Public space is considered as a symbolic representation of the urban organizatiov. In history, especially in Italy, the plaza was a common tool in reflecting people's lives through its use as a theatre. However, this role of plaza as a public space has lost its value with the population increase and the urban centralization of the city. This study attempts to reevaluate the needed of public space in modern society through a critical review of plaza and its use as a theatre. Content analysis was used to discuss the topics of this study including the historical background of the urban plaza, the relationship between plaza and theatre, and the role of public space and its impact on urban environment. The scope of the study is limited to the development of urban plaza from the ancient Greek to premodern Italy. Today, the concept of space is altered with the advent of cyberspace, This study provides insights for the future implications of plaza and theatre in developing public space for its a new definition as cultural representatiov.

  • This study focuses on the genealogical analysis of the urban public spaces by the local history of Seoul which is significantly different from western cities. The analysis targets the discourse of the urban street which defines urban space-structure among the urban public spaces. Based on the analysis, we define the progress levels of urban public design policy in Seoul. Firstly, in 1960's and 1970's, 'urban reconstruction' was intensively carried out for the country modernization, and 'vehicle preferred street expansion' resulted in damages to historical inheritance, in-humanized street, and cultural uniformity. 1980's and 1990's would be defined as 'politic acceptance of plural values to the urban street.' There were the Olympic Games held in Seoul in 1988, which were the celebrations of the 600th capital establishment and the autonomous local government system. In the meanwhile, diverse values on the urban street were discussed in terms of globalization. There also were the self-reflection for the urban skyscrapers and high-population rate, the cultural uniformity of urban street, and the commercialization in downtown with urban reconstruction plans. Then, the sense of landscape and amenity was focused. Various urban projects and regulations were held according to the changes of value recognition. 2000's can be defined as 'introduction to the organic integration and the urban public design governance.' In the 21st century, types of recognition have changed significantly, which include publicness, humanism, sustainability, symbolism, artistry, placeness, and communication. They cause the establishment of ordinances and the installation of integrated organization via urban design administration. The legislation has been revised in order to support the various methods for the maintenance and operation of urban landscape in terms of local characteristics. New regulations were established for residents to participate in the processes of the urban planning with street design policy.

  • There are increasing needs about creation and sustainable management of urban forest for environmental conservation and recreational service for citizen. However, it is difficult for local governments to create or manage urban forest in recreational or conservational way. The purpose of this study is to classify the urban forest types by considering its geographical feature, biological and sociological characteristics in order to suggest a guide to local governments about effective creation or management of urban forest. In this study, we extracted common characteristics of the selected five indicators. Factors about urban forest are divided into two groups. Factors were named according to the variables as 'Urban Forest Naturalness', and 'High Accessibility and Disturbed by Human.' In addition, we classified urban forests into four types in this study. The type I of urban forest is a large forest and has high naturalness such as Mt. Bukhan and Mt. Gwanak. The type II is fragmented to large forests by developmental projects. The type III is flat and has high accessibility such as forest behind Seonjeongneung. The type IV is located near residential area such as Mt. Ansan, Mt. Inwang and Mt. Bonghwa. It is possible to set up recreational area for citizens and ecological networks for species by the research of the urban forest type. The results of the study, classification of urban forest types and its application, contribute to provide a guide for local governments to create or manage urban forests effectively.
