  • Objective: The purpose of the study is to develop quantitative usability evaluation criteria for senior-friendly autonomous transportation robot. Background: The Republic of Korea has become the most rapidly aging society, and is anticipated to enter the post-aged society in 2026. To raise the quality of life of a senior with limited mobility and to reduce the burden of caregivers, many high-tech assistive products with information technologies are developed nowadays. The senior-friendly autonomous transportation robot is one person robot vehicle to move a senior to the destination for hospitals, nursing homes or silver town complex. With built-in navigation system and environmental monitoring censors, it automatically seeks the path to the destination and avoids collision to obstacles and pedestrians on the way. Due to the early stage of the product, few usability studies in this field have been done, mostly on general service robots to assist seniors, power wheelchairs and delivery robots. ISO and KS standards for the service robots are focused on safety. Method: Based on the reference usability index, the early draft of the usability evaluation questionnaires was developed. After small group tests and interviews, the experts modified the initial draft to the Usability Evaluation Criteria for Senior-Friendly Autonomous Transportation Robot (UEC-SFATR). Result: UEC-SFATR consisted of 4 subscales - Safety, Controllability, Efficiency and Satisfaction. All of the 4 subscales of UEC-SFATR were passed the reliability criteria by 4 groups of seniors, divided by gender and familiarity of smart-devices. Conclusion: UEC-SFATR covers wider area of user experiences of the SFATR and is a good measurement tool to help both the users and developers of the robot. Application: This study provides guide to the future product development and product competitiveness evaluation by quantifying user experiences for the SFATR.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the attributing factors influencing usability of the mobile phones specifically designed for the elderly users. Efforts to identify factors that cause usability problems for the elderly users in using mobile phones can provide the groundwork for changes aimed at usability enhancement and design of interfaces of mobile phones. Background: It became important to understand the behaviors and tendencies of the elderly in communication as the society became older. The problems in digital divide is contributed to mainly lack of understanding in terms of the use pattern of the elderly and lack of consideration of their characteristics in designing user interfaces of most ICT devices. Method: A total of 30 elderly users who were over 65 years in age participated in usability evaluation test experiment and performed seven different tasks using a widely accepted model of universally designed mobile phone. Their performance was compared with that of contrast group that consisted of 10 younger participants who were on their 20s. Results: It was found that the elderly users had hard times in using mobile phones, especially in keypad manipulation among search, understanding, and manipulation subtasks. Conclusion: Older users seemed to have difficulty in all the subtasks of search, recognition, and manipulation. It was suggested that designers of mobile phones need to give careful consideration into designing visual interfaces for search tasks and keypads for easier control and input for the elderly users. Application: The study is expected to provide guidelines for the universal design of mobile phones and their interfaces for enhancing usability of the mobile phone for elderly users.

  • In this study, in order to provide an app with improved usability to users in the trend of gradually increasing the number of users of music streaming services, usability tests were conducted by conducting interviews before and after the execution of the screen test technique and the performance measurement method and contextual. Usability test was conducted using the Inquiry method. Usability tests were conducted by one user each from their teens to their 50s, and were conducted on Melon, YouTube Music, Genie, and FLO apps with many service users. As a result of the usability test, the icon does not sufficiently represent the function and is not recognized as an interactive button, which is overlooked by the user, the problem that the user does not recognize due to lack of visual effect when the function is activated, The problem was derived. In this regard, suggestions for improving the user screen, such as intuitively changing the icon for each app, adding a visual effect of the screen when the function is activated, and adjusting the position so that the function has continuity, were presented along with the visual data.

  • This study examines the impact of knowledge processes (KP) on the performance of knowledge management systems (KMS). It posits that task needs and available functionality of technology existing in an organization could influence the usability of KP and the KMS performance. A firm-level structural model was developed based on data collected from corporate KM users. Survey-based research was carried out to test this model. Following questionnaire development, validation, and pretest with a pilot study, data were collected from 886 knowledge management (KM) users including directors, managers, and workers in a South Korea-based company, Korea Asset Management Corporation (KAMCO), to measure the task needs and available functionality of technology to improve the KMS performance. Results show that the matching between the two factors-technology and task-had a significant influence on the usability of KP and the KMS performance, and a better usability of KP has positive impact on the KMS performance. Implications on KM practices and KMS designs are also discussed.

  • This article describes the process involved in usability testing a agricultural information Web site. In addition to determining the goals and requirements for the agricultural information Web site, a user and task analysis was conducted for defining the its user base and the types of tasks which users might be performing at the site. Usability testing methods with close observation and in-depth interviews provided fresh insights about how users are interacting with the agricultural information Web interface as they approach various information seeking tasks. This study uncovered problems related to unclear terminology, improper interface, location for navigational links, need for context sensitive help, built-in redundancy, and clear and consistent navigation.

  • This study developed seven assumptions to demonstrate the effect of personal innovation, social influences, service quality, mobility and accessibility on perceived usability, perceived convenience use and use intention using a technology acceptance model developed by Davis(1989), and the results are presented as follows: First, the assumption that personal innovation and service quality of mobile banking service will influence the perceived usability was adopted while the assumption that social influences will affect the perceived usability was rejected. Second, the assumption that mobility and accessibility of mobile banking services will influence the perceived convenient use was selected. Third, the assumption that the perceived usability of mobile banking service will influence use intention was rejected while the assumption that the convenient use will influence use intention was adopted. This study suggests that as personal innovation, service quality, mobility and accessibility have a significant influence on use of mobile banking, service providers should pay more attention to development of security programs and diversification of contents.

  • Classivication scheme of usability element for the evaluation of consumer electronic product was developed in this study. Using hierachical structuring and clustering methods, usability element of consumer products interface is developed both for the performance perspective and for the image/appeal perspective of a product. Perfoormance element included variables such as simplicity, directness, learn- ability, flexibility, user support and effectiveness. Image/Appeal element included variables such as sensibility, descriptive impression, evaluation of appeal, and attitude towards the product. The classifi- cation scheme developed in this study is found to be comprehensive and robust relative to other existing paradigms. They can be effectively used and applied for the usability evaluation of consumer electronic products.

  • The present study examined the usability of the web site design, focusing on the cognitive characteristics of the WWW. Specifically, we conducted two major non-experimental usability testing methods on the domestic web sites with various purposes. In research I. we used an on-line questionnaire method on 12 domestic web sites. As a result. several critical usability features and factors were identified. In research 2. we carried out a heuristic evaluation method to identify more specific usability problems The result of research 2 suggests that the heuristic evaluation method reveals more specific problems of the web site design than the questionnaire method.

  • To improve the dCollection system, it is suggested that the usability tests of the dCollection system are needed to find out whether submitters or IR managers are satisfied with the system or not. For the usability evaluations, we used sixty participants, thirty for its management module and thirty for its submit and retrieval modules and for its test constructed the five evaluation indicators including architectural/visual clarity and effectiveness. Based on the results of the usability tests, some improvements in terms of supportiveness, usefulness and visual clarity were suggested.
