  • Collapse shape of tunnel roof in layered Hoek-Brown rock media is investigated within the framework of upper bound theorem. The traditional collapse mechanism for homogeneous stratum is no longer suitable for the present analysis of roof stability, and it would be necessary to propose a curve failure mode to describe the velocity discontinuity surface in layered media. What is discussed in the paper is that the failure mechanism of tunnel roofs, consisting of two different functions, is proposed for layered rock media. Then it is employed to investigate the impending roof failure. Based on the nonlinear Hoek-Brown failure criterion, the collapse volume of roof blocks are derived with the upper bound theorem and variational principle. Numerical calculations and parametric analysis are carried out to illustrate the effects of different parameters on the shape of failure mechanism, which is of overriding significance to the stability analysis of tunnel roof in layered rock media.

  • Closed-die forging of spline was analysed using the upper bound elemental technique, Two different forging methods, denoted here as side extrusion-forging and upset forging, were proposed, The kinematically admissible velocity fields for each of the forging methods, which could express trapezoidal, rectangular and serration tooth forms, were presented. Upper bounds to forging loads and deformed configurations were predicted using the velocity fields. Theoretical results were compared with experimental ones. Experiments with lead were carried out at room temperature where grease was used as a lubricant. The present investigation revealed that analytical forging loads were reduced by using the side extrusion-forging but the upset forging could improve configuration of the final forged splines.

  • In analyzing the plastic flow of axisymmetric tube extrusion a new method of formulation using the stream function approach and upper-bound theorem is proposed which permits the prediction of plastically deformed zone in analytic expression as well as metal flow. It is shown that the formulation proposed in this work covers the solid extrusion and tube extrusion in axisymmetric case. The effect of some process parameters such as area reduction, the ratio of radii(inner radius to outer radius) and friction factor on extrusion pressure, deformation zone and plastic flow through stream-lined dies has been studied. The presented theoretical analysis can be effectively used for the prediction of deformation zone and plastic flow.

  • The study is concerned with an analysis on the hydrofilm extrusion through conical dies. The upper bound method is adopted for the analysis of metal deformation in connection with hydrodynamic lubrication theory for the lubricant in order to determine the extrusion pressure for some variables such as reduction of area, die cone angle. In the upper bound method, a kinematically admissible velocity field is found by assuming proper streamlines and applying the flow function concept to the region of plastic deformation. The effect of work hardening is incorporated approximately by calculating the strains at the exit of the die. The experiments are carried out with the commercially pure aluminium for some chosen variables at room temperature. It is shown that the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

  • The torsional forward extrusion is the process that is executed by punch travel and die rotation. The advantages of having the die rotation on this process are that forming load can be reduced and optimal die angle can be increased. This provides a possibility to extrude cold-worded material where a large extrusion force and die angle are required. Also, this process can improve the material properties owing to the high deformation and uniform strain distribution. The forming load and optimal die angle of this process are determined by the upper bound analysis using stream function and the optimization technique. To verify the theoretical result, we have carried out experiments and FE simulations using DEFORM3D.

  • Forging of spur gears has been investigated by means of upper-bound method. The term forging means forging of spur gears with solid cylindrical billets, hollow billets with flat punch. Kinematically admissbile velocity field for forging of spur gears has been proposed in this study. The 1/2 pitch of spur gear has been divided into seven dieformation regions, wherein, an involute curve has been introduced to represent the shape of die profile. Especially neutral surface has been introduced intor forging of hollow gears from hollow billets. By using the kinematically admissible velocity field, the powder requirements and suitable conditions for forging fo spur gears were successfully calculated with numerical method. According to the analysis , the acceptable number of teeth for forging of spur gears is from 15 to 20.

  • The upper bound analysis by stream function is used to study the torsional forward extrusion. The torsional forward extrusion process not only reduces forming load but also increase optimal die angle. Optimal die angle is determined by the optimization technique. The advantages of this process are that the low capacity of pressing machine can be used and the process with a large die angle can be applied. To verify the theoretical result, we have carried out experiments using model material (plasticine) and FE simulations using DEFORM3D.

  • In this study, a extrusion process with torsion of the bottom die is investigated to improve the forming performance of conventional extrusion process. In the experiment, plasticine is used as a model material. The results of experiments are compared with the two numerical methods, the Experiment and the Finite Element Method(FEM). An attempt is made to link programs incorporating with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM software, DEFORM-3D a useful package. Numerical result is compared with experimental one. These results show that the torsional extrusion process is very useful process because this process can obtain the homogenous deformations.

  • In wire drawing, aterial deformation is concentrated on the surface of the drawn wire because of surface contact with the drawing die. Therefore, strain varies from the center to the surface of the drawn wire. In this study, based on the upper bound method, an effective strain prediction method from the center to the surface of a drawn wire was proposed. Using the proposed method, the effective strain of the drawn wire was calculated verify the proposed prediction method, the predicted effective strain was compared with the result of finite element analysis.

  • To diversify the area of application of UBET to the analysis of ring rolling which produces rings having more complex cross-sectional configuration, an element of triangular cross-section has been introduced and the corresponding kinematically admissible velocity field has been derived while considering the material flow between neighboring elements. The theoretical perdictions in roll torque and profile formation show good agreement with the experiments. The effect of process parameters such as feed rate and taper angle of the roll groove has been discussed.
