The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental carrying capacity of Chongju City for the environmental management and the urban growth management. The urban environmental carrying capacity assessment of the city by the index of ecological footprint(EF), shows that the ecosystem of the city has been overloaded and most of the deficiencies has come from outside of the city. The EF index, the area of land per capita required for production and consumption in the city, was 1.731 ha per capita in 1989 and 1.901 ha per capita in 1999. On the other side, the ecologically productive land is 0.0175 ha per capita. It means that every citizen owes 1.88 ha per capita to the ecosystem in 1999. The land consumption of the city has increased by 0.1705 ha per capita during the last 10 years. The capacity of infrastructure and the service supply estimated by the Onishi model does not exceed the demand of the city in 1999. But the rapidly increasing population and fast urban growth need the expansion of the capacity. The water supply capacity of the city appears to be sufficient in 1999, but the water supply demand will increase in the future. The capacity of sewage treatment facilities seems to be sufficient, but the higher level of sewage treatment facilities should be adopted for the improvement of water quality as the generation of sewage will increase and its characteristics will also make the wastewater treatment difficult. Due to the decrease of solid waste generated, the land fill capacity for solid waste disposal is not insufficient at present, but the capacity will be saturated in the near future. Therefore, the scientific management system of solid wastes should be introduced. The air quality of the city meets both the national air quality standard and WHO recommendation standard, but the strong regulation and control of automobile emission gas such as CO, $CO_2$, NOx and HC is required for clean air.

The purpose of this study is to present the basic data for restoration of physical stream environment by analyzing habitat variables because habitat environment is changed due to the construction of waterfront space in urban streams. Assessment results of 10 habitat variables(three divisions) were almost same as optimal condition, in the reach of reference stream where there are no stream crossing structures and channel alteration. Assessment results of reaches in urban rivers, where streams were improved on water-friendly recreation activities, appeared to be marginal condition. Because habitat environment got worse due to stream improvement works such as construction of weir for water landscape, stepping stones for walking, low water revetment and high water revetment, and high water channel. In addition, in the case of mid gradient stream, the frequency of riffles was small or not existed because the intervals of the river crossing structures was short. In the case of mild stream types, the diversity of the pool was damaged due to the deposition of sludge in the upstream pool of weir and the installation of low water revetment.

Rapid urbanization poses three major problems in urban streams. The first problem is the reduction of soil wetting from rainfall as the impervious area increases. Decrease in soil wetting causes serious distortion in the water cycle of urban streams. The second problem is the increase of non-point sources pollutants by urban land use, and the third problem is the combined sewer overflows in the old city center. Increased non-point sources pollutants and combined sewer overflows are associated with water cycle distortion, which increases water pollution in urban streams. In this study, EPA SWMM was constructed for the Busan Oncheon-stream watershed in order to suggest solutions for these three problems, and the bio-retention cells installation project was planned by benchmarking the actual projects in New York City. Water cycle improvement and reduction of non-point sources pollutants and combined sewer overflows for each project scenario were analyzed together with required budgets.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce two integrated urban development projects in Japan that take full advantage of flood-control reservoirs: the Tetsugakudo Park Collective Housing Development Project and the Koshigaya Lake Town Project. The former project - implemented cooperatively by the Tokyo metropolitan government in charge of river management, Shinjuku and Nakano wards (in Tokyo) responsible for park management, and the Urban Renaissance Agency, a housing project developer - set a significant precedent for three-dimensional river use by realizing the three-dimensional integrated development of a flood control reservoir, a park, and collective housing. The Koshigaya Lake Town Project, launched as a drastic storm water management measure for a low-lying area often plagued by flooding, has achieved a sustainable coexistence between the waterfront environment and the urban living environment, with an artificial flood-control reservoir as the core for urban development. This project is fully committed to environmental coexistence through the optimal use of local environmental resources, with the cooperation of the central government, Saitama Prefecture and Koshigaya City.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the runoff characteristics of non-point pollution sources in an urban watershed and determine the effectiveness of newly installed riverwater treatment system to reduce water pollution caused by storm runoff in the urban watershed. The results of this study showed that the levels of BOD5 and suspended solid were highly influenced by first-flush effect and the pollutant load of those two parameters were also very high in the urban watershed. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of riverwater treatment system to reduce the levels of BOD5 and suspended solid was relatively high, but those to reduce the levels of T-N and T-P was low, which needs some additional unit treatment process such as filtration and coagulation. Nonetheless, the riverwater treatment system tested was relatively simple in installation and operation, effective in removing many water pollutants and, most importantly, does not require much space as other treatment systems, so it could be an attractive alternative option to reduce riverwater pollution caused by storm runoff in urban watersheds.
In recent years, low impact development (LID) has emerged as an effective approach to control stormwater in an urban area, and watershed and stormwater managers need modeling tools to evaluate alternative plans for controlling stormwater. This study illustrates how to design and evaluate the effect of non-point pollutant management using SUSTAIN which is developed by USEPA. SUSTAIN can provide evaluating, selecting, and placing LID facilities in an urban catchment based on user-defined cost-effectiveness criteria. Also, this paper suggests a minimal methodology for estimating model parameters for modeling an ungauged urban catchment to reflect the situation of typical Korean urban interested catchments which are usually ungauged. In addition, the optimal length of various LID facilities and the optimal number of units in our test catchment are estimated.

