etching, we can easily get ordered nanoporous template without two-step process. This chemical etching method using a PDMS stamp is very simple, fast and inexpensive. We use two types of PDMS stamps that have different intervals (800nm, 1200nm) and change some parameters have influenced the patterning of being anodized, applied voltage, soaking and stamping time. Through these factors, we demonstrated the patterning effect of large scale PDMS stamp.

  • This study was performed to examine the effects of aluminum addition and recycle of NaOH waste solution on CEC and crystallinity of zeolite synthesized from fly ash. The added aluminum was used as the source of zeolite framework in zeolitization of fly ash. CEC and crystallinity of Na-P1 zeolite synthesized with aluminum addition were increased from 285 to $365cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ and from 44.3 to 57.1% compared to that of simple hydrothermal treatment, respectively. The recycled NaOH solution did not affect the CEC of reaction products, though the crystallinity was decreased a little. Therefore, the additional supply of aluminum could improve the quality of zeolite synthesized from fly ash and the recycle of NaOH during zeolite synthesis can save the chemical without any adverse effects in the quality of synthesized seolite.

  • Techniques for selectively separating molecules of gas and liquid states using various separation membranes have been widely used in variety of applications such as chemical, biological, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical industries. As the nanochannel diameter, inter-channel distance and length of the nanochannel of the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes can be precisely controlled, various studies to effectively separate mixture of various molecules using AAO membrane have been widely carried out. In this study, we fabricated AAO membranes of cylindrical nanochannels of various diameter sizes and of through-hole structure, that is, nanochannels of which both ends of each nanochannel are open. Using those AAO membranes of through-hole nanochannel structure, we studied the selective permeation polymer chains dissolved in a solvent based on hydraulic volume of the polymer chains. We found a precise, quantitative relationship between the radius of gyration of polymer chains that permeated through nanochannels inside AAO membrane and the diameter of nanochannels. In addition, we demonstrate that the behavior of the polymer solution flowing through nanochannel of the AAO membrane can be successfully described with the Hagen-Poiseuille relationship. It is, therefore, possible to theoretically interpret the nanoflow of the solution flowing inside the cylindrical nanochannel.

  • Background: Panax ginseng is an important crop in Asian countries given its pharmaceutical uses. It is usually harvested after 4-6 years of cultivation. However, various abiotic stresses have led to its quality reduction. One of the stress causes is high content of heavy metal in ginseng cultivation area. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can play a role in healthy growth of plants. It has been considered as a new trend for supporting the growth of many crops in heavy metal occupied areas, such as Aluminum (Al). Methods: In vitro screening of the plant growth promoting activities of five tested strains were detected. Surface-disinfected 2-year-old ginseng seedlings were dipping in Rhizobium panacihumi DCY116T suspensions for 15 min and cultured in pots for investigating Al resistance of P. ginseng. The harvesting was carried out 10 days after Al treatment. We then examined H2O2, proline, total soluble sugar, and total phenolic contents. We also checked the expressions of related genes (PgCAT, PgAPX, and PgP5CS) of reactive oxygen species scavenging response and pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. Results: Among five tested strains isolated from ginseng-cultivated soil, R. panacihumi DCY116T was chosen as the potential PGPR candidate for further study. Ginseng seedlings treated with R. panacihumi DCY116T produced higher biomass, proline, total phenolic, total soluble sugar contents, and related gene expressions but decreased H2O2 level than nonbacterized Al-stressed seedlings. Conclusion: R. panacihumi DCY116T can be used as potential PGPR and "plant strengthener" for future cultivation of ginseng or other crops/plants that are grown in regions with heavy metal exposure.
