Recently, the construction of coastal structures and high-rise structures against the horizontal and uplift forces increases with the developing the coastal developments. Especially the application of belled tension pile as foundation type to effectively resist uplift force is increasing in coastal structures. However, research on pullout resistance of belled tension pile has been limited and not yet been fully performed. Therefore, the pullout load tests of belled tension piles in four overseas sites were performed, then the bearing capacity, characteristics on load-displacement of piles and load distribution considering skin friction were investigated in this paper. In addition, the limit pullout bearing capacity calculated by the three-dimensional finite element analysis and theoretical methods were compared with values of in-situ test.

This study was carried out to analyze the effect of wind load on the structural stability of a container crane according to the change of the boom shape using wind tunnel test and provided a container crane designer with data which can be used in a wind resistance design of a container crane assuming that a wind load at 75m/s wind velocity is applied on a container crane. Data acquisition conditions for this experiment were established in accordance with the similarity. The scale of a container crane dimension, wind velocity and time were chosen as 1/200, 1/13.3 and 1/15. And this experiment was implemented in an Eiffel type atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel with $11.25m^2$ cross-section area. Each directional drag and overturning moment coefficients were investigated and uplift forces at each supporting point due to the wind load were analyzed.
In this study, the load transfer mechanism of tendon-grout interface of rock anchors has been examined through a series of static pull-out tests conducted on the model rock anchors constructed in the natural and artificial rock masses of granite and concrete, respectively. Several rock masses with horizontal discontinuities have been prepared to study the effects of weak planes on the shear stress distribution in tendon-grout interface. As a result, for the rock anchors constructed in the rock mass without discontinuities, stress concentration occurs on the upper part of the tendon-grout interface. On the contrary, as the frequency or the number of discontinuities increases, the shear stress distribution along the depth tends to be uniform. Also, an experimental equation about shear stress distribution between tendon-grout interface can be made by the regression of test results. The shear stresses computed from the experimental results between the rock surface and the depth of 2~3 times the tendon diameter are smaller than those from theory. Below the depth, the reverse can be observed.

The use of pile reinforcement is considered as one of the most promising techniques for improving load carrying capacity of piles in offshore area. In this study, to consider the horizontal and uplift bearing capacity of submerged breakwater bearing pile, exclusive analysis on load-transfer behaviour of pile was conducted. First of all, check the reinforcing effect from the three-dimensional finite element method, and estimate load transfer curve (ground reaction force). Based on these results, the reinforcing effect was quantified by estimating the coefficients of horizontal and uplift reinforcement of reinforced piles. Load transfer function with consideration of the reinforcing effect was proposed from estimated coefficients. A comparison of the analysis using the proposed load transfer function with three-dimensional finite element analysis has resulted that the proposed load transfer function is displaying good accuracy of predicting behavior of the load transfer between the pile and soil reinforcement. Interpretation of the submerged structure by applying a load transfer function considering the reinforcing effect, has shown that the reinforced pile's shear, bending moment and displacement are less than that of non-reinforced piles, while the subgrade reaction modulus arises greater. Thus, it is expected to be relatively cost effective in terms of design.
In this study, vertical loading tests were conducted to investigate the nonlinear behaviors of the fastening systems that have generally been used in the concrete track of domestic railway lines. Nonlinear load-displacement curve models were derived based on the test results. The uplift forces generated in the fastening systems were evaluated by applying the derived nonlinear models as well as the existing linear models. The influence of the factors on the maximum uplift force of the fastening system was analyzed through a parameter study on the distance between neighboring sleepers, the horizontal distance between the center of the bearing and the nearest fastening system from the deck end, and the height of the bridge girder. From the evaluation results it is known that, for economical track and bridge design, due to deck end deformation, it is necessary to consider the nonlinear behavior of the fastening system in the calculation of the uplift force of the fastening systems.
Pack micropiles were recently developed to improve pile capacity of general micropiles. Pack micropiles were made by warping thread bar or steel pipe of general micropile by geotexlile pack and grouting inside the pack with pressure. According to the pressure, the boring hole could be enlarged. A series of pile uplift tests were performed on three micropiles. Two out of the three piles were the pack micropiles and the other was the general micropile, in which a thread bar was used in the boring hole. According to the pressure applied to the pack micropiles, the diameter of boring hole was enlarged from 152 mm to 220 mm. Unit skin friction mobilized on side surfaces of micropiles increased with displacement of pile head and reached on a constant value, which represents that the relative displacement between piles (or thread bar) and soils was reached on critical state. And the uplift resistance of pack micropile was higher than that of general micropile. Two reasons can be considered: One is that the frictional surface increases due to enlarging diameter of boring holes and the other is that the unit skin friction could increase due to compressing effect of surrounding soils by soil displacement as much as the enlarging volume of boring hole. The compression effect appeared at deeper layer rather than surface layer. The unit skin friction mobilized on micropiles with small diameter was higher than the ones on large bored piles.

