The flower of Campsis grandiflora K. Schum. Was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and the concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH and H$_2$O. From the EtO Ac fraction, seven triterpenoids were isolated through the repeated silica gel, ODS column chromatographies and preparative HPLC. From the result of physico- chemical data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as 3${\beta}$-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (oleanolic acid, 1), 3${\beta}$-hydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (ursolic acid, 2), 3${\beta}$-hydroxyurs-12-en-28-al (ursolic aldehyde, 3), 2${\alpha}$,3${\beta}$-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (maslinic acid, 4), 2${\alpha}$,3${\beta}$-dihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (corosolic acid, 5), 3${\beta}$,23-dihydroxyurs-12- en-28-oic acid (23-hydroxyursolic acid ,6) and 2${\alpha}$,3${\beta}$,23-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28- oic acid (arjunolic acid, 7). These teriterpenoids were isolated for the first time from this plant. Also, compounds 4, 5, 6, and 7 revealed relatively high hACAT-1 inhibitory activity with the value of 46.2${\pm}$1.1, 46.7${\pm}$0.9, 41.5${\pm}$1.3 and 60.8${\pm}$1.1% at the concentration of 100${\mu}$g/mL, respectively.
Triterpenoids. Ursolic acid (1). 23-hydroxyursolic acid (2). and tormentic acid (3) were obtained by the hydrolysis of BuOH fraction of Cussonia bancoensis extract and further chromatographic isolation to test antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of C. bancoensis (Aratiaceae). Compound 1 and 2 exhibited anti-nociceptive effects, which were determined by acetic acid-induced writhing test and hot plate test. However. the effect of tormentic acid was not significant (omitted)
In result of analysis for the content determination of ursolic acid(UA) and oleanolic acid(OA) in extract of Eriobotryae folium using HPLC with UV detector, UA in chloroform extract of Moo-mok variety was showed highest content(2.7843 mg/g). And OA in ethyl acetate extract of Dae-bang variety was showed highest content(0.5898 mg/g). These result suggest that direct extraction using organic solvent(chloroform or ethyl acetate) was useful method for rapid quantitative analysis of UA and OA without preprocessing such as drying or fractionation.
The ether soluble fraction of the methanol extract from the fruits of Crataegus pinnatifida var. psilosa was applied to silica gel column chromatography, eluted step-gradiently with a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol, repeatedly, and five compounds were isolated. These compounds are identified as ursolic acid(I), corosolic acid(II) and euscapic acid (III), ${\beta}-sitosteryl-3-O-{\beta}-_D-glucopyranoside(IV)$ and hyperin(V).
Solubilities of oleanolic acid and ursolic acid in aqueous surfactant solutions, liquid polyethylene glycols (PEG), and solvents of various polarity were measured. The results showed that the solutes were slightly or moderately solubilized in the surfactant solutions and the liquid PEGS. It was also revealed that the solutes were slightly soluble in the solvent of either extreme polarity or nonpolarity, but moderately soluble in solvents of intermediate polarity of which solubility parameters are around 10. The solubility parameters of these solutes were calculated from the group contribution to be 10.2 for both of them. Of the solvents tested, tetramethylurea was exceptionally effective in solubilizing the solutes. The solutes were also moderately soluble in the aqueous cosolvents containing tetramethylurea. This suggests that the mixed systems of tetramethylurea could be employed for the solubilization in the formulation of these compounds as an aqueous system.

We investigated the effect of various triterpenoids isolated from the Cussonia bancoensis. such as ursolic acid. 23-hydroxyursolic acid. 3-O-${\alpha}$-L -arabinopyranosyl-23 -hydroxyursolic acid. 3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-23-hydroxy-ursolic acid and 28-O-${\alpha}$-L -rhamnopyranosyl(1-4)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl( 1-6)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosylester of 23-hydroxyursolic acid. have been evaluated on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release by the macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. The root bark of Morus alba L. has cytotoxic activity against several types of cancer cells. However, little is known about its chemopreventive mechanisms and bioactive metabolites. In this study, we showed that M. alba L. root bark extracts (MRBE) suppressed β-catenin response transcription (CRT), which is aberrantly activated in various cancers, by promoting the degradation of β-catenin. In addition, MRBE repressed the expression of the β-catenin/T-cell factor (TCF)-dependent genes, c-myc and cyclin D1, thus inhibiting the proliferation of RPMI-8226 multiple myeloma (MM) cells. MRBE induced apoptosis in MM cells, as evidenced by the increase in the population of annexin VFITC-positive cells and caspase-3/7 activity. We identified ursolic acid in MRBE through LC/mass spectrum (MS) and observed that it also decreased intracellular β-catenin, c-myc, and cyclin D1 levels. Furthermore, it suppressed the proliferation of RPMI-8226 cells by stimulating cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. These findings suggest that MRBE and its active ingredient, ursolic acid, exert antiproliferative activity by promoting the degradation of β-catenin and may have significant chemopreventive potential against MM.
Prunasin and pomolic acid together with a mixture of ursolic and oleanolic acids, (-)-epicatechin and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ glucoside were isolated from the roots of Chaenomeles japonica. Among these compounds, the isolation of pomolic acid and prunasin is the first report from the genus Chaenomeles.
Four ursane-type triterpenoids, ursolic acid (1), 23-hydroxyursolic acid (2), corosolic acid (3), and tormentic acid (4), and a phytosterol, ${\beta}-sitosterol-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$, were isolated from an EtOAcsoluble extract of the aerial parts of Potentilla discolor. The structures of 1-4 were identified by spectroscopic methods, particularly by extensive NMR studies. This is the first report on the isolation of compounds 1-4 from this plant.

Very little utilization of the fruits of Malus baccata(Rosaceae) has been employed for food and medicinal plants except for preparing fruit beverages. But, it was estimated as valuable to investigate the chemical components for the botanical resource of this plant. In this study, it was found that the fruits of this plant contained primary long chain alcohol, ${\beta}-sitosterol$, campesterol, ursolic acid and ${\beta}-_D-glucosides$ of ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and campesterol. However, phloretin(dihydrochalcone) and its 5-O-glucoside(phloridzin) known as plant growth regulators in many Rosaceae plants were not found in this plant material by co-TLC analysis with authentic specimens. Although plant sex hormone, estrone, was often contained in relates of M. baccata, e.g., Prunus spp., Crataegus spp. and Malus spp., this compound was not detected in this fruit by comparison with an authentic material. By RIC chromatography, it was suggested that the Soxhlet extraction by the solvent of ether was excellently useful to extract ursolic acid efficiently.