The aim of this study is to identify the significant pollutant sources from the tributaries that are affecting the water quality of the study site, the Geum River and provide a solution to enhance the water quality. Multivariate statistical analysis modles such as cluster analysis, Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were applied to identify and prioritize the major pollutant sources of the two major tributaries, Gab-cheon and Miho-cheon, of the Geum River. PCA identifies three major pollutant sources for Gab-cheon and Miho-cheon, respectively. For Gab-cheon, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), urban, and agricultural pollutions are identified as major pollutant sources. For Miho-cheon, agricultural, urban, and forest land are identified as major pollutant sources. On the contrary, PMF identifies three pollutant sources in Gab-cheon, same as PCA result and two pollutant sources in Miho-cheon. Water quality control scenarios are formulated and improvement of water quality in the river locations are simulated and analyzed with the Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC) model. Scenario results were evaluated using a water quality index developed by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. PCA and PMF appears to be effective to identify water pollution sources for the Geum river and also its tributaries in detail and thus can be used for the development of water quality improvement alternative of the above water bodies.
Current cities encounter various types of water problems due to rapid urbanization and climate change. The increasing significance of urban water problems calls for the establishment of resilient alternatives to prevent and minimize social loss that results from these phenomena. As a background research for establishing resilient infrastructures for the mitigation of urban water problems, we evaluated the robustness of structural alternatives for urban flood as a representative case. Combining the robustness index (RI) and the cost index (CI), we suggested the robustness-cost index (RCI) as an indicator of the robustness of structural alternatives, and applied the index to assess the existing infrastructures and structural alternatives (i.e., sewer network expansion, additional storage tank construction, and green roof construction) at a site prone to floods located around Gangnam-station, Seoul, Korea. At a rainfall intensity frequency range of 2 to 20 years, the usage of a storage tank and a green roof showed relatively high RCI value, with a variation of an alternative showing greater RCI between the two depending on the size of design rainfall. For a rainfall intensity frequency of 30 years, installing a storage tank with some green roofing was the most resilient alternative based on the RCI value. We proposed strategies for establishing resilient infrastructures for the mitigation of urban floods by evaluating the robustness of existing infrastructures and selecting optimal structural alternatives with the consideration of scales of design disaster.
Water is an essential resource for humans, but fresh water becomes scarce due to population growth and contamination of limited resources. Membrane technology has been widely used for water treatment, and forward osmosis is a process which does not need high hydraulic pressure for the operation. However, there are needs for (1) development of novel draw solutes causing low internal concentration polarization and reverse salt flux for high water flux, and (2) development of economic recovery method of the draw solutes in the diluted draw solution. Previous researches on the draw solute include $NaHCO_3$ which can be regenerated by about $60^{\circ}C$ heating, sucrose which can make potable water without additional process, and magnetic nanoparticles which can be regenerated by external magnetic field. Using the principles of forward osmosis process, sea water desalination, wastewater treatment, refinement of proteins, energy generation using pressure retarded osmosis process, preparation of diluted fertilizer, and growing algae for biofuel can be conducted. This paper summarizes characteristics of ideal draw solutes, recovery method of the draw solutes, and various application examples.