In this study compressive and tensile load tests have been performed to investigate reinforcing effect and load transfer mechanism of small diameter piles installed in the foundation soil for the marine suspension bridge. Load tests were carried out on steel plate with diameters of 50cm, 100cm and 150cm varying loads starting from 39 tons up to 314 tons. Small diameter piles were proved to behavior like as friction piles and loads were not transmitted to the bottom of piles. From pull-out tests, the uplift capacity of small diameter piles was largely influenced by reinforcing materials compared to frictional resistance between piles and adjacent soils. The bearing capacity of small diameter piles appeared to be higher than the ultimate bearing capacity evaluated using static formulae. The load carrying capacity of small diameter piles was superior to the bored piles with a similar size. Thus, ultimate bearing capacity estimated from static formulae can provide conservative designs and thereby resulting in economic disadvantages. A further study to accumulate data regarding various soil conditions is recommended for an improved estimation of bearing capacity of piles with small diameter.

This paper is an experimental result of performing the prototype of anchor tests in field to investigate the ultimate uplifting capacity of permanent anchor embedded in weathered rock. For prototype of actual anchor test in situ, four grouted anchors having various anchor lengths were installed in field and their ultimate uplift capacities were obtained by analyzing test results of load-displacement curves obtained from field uplift tests. On the other hand, creep tests, applying pull-out loading at the stage of the maximum loading during 15 minutes, were performed to investigate ultimate resisting capacity of anchor so that the values of creep rate at the ultimate loading conditions were evaluated. Dial gauges were installed on the surface of ground to measure the vertical displacement distribution from the anchor so that the failure mechanism of permanent anchor embedded in weathered rock and failure boundary of ground during application of loading were evaluated.
One of the main parameters that affect the design of suction caisson-supported offshore structures is uplift behavior. Pull-out of suction caissons is profoundly utilized as the offshore wind turbine foundations accompany by a tensile resistance that is a function of a complex interaction between the caisson dimensions, geometry, wall roughness, soil type, load history, pull-out rate, and many other parameters. In this paper, a parametric study using a 3-D finite element model (FEM) of a single offshore suction caisson (SOSC) surrounded by saturated soil is performed to examine the effect of some key factors on the tensile resistance of the suction bucket foundation. Among the aforementioned parameters, caisson geometry and uplift loading as well as the difference between the tensile resistance and suction pressure on the behavior of the soil-foundation system including tensile capacity are investigated. For this purpose, a full model including 3-D suction caisson, soil, and soil-structure interaction (SSI) is developed in Abaqus based on the u-p formulation accounting for soil displacement (u) and pore pressure, P.The dynamic responses of foundations are compared and validated with the known results from the literature. The paper has focused on the effect of geometry change of 3-D SOSC to present the soil-structure interaction and the tensile capacity. Different 3-D caisson models such as triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, and octagonal are employed. It is observed that regardless of the caisson geometry, by increasing the uplift loading rate, the tensile resistance increases. More specifically, it is found that the resistance to pull-out of the cylinder is higher than the other geometries and this geometry is the optimum one for designing caissons.
This paper presents the results of full-scale uplift load tests performed on 24 passive anchors grouted to various lengths at Okchun and Changnyong site. Rock anchors were installed over a wide range of rock types and qualities with a fixed anchored depth of 1~6 m. The majority of installations used D51 mm high grade steel rebar to induce rock failure prior to rod failure. However, a few installations included the use of D32 mm rebar at relatively deeper anchored depth so as to induce rod failure. In many tests, rock failure was reached and the ultimate loads were recorded along with observations of the shape and extent of the failure surface. In addition to field tests, laboratory pullout tests were conducted to determine bond strength and bond stress-shear slip relation at the tendon/grout interface when a corrosion protection sheath is installed in the cement-based grout. The test results show that the ultimate tendon-grout bond strength is measured from 18~25% of unconfined compressive strength of grout. One of the important results from these tests is that the measured strains along the corrosion protection sheath were so small that practically the reduction of bond strength by the presence of sheath would be negligible.
