Analysis of Applicability of the Detention in Trunk Sewer for Reducing Urban Inundation (도시 내수침수 저감을 위한 간선저류지 적용성 분석)

  • The flood prevention capacity of drainage facilities in urban areas has weakened because of the increase in impervious surface areas downtown owing to rapid urbanization as well as localized heavy rains caused by climate change. Detention can be installed in trunk sewers and linked to existing drainage facilities for the efficient drainage of runoff in various urban areas with increasing stormwater discharge and changing runoff patterns. In this study, the concept of detention in trunk sewers, which are storage facilities linked to existing sewer pipes, was applied. By selecting a virtual watershed with a different watershed shape, the relationship between the characteristic factors of detention in the trunk sewer and the design parameters was analyzed. The effect of reducing stormwater runoff according to the installation location and capacity of the reservoir was examined. The relationship between the installation location and the capacity of the detention trunk sewer in the Dowon district of the city of Yeosu, South Korea was verified. The effects of the existing water runoff reduction facility and the detention trunk sewer were also compared and analyzed. As a result of analyzing the effects of reducing internal inundation, it was found that the inundation area decreased by approximately 66.5% depending on the installation location of the detention trunk sewer. The detention trunk sewer proposed in this paper could effectively reduce internal inundation in urban areas.

Ventilation Corridor Characteristics Analysis and Management Strategy to Improve Urban Thermal Environment - A Case Study of the Busan, South Korea - (도시 열환경 개선을 위한 바람길 특성 분석 및 관리 전략 - 부산광역시를 사례로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a ventilation corridor management plan to improve the thermal environment for Busan Metropolitan City. To this end, the characteristics of hot and cool spots in Busan were identified by conducting spatial statistical analysis, and thermal image data from Landsat-7 satellites and major ventilation corridors were analyzed through WRF meteorological simulation. The results showed the areas requiring thermal environment improvement among hot spot areas were Busanjin-gu, Dongnae-gu, industrial areas in Yeonje-gu and Sasang-gu, and Busan Port piers in large-scale facilities. The main ventilation corridor was identified as Geumjeongsan Mountain-Baekyangsan Mountain-Gudeoksan Mountain Valley. Based on the results, the ventilation corridor management strategy is suggested as follows. Industrial facilities and the Busan Port area are factors that increase the air temperature and worsen the thermal environment of the surrounding area. Therefore, urban and architectural plans are required to reduce the facility's temperature and consider the ventilation corridor. Areas requiring ventilation corridor management were Mandeok-dong and Sajik-dong, and they should be managed to prevent further damage to the forests. Since large-scale, high-rise apartment complexes in areas adjacent to forests interfere with the flow of cold and fresh air generated by forests, the construction of high-rise apartment complexes near Geumjeongsan Mountain with the new redevelopment of Type 3 general residential area should be avoided. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as basic data for urban planning and environmental planning in response to climate change in Busan Metropolitan City.

The Effect of Car-Free Pedestrian Street Policy on Urban Vibrancy Using Synthetic Control Method (통제집단합성법을 활용한 차 없는 거리 정책의 도시 활력 증진 효과 분석)

  • In line with increasing interest of climate change and pedestrian rights, the city of Seoul has been implementing car-free pedestrian street policies. The government and the private sector agreed to introduce carfree streets, expecting to increase the urban vibrancy and attract customers in the streets. However, studies that empirically analyze the effects of the policy are insufficient, and there are no studies that reevaluate the car-free pedestrian street policy after the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, this study evaluates the car-free pedestrian street policy at the commercial street, the Jongno 52-gil, using the synthetic control method. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the car-free pedestrian street policy was valid for enhancing urban vibrancy. Also, it was found that proper time interval is required to assess the policy since the peak increase of policy was observed in 3 months after the policy implementation. However, less than a year, the increase of the de facto population density on the Jongno 52-gil was revealed to be insignificant. In addition, the Jongno 52-gil was more vulnerable in the decrease of the de facto population density in the COVID-19 period than the synthetic control region. The results of this study suggest that long-term population inflow measures and flexible counterplan to contagious diseases are necessary in the car-free pedestrian street policy.

