In the mobile computing environment, caching data at the client's side is a useful technique for improving the performance. For caching to be effective, the cache contents must be consistent with those stored in the server. That is, unfortunately, difficult to enforce due to the frequent disconnection and mobility of clients. In the literature, the basic approach adopted is for the sever to periodically broadcast invalidation reports(IRs) that contain information about objects that have been updated recently. However IR-based cache maintenance scheme has a main drawback. Any client who has been disconnected longer than w seconds has to discard all cached items even some of them may still be valid. In this paper, we propose two main schemes which can adapt clients' losing IR messages by long disconnection. First, the client sends its disconnection time when connection is re-established, and the server uses this information to decide the size of broadcast window w dynamically. Second, the server maintains IR messages for a given period of time and a client who has been disconnected longer than w seconds can verify its cache consistency individually. Compared to previous IR-based schemes, our schemes can significantly reduce cache missing and uplink request and improve the throughput by reducing response time.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is expected to offer local area services with low transmit power and short link distance, even not via any infrastructures. These advantages will lead to the deployment of D2D systems in a massive scale, where the order of magnitude of D2D user density is higher than that of cellular user density. Network-assisted D2D systems, where D2D resources are managed by cellular networks, are unable to support the large number of D2D devices, due to the signaling overhead for control signals. In this case, no coordination can be an answer. This paper considers uncoordinated D2D systems, which is implemented with a number of D2D devices in a large scale. By analyzing the transmission capacity of D2D systems, we found a feasibility condition under which the uncoordinated D2D communications possibly coexist within cellular networks, sharing the uplink spectrum. In addition, we provide guidelines for the operational points of massive D2D communications, giving some knowledge about proper transmit power level and link distance of uncoordinated D2D.

In this paper, we propose a grouping technique for the SDD(Synchronous Digital Duplexing) based on OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access). The SDD has advantages of increasing data efficiency and flexibility of resource since SDD can transmit uplink signals and downlink signals simultaneously by using mutual time information and mutual channel information, obtained during mutual ranging process. However, the SDD has a disadvantage of requiring additional CS to maintain orthogonality of OFDMA symbols when the sum of mutual time difference and mutual channel length between AP(access point) and SS(subscriber station) or among SSs are larger than CP length. In order to minimize the length of CS for the case of requiring additional CS in SDD, we proposes a grouping technique which controls transmit timing and receive timing of AP and SS in a cell by classifying them into groups. Performances of the proposed grouping technique are evaluated by computer simulation.

In this paper, we propose mitigation techniques using time-domain shortening filter (TSF) and frequency-domain shortening filter (FSF) to overcome inter-block interference (IBn and inter-carrier interference (ICn due to the time difference of arrival (TDoA) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) between downlink and uplink signals from access point (AP) and subscriber station (SS) in synchronous digital duplexing (SDD)/orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems for indoor wireless communication. The proposed TSF and FSF maximize SIR for shortening in time (SIRST) and SINR for shortening in frequency (SINRSF), respectively, by using channel impulse responses and timing information among stations, obtained from mutual ranging procedure. It is verified by computer simulation that the proposed TSF and FSF reduce effectively the effects of IBI and ICI in the SDD/OFDMA systems.
Broadcast scheme has been widely researched for efficient data delivery in the mobile environment because the downlink capacity of a mobile client is much greater than the uplink capacity, and the power of a mobile client is limited. In the proposed scheme, the index lets the client know when data items would be broadcasted and enables the client to minimize the tuning time and power consumption. Single channel index schemes are fit to flat broadcast that performs well when all the broadcasted data items are accessed with the same probability whereas the multi-disk broadcast scheme is proper when the data access distribution is skewed. The existing index schemes, however, cannot work on the Multi-disk broadcast scheme because they cannot point the replicating data items in a broadcast cycle. This paper proposes a Multi-disk Exponential Index (MDEI) which is a single channel index scheme fit to Multi-disk broadcast scheme. Because MDEI scheme organizes a separate index for each disk, it functions with multi-disk broadcast, resulting in a greater reduction of average access latency than that of other flat-broadcast index schemes when the data access distribution is skewed. The performance evaluation showed that MDEI has a good performance when data access distribution is skewed. MDEI has short average access latency and not much average tuning time when the data access distribution is skewed.
The integration of 3G networks and WLANs as complementary has been begun to attract much attention in industry as well as academia. This topic is becoming a burning issue, and one of the key questions which it raises is how to support a seamless vertical handoff. This paper introduces a new network interface selection algorithm for energy-efficient vertical handoff in tightly coupled systems capable of supporting seamless handoff. Our proposed scheme, Wise Interface Selection (WISE) switches the active network interface, after taking into consideration the characteristics of the network interface cards and the current level of data traffic, with the cooperation of the mobile terminals and network. Network interface switching operates independently on both the downlink and the uplink for the purpose of energy conservation. We show through simulation that less energy is consumed with WISE than when only a 3G network or WLAN interface is used, resulting in a longer lifetime for the mobile terminals. In the case of TCP connections, additional throughput gain can also be obtained.

