  • This paper proposes a novel method to perform a quantitative analysis of message complexity and applies this method in comparing the message complexity among the mobile ad hoc network (MANET) address autoconfiguration protocols (AAPs). To obtain the upper bound of the message complexity of the protocols, the O-notation of a MANET group of N nodes has been applied. The message complexity of the single node joining case in Strong DAD, Weak DAD with proactive routing protocols (WDP), Weak DAD with on-demand routing protocols (WDO), and MANETconf has been derived as n(mO(N)+O(t)), n(O(N)+O(t)), n(O(N)+2O(t)), and nO((t+1)N)+O(N)+O(2) respectively. In order to verify the bounds, analytical simulations that quantify the message complexity of the address autoconfiguration process based on the different coflict probabilities are conducted.

  • The present paper evaluates seismic bearing capacity of rock masses subjected to loads of strip footings using the upper bound method. A general formula was proposed to evaluate the seismic bearing capacity considering both the horizontal and vertical accelerations of the earthquake and the effects of footing embedment depth simultaneously. Modified Hoek-Brown failure criterion was employed for the rock mass. Some comparisons were made with the available solutions and the finite element numerical models to show the accuracy of the developed upper bound formulations. The obtained results show significant improvement compared to the other available solutions. By increasing the horizontal earthquake acceleration from 0.1 to 0.3, the bearing capacity was reduced by up to 39%, while the effect of the vertical earthquake acceleration depends on its direction. An upward acceleration in the range of zero to 0.2 results in an increase in the bearing capacity by up to 24%, while the downward earthquake acceleration has an adverse effect. Also, by increasing the embedment depth of the footing from zero to 5 times the footing width, the value of seismic bearing capacity was raised about 86%. The obtained results were presented as design tables for use in practical applications.

  • This paper presents robustness propertis of the Kalman Fiter and the associated LQG/LTR method for linear time-invariant output-delayed systems. It is shown that, even for minimum phase plants, the LQG/LTR method can not recover the target loop transfer function. Instead, an upper bound on the recovery error is obtained using an upper bound of the solution of the Kalman filter Riccati equations. Finally, some dual properties between output-delayed systems and input-delayed systems are exploited.

  • Analytic and experimental methods have been used for the characterization of flow behavior of semi-solid Al2024 alloy. Backward extrusion experimnet was chosen to avoid the crack on the unconstrained surface. The material constants for the flow stress by the upper bound technique that agreed with experimental results were determined. The various material constants obtained for al temperature range above the solidus temperature have been fitted and represented in the function of temperature and solid fraction. The obtained result has good agreement only in the high solid fraction.

  • Forging of trapezoidal spline, serration and square spline with solid cylindrical billets and hollow one has been investigated by means of upper bound method. Kinematically admissible velocity fields for forging of splines have been proposed in this study. The half pitch of spline has been divided into several deformation regions. The neutral surface is introduced into forging of splines with flat punch and, for each step, it is assumed as a circle with its radius $r_n$. Upper bound solutions obtained by proposed kinematically admissible velocity fields are useful to predict the loads for forging of splines.

  • A modified theoretical analysis of the ballistic perforation on the double and multi-layered armour plates using an upper bound method has been presented in this paper. A modified model based on the suggestion of the Awerbuch-bodner model has been adapted and extended into double and multi-layered armour plates when the plugging type of penetration has been occurred. The residual projectile speed, ballistic limit velocity and contact time during the penetration process have been derived from the equation of motion at each stage.

  • In analyzing the axisymmetric backward extrusion process a new method of analysis using upper-bound theorem is proposed in which the plastic zone and dead metal zone cam be predicted. Experiments are carried out with commercial aluminum. The metal flow on the meridional plane has been visualized experimentally by using the gridded specimens. It is shown that the theoretical results both in extrusion load and deformation pattern are in good agreement with the experimental results and they can be used for effective punch and die design to consider various process parameters in axisymmetric backward extrusion.

  • Limit analysis is based on the duality theorem which equates the least upper bound to the greatest lower bound. In this study, limit analysis of axisymmetric forming problem with workhardening materials is formulated by minimizing the upper bound functional and finite element program is developed for forward estrusion. Limit loads, velocity and flow line fields are directly obtained under various process conditions and deformation characteristics such as strains, strain rates and grid distortion are obtained from the optimum velocity components by numerical calculation. The experimental observation was carried out for extrusion and compared with computed results. The good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is shown that the developed programming is very effective for the analysis of axisymmetric extrusion.

  • A problem of signal transmitted and received in OFDM systems is considered. In particular, an efficient solution to the problem of blind channel estimation based on Maximum Likelihood (ML) principle has been investigated. The paper proposes a new upper-bound cost, used in conjunction with a standard branch and bound integer programming technique for solving the ML problem. The tighter upper-bound cost exploits a finite-alphabet property of the transmitted signal. The proposed upper-bound cost was found to greatly speed up the ML algorithm, thus reducing computational complexity. Experimental results and discussion are included.

  • In this paper, we investigate a set-membership identification approach to the quantification of an upper bound of model uncertainty in frequency domain, which is required in the H$_{\infty}$ robust control system design. First we formulate this problem as a set-membership identification of a nominal model error in the presence f unknown noise input with unknown bound, while the ordinary set-membership approaches assume that an upper bound of the uncertain input is known. For this purpose, the proposed algorithm includes the estimation of the bound of the uncertain input. thus the proposed method can obtain the hard bound of the model error in frequency domain as well as a parametric lower-order nominal model. Finally numerical simulation results are shown to confirm the validity of the presented algorithm..