An Analysis of the Application Effect of LID Technology in Urban Inundation Using Two-Dimensional Model (2차원 모델을 이용한 도시침수지역에서의 LID기법 적용효과 분석)

  • The importance of preemptive flood preparation is growing as the importance of preparing for climate change increases due to record heavy rains in the Seoul metropolitan area in August 2022. Although it is responding to flood control through reservoirs and sediment sites, the government is preparing excellent spill reduction measures through a preliminary consultation system for Low Impact Development (LID). In this study, the depth of flooding was simulated when LID technologies were applied to the Sillim 2-drain region in Dorimcheon Stream basin, an urban stream, using XP-SWMM, a two-dimensional model. In addition, the analysis and applicability of the effect of reducing rainfall runoff for the largest rainfall in a day were reviewed, and it was judged to be effective as a method of reducing flooding in urban areas. Although there is a limitation in which the reduction effect is overestimated, it is thought that the LID technologies can be a significant countermeasure as a countermeasure for small-scale flooded areas where some flooding occurs after structural flooding measures are established.

Allometric Equations for Estimating the Carbon Storage of Maple Trees in an Urban Settlement Area (정주지 단풍나무의 탄소저장량 추정 상대생장식)

  • Using the logarithmic methods and the generalized method of moments (GMM), this study developed carbon storage equations for maple trees (Acer palmatum Thunb.) planted in an urban settlement area. A total of 20 maple trees of various ages and diameters were destructively harvested to determine their dry weight and carbon concentration by component. The allometric equations with DBH and DBH2×H as independent variables were developed to estimate the carbon storage for each tree component. The carbon concentration of tree components was the highest in stem wood (49.8%) and lowest in stem bark (46.5%). Allometric equations to estimate the carbon storage of tree components (stem, root, aboveground, and total) showed a similar coefficient of determinations (R2) between the allometric equations of the logarithmic method (0.7494-0.9036) and the GMM (0.7085-0.8847). However, the R2 values of the leaves and branches were in the range of 0.3027 to 0.6380, lower than those of the R2 of the other tree components. These results indicate that the carbon storage of maple trees growing in urban settlement areas can be efficiently predicted from the equations of GMM methods in the case of a small sample size or the heteroscedasticity of logarithmic equations.

Development of a Prediction Model for Personal Thermal Sensation on Logistic Regression Considering Urban Spatial Factors (도시공간적 요인을 고려한 로지스틱 회귀분석 기반 체감더위 예측 모형 개발)

  • This study analyzed the impact of urban spatial factors on the thermal environment. The personal thermal sensation was set as the unit of thermal environment to analyze its correlation with environmental factors. To collect data on personal thermal sensation, Living Lab was applied, allowing citizens to record their thermal sensation and measure the temperature. Based on the input points of the collected personal thermal sensation, nearby urban spatial elements were collected to build a dataset for statistical analysis. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the impact of each factor on personal thermal sensation. The analysis results indicate that the temperature is influenced by the surrounding spatial environment, showing a negative correlation with building height, greenery rate, and road rate, and a positive correlation with sky view factor. Furthermore, the road rate, sky view factor, and greenery rate, in that order, had a strong impact on perceived heat. The results of this study are expected to be utilized as basic data for assessing the thermal environment to prepare local thermal environment measures in response to climate change.

A Way for Creating Human Bioclimatic Maps using Human Thermal Sensation (Comfort) and Applying the Maps to Urban and Landscape Planning and Design (인간 열환경 지수를 이용한 생기후지도 작성 및 도시·조경계획 및 디자인에의 적용방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to find applicabilities of human bioclimatic maps, using human thermal sensation(comfort) in summer, with microclimatic in situ data and computer simulation results at the study site of downtown Daegu. This includes the central business district(CBD) area and two urban parks, the Debt Redemption Movement Memorial Park and the 2.28 Park, for urban and landscape planning and design. Climatic data and urban setting information for the analysis of human thermal sensation were obtained from in situ measurement and the geographic information system data. As a result, the CBD had higher air temperature than the parks when the wind speed was low. Relative humidities were opposite to the air temperature. Especially, same directional streets with local wind direction had lower air temperature than streets perpendicular to the wind direction. The most important climatic variable of human thermal sensation in summer was direct beam solar radiation. Also, creating shadow areas would be the most relevant method for modifying hot thermal environments in urban areas. The most effective method of creating shadow patterns was making a tree shadow over a pergola, and the second best one was making a tree shadow on the front of north directional building walls. Moreover, how to plant trees for creating shadow patterns was important as well as what kind of trees should be planted. The results of human thermal sensation were warm to very hot at sunny areas and neutral to warm at shaded ones. At the sunny areas, wide, squared shape areas had a little bit higher thermal sensation than those of narrow streets. The albedo change of building walls 0.15 and ground surface 0.1 could change 1/6 of a sensation level at the shaded areas and 1/3 at the sunny ones. These microclimatic approaches will be useful to find appropriate methods for modifying thermal environments in urban areas.

