  • This paper aims to present the design and performance evaluation of a counter-rotating tidal turbine using CFD and to compare its performance with single rotor. The device scale is 10kW and the rotating part consists of two rotors which rotate in opposite direction. Compared with conventional single rotor, the counter-rotating system shows higher power efficiency at high stream velocity but lower efficiency at low stream velocity. The added counter-rotated rotor together helps improve the energy absorption capacity but has influence on the upstream rotor that reduces its performance. In terms of power capture, the designed counter-rotating tidal turbine is more advantageous in high speed tidal condition.

  • The objective of present work is to use numerical simulation to investigate the complex three-dimensional and secondary flow structures developed at the inlet and impeller in a centrifugal pump at design and off-design points. The pump impeller is shrouded with 6 backward swept blades and with a specific speed of 0.8574. The characteristic of the pump is measured experimentally with straight and curved intake sections. Numerical computation is carried out to investigate the pump inlet flow structures and subsequently the flow field within the centrifugal pump. The numerical results showed that strong interaction between the impeller eye and intake section. Secondary flow structure occurs upstream at the pump inlet has great influence on the pump performance and flow structure within the impeller.

  • We discuss simulation results concerning the performance of the TCP protocol when running over high-speed HFC networks. Hybrid Fiber Coaxial are likely to provide fast and cost effective sup-port to a variety of applications including Video on demand, interactive computer games, and internet-type applications such as Webbrowsing, ftp, and telephony. Since most of these applications, use TCP as the transport later protocol, the key to their success largely depends on the effectiveness of the TCP protocol. In all simulation scenarios the TCP traffic is maxed with some background traffic whose level is taken as a variable parameter. Both the background traffic and TCP traffic are either unshaped, or shaped according to the GCRA algorithm. The effect of the background traffic on the TCP protocol performance is discussed varying the buffering capacity with nodes as well as the peak bit rate that each TCP connection is allowed to use.

  • This paper addresses a new technique of measuring the mean flow velocity over the cross sectional area of the pipe using sound field reconstruction. When fluid flows in the pipe and two plane waves propagate oppositely through the medium, the flow velocity causes the change of wave number of the plane waves. The wave number of the positive going plane wave decreases and that of negative going one increases in comparison to static medium in the pipe. Theoretical backgrounds of this method are introduced in detail and the measurement of mean flow velocity using the sound field reconstruction is not affected by velocity profile upstream of microphones.

  • An in-house supersonic ejector was designed to ensure low pressure and high speed scavenging of resonating cavity of chemical lasers. For given primary flow condition, 100g/s secondary mass flow rate was observed at the design pressure. Performance validation of a supersonic ejector system along with an investigation of effects of supersonic diffuser was conducted. Placement of diffuser at the secondary inlet further reduced diffuser upstream pressure to 1/4-1/5 relieving the local to the primary supply unit. In order to increase the secondary flow, we put two ejectors capable of removing 50g/s each of secondary flows together to deal with higher mass flow. Test of the parallel unit demonstrated the secondary flow rate was proportional to the numbers of individual units that were brought together. Additionally, flow calculations with a commercial code were carried out in every case of experiment and compared with results.

  • A program to analyze the performance characteristics of a hydraulic shimmy damper for automotive steering system was developed in this study. Dimensionless mathematical equations of the dynamics of shimmy damper for forward and reverse fluid flows were derived respectively and incorporated into the Simulink models. The program was validated by comparing the results of simulation and experiments for various frequencies of upstream ripple pressures into the damper. Low-pass filter characteristics of the shimmy damper at reverse flow was demonstrated which means that the shimmy damper could alleviate the high speed ripple pressures induced by the unbalance oscillation of tire in vehicle driving. The parameter sensitivity analysis was also conducted to identify the dominant parameters for the damper performance.

  • An abrupt increase of duct cross-section is frequently encountered in pressure reducing devices, valves of internal combustion engines and in gas pipelines. Supersonic flow in a rectangular duct passing an abrupt increase of cross-section is studied numerically. The behavior of base pressure of the dead-air region at sudden enlargement of the duct is clarified. This investigation concerns the determination of the base pressure, which is independent of the size of the enlarged part. Several flow patterns are identified with different enlargements according to the ratio between the downstream ambient pressure and the upstream reservoir pressure. Base pressure and the resulting shock-structure are highly depending on the size of duct enlargement. For a given duct, base pressure tends to minimum for a particular pressure ratio. In addition, the locations of secondary separation and reattachment points of the jet plume are found with respect to different duct enlargements.

  • By using the nonlinear aerostatic stability theory together with the method of mean wind decomposition, a method for nonlinear aerostatic stability analysis is proposed for long-span suspension bridges under yaw wind. A corresponding program is developed considering static wind load nonlinearity and structural nonlinearity. Taking a suspension bridge with three towers and double main spans as an example, the full range aerostatic instability is analyzed under wind at different attack angles and yaw angles. The results indicate that the lowest critical wind speed of aerostatic instability is gained when the initial yaw angle is greater than $0^{\circ}$, which suggests that perhaps yaw wind poses a disadvantage to the aerostatic stability of a long span suspension bridge. The results also show that the main span in upstream goes into instability first, and the reason for this phenomenon is discussed.

  • HOX genes are transcription factors that play important roles in body patterning and cell fate specification during normal development. In previous study, we found aberrant overexpression of HOXB5 in breast cancer tissues and cell lines, and demonstrated that HOXB5 is important in regulation of cell proliferation, tamoxifen resistance, and invasiveness through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Although the relationship between HOXB5 and phenotypic changes in MCF7 breast cancer cells has been studied, the molecular function of HOXB5 as a transcription factor remains unclear. IL-6 has been reported to be involved in not only inflammation but also cancer progression, which is characterized by the increase of growth speed and invasiveness of tumor cells. In this study, we selected Interleukin-6 (IL-6) as HOXB5 putative downstream target gene and discovered that HOXB5 transcriptionally up-regulated the expression of IL-6 in HOXB5 overexpressing MCF7 cells. The upstream region (~1.2 kb) of IL-6 promoter turned out to contain several putative HOX consensus binding sites. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay confirmed that HOXB5 directly binds to the promoter region of IL-6 and positively regulated the expression of IL-6. These data all together, indicate that HOXB5 promotes IL-6 transcription by actively binding to the putative binding sites located in the upstream region of IL-6, which enable to increase its promoter activity in MCF7 breast cancer cells.