The voice traffic is one of the most important real-time objects in WATM(Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks. In this paper, we propose a new MAC(Medium Access'Control) protocol for the efficienttransmission of voice traffic over WATM networks in the multimedia environment and compare the performanceto existing similar protocols. The new protocol separates the reservation slot period for voice and that for data toguarantee some level of QoS(Quality of Service) in voice traffic. This is denoted by a slot assignment functiondepending on the frame size. According to the characteristics of voice traffic which is repeatedly in silent states, the protocol allocates voice reservation request slots dynamically with respect to the number of silent(off state)voice sources and also sends the first block of talkspurt restarted after silent period with a reservation requestslot to reduce the access delay. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol has better performance than Slotted Aloha in bandwidthefficiency, and can serve a certain level of QoS by the given slot assignment function even when the number ofvoice terminals varies dynamically. This means we can observe that the new MAC protocol is much better thanthe NC-PRMA(None Collision-Packet Reservation Multiple Access) protocol.

While most of the public radio spectrum bands are allocated to licensed users, cognitive radio has been considered as a promising technology for the efficient spectrum utilization. In this new technology, secondary users opportunistically use the temporally underutilized licensed bands as long as they do not give the harmful interference to primary users. In this paper, we focus on the infra-structured network condition in which the cognitive radio network consists of a cognitive radio base station and multiple secondary users. Upon detecting a primary user, the entire cognitive radio network generally switches to another available channel, even if most of the on-going communications still does not interfere with the primary user. Moreover, the network re-entry process on a new channel causes the service disruption of the on-going communications. For this reason, in this paper, we propose a relaying scheme for efficient frequency usage, in which the secondary user out of the interference range of a primary user performs as a relaying node for the secondary user possibly interfering with a primary user. The entire spectrum switching is not required, and thus, we can avoid the service disruption of the on-going communications as much as possible.

In this paper, we propose a coarse and fine frequency synchronization method which is suitable for the 3GPP(3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE(Long Term Evolution) FDD(Frequency Division Duplexing) / TDD(Time Division Duplexing) dual mode system. In general, PSS(Primary Synchronization Signal) correlation based estimation method and CP(Cyclic Prefix) correlation based tracking loop are applied for coarse and fine frequency synchronization in 3GPP LTE OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system, respectively. However, the conventional coarse frequency synchronization method has performance degradation caused by fading channel and squaring loss. Also, the conventional fine frequency synchronization method cannot guarantee stable operation in TDD mode because of signal power difference between uplink and downlink subframe. Therefore, in this paper, we propose enhanced coarse and fine frequency synchronization methods which can estimate more accurately in multi-path fading channel and high speed channel environments and has stable operation for TDD frame structure, respectively. By computer simulation, we show that the proposed methods outperform the conventional methods, and verify that the proposed frequency synchronization method can guarantee stable operation in 3GPP LTE FDD/TDD dual mode downlink receiver.

The code division multiple access(CDMA) system capacity is limited by the amount of interference of the system. To reduce the unnecessary interference, this paper proposes optimized cell identification codes for site selection diversity transmission(SSDT) power control in wideband code division multiple access system of third generation partnership project(3GPP). The main objective of SSDT power control is to transmit on the downlink from the primary cell, and thus reducing the interference caused by the multiple transmission. In order to select a primary cell, each cell is assigned a temporary identification(ID) and user equipment(UE) periodically informs a primary cell ID to the connecting cells during soft handover. The non-primary cells selected by UE do not transmit the dedicated physical data channel(DPDCH) to reduce the interference. A major issue with the SSDT technology is the impact of uplink symbol errors on its performance. These errors can corrupt the primary ID code and this may lead to wrong decoding in the base station receivers. The proposed SSDT cell ID codes are designed to minimize the problem and to be easily decoded using simple fast Hadamard transformation(FHT) decoder.