Analysis of Urban Growth Pattern and Characteristics by Administrative District Hierarchy : 1985~2005 (행정구역 위계별 도시성장 패턴 및 특성 분석 : 1985~2005를 중심으로)

  • Rapid urbanization is causing environmental and ecological damage, development thoughtless for the environment, and social and economical issues. It is important to grasp urban growth situations and characteristics, reflect them, and establish a policy for the solution of issues pursuant to urbanization and the sustainable and efficient development of national land. This research aims to be used as basic data in establishing an urban policy by analyzing the situations and characteristics of urban growth for the past 20 years in our entire country rather than an existing district. For this, some urban districts were sampled using a 1980s and 2000s version of land cover map produced by Ministry of Environment, and then pattern analysis for urban growth by administrative district ranks was conducted using GIS and a statistical technique. As a result, the development zone area after 1980s has increased by 2.5 times as compared to that before 1980s, and especially in the farm villages neighboring the national capital region, it has increased by 21.2 times. Special cities and metropolitan cities were developed at the districts being low in altitude, close to the principal road and the major downtown, high in road ratio, and restricted environmentally, ecologically and legally, and were diverted from mountains, forests and grassland to urban land. On the other hand, farm villages neighboring a large city, farm villages neighboring the national capital region, and local farm villages were developed at the districts being high in altitude, far from the principal road and the major downtown, low in road ratio, and not restricted environmentally, ecologically and legally, and were diverted from farmland to urban land. That is, it can be seen that urban development has been actively realized despite the unfavorable topographical conditions in the suburban districts due to lack of available land and various regulations and policies as urban growth around big cities expands.

Prediction of Carbonation Progress for Concrete Structures Considering Change of Atmospheric Environment (대기환경변화를 고려한 콘크리트 구조물의 중성화 예측)

  • The most common deterioration cause of concrete structures in urban environment is carbonation. Recently, the $CO_2$ concentration and temperature at atmosphere is sharply increased with time due to global warming phenomena. In this study, the climate scenario IS92a, which was suggested by the IPCC, is used to consider temperature and atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration change in the model of service life prediction. The modified mathematical solution, which was based on the Fick's 1st law of diffusion, was used to reflect concrete materials properties such as the degree of hydration of concrete with elapsed time, and important parameters, which associated with deterioration rate. The techniques of service life prediction are developed introducing the method of reliability and stochastic concept to consider microclimatic condition in Seoul, South Korea. From the result of service life prediction, concrete containing high W/C ratio is shown fast carbonation rate due to $CO_2$ concentration increase. It is concluded that the deterioration of concrete structures due to carbonation is insignificant problem on the conditions that below W/C 55%, well curing concrete.

Policy case study for urban waterfront regeneration -Focused on Han River management foundation plan and London Thames gateway regeneration project- (도시 수변공간 재생을 위한 정책 사례연구 -한강변 관리 기본계획과 런던 템즈 게이트웨이 광역 재생사업을 중심으로-)

  • In 2007, London Thames Gateway delivery plan was started, and it was in progress to solve climate change, population density, housing problems, green space, regional imbalances, and transportation issues from east London and Kent to Essex. The plan was carried out faithfully local autonomy enlargement of local governments. This case is evaluated as a successful case of waterfront regeneration with well balanced on development and conservation. This study concludes as follows by comparing with this case and a new Han River management foundation plan. First, Seoul's new plan needs to change to diffuse thinking on comprehensively understanding. Second, local and central government, which are adjacent to Han River, need management scheme in cooperation. Third, the countermeasures for solving traffic problems in Seoul are required through the provision of transportation method to take advantage of the waterfront.
