  • In order to reduce the loss of perilla seeds at harvesting stage, different seeding methods and harvesting time had been applied to upland soil in NICS (National Institute of Crop Science), RDA, Milyang, Korea. The seeding methods were divided into hill and drill seeding, and harvesting time were 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% color-changing of top cluster perilla (cv Deulsaem) seeds. Higher plant height and lowest flower cluster, thinner culm thickness was observed in drill seeding treated plot than hill seeding treated plot. However, field lodging occurred lower at drill seeding treatment (lodging degree 3) than hill seeding plot (lodging degree 5). Harvesting time affected the loss of perilla seeds and the loss rate of perilla seeds were investigated at different color-changing of top flower cluster. When seeds were harvested at 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% color-changing of top cluster perilla seeds, the loss rate of hill and drill seeding showed no significant differences however the loss rated of 40, 60, 80, and 100 % color-changing of top flower cluster were 1.9% to 3.0%, 3.8% to 3.9%, 8.0% to 10.2%, and 16.1% to 22.7%, respectively. The harvesting time had no significant effects on the yield of perilla seeds. These results suggest that optimum harvesting time of perilla could be recommend at the 60% color-changing of top cluster to reduce the loss of perilla seeds.

  • An attempt was made to develop a simple testing method fro blast resistance in the aged rice plant grown under the paddy field conditions. The blast resistance was tested with the detached 3rd leaves from the top of the plant, which were inoculated by dropping blast spore suspension mixed with 1% Tween 20 on the punched area and kept in 1% sucrose solution. The blast reaction was measured ten days after incubation at 26-28$^{\circ}C$ under highly humid conditions. With this method blast resistant lines were effectively identified and the cost of testing was cheap as compared with any other methods ever practiced.

  • The aim of this study is to assess the OSMI (Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager), whose central bands are 443nm, 490nm, 510nm, 555nm, 670nm, and 865nm, for agricultural applications. Radiance measurements, used to determine per cent reflectance of canopies and soils, were acquired with spectro-radiometers (Li-1800;330∼1,100nm, GER-SFOV;350∼2,500nm, and MSR-7000; 300∼2,500nm) in situ for crops and indoors for soils. OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values were prepared(20nm interval for bands 1∼5; 40nm interval for band 6) by averaging spectral reflectance values to the real OSMI bands and analyzed as to crop growth parameters, leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter, and growth index in crops and physiochemical properties in soils. Spectral variations for each growth stage in rice and for crop discrimination in upland crops were significant statistically. In soils, clay and water content, CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity), free iron oxide, and some cation content were correlated with the OSMI equivalent bands. The result of this study shows OSMI wave bands would be promising for agricultural application in terms of spectral information and resolution.

  • Average yield of wheat and barley cultivars has been increased 3 percent every year by varietal improvement. The major characteristic changes of those improved cultivars were the early maturing and lodging resistance using dwarf genes, 70-90cm of culm length appearances, under the heavy fertilizer application. Looking back the cultural practices of wheat and barley for the last 20 years, the introduction of early maturing and lodging resistance cultivars around 1970 brought the changes of seeding rate from 65kg to 130- 200kg per hector and the tillering increased by heavy fertilizer. The utilization of livestock and man power for preparation of seedbed were gradually disappeared by increasing agricultural mechanization. The narrow-spaced seeding $(40cm {\times} l8cm)$ and drill seeding $(20cm {\times} 5cm)$ in upland, broadcasting or drilling on high ridge $(120cm {\times} 90cm)$ with the power-toller and whole area broadcasting in paddy field were improved as the main cultural method. The use of agricultural machineries reduced the labour consumption of 940 man hours to 180 man hours per hector from seeding to harvest.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify how much the MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) can explain the soil moisture simulated from SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) continuous hydrological model. For the application, ChungjuDam watershed (6,661.3 $km^2$) was adopted which covers land uses of 82.2 % forest, 10.3 % paddy field, and 1.8 % upland crop respectively. For the preparation of spatial soil moisture distribution, the SWAT model was calibrated and verified at two locations (watershed outlet and Yeongwol water level gauging station) of the watershed using daily streamflow data of 7 years (2000-2006). The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiencies for the verification at two locations were 0.83 and 0.91 respectively. The 16 days spatial correlation between MODIS NDVI and SWAT soil moisture were evaluated especially during the NDVI increasing periods for forest areas.

  • BACKGROUND: Coal combustion bottom ash(BA) has high carbon and calcium content, and alkaline pH, which might improve nutrient cycling in soil related to microbial enzyme activities as it is used as soil amendment. However, it contains heavy metals such as copper(Cu), manganese (Mn), and zinc(Zn), which could cause heavy metals accumulation in soil. Compost might play a role that stabilize BA. The objective of this study was to evaluate effect of combined application of BA and compost as soil amendment on heavy metals concentration, enzyme activities, chemical properties, and crop yield in upland soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: BA was applied at the rate of 0, 20, 40, and 80 Mg/ha under different rate of compost application (0 and 30 Mg/ha) in radish (Raphanus sativus var) field. Combined application of BA and compost more improved chemical properties such as pH, EC, OM, total nitrogen, available phosphate, and exchangeable cations of soil than single application of BA. Water soluble Mn and Zn concentration in soil significantly decreased with increasing application rate of BA. Decrease in those metals concentration was accelerated with combined application of BA and compost. Urease and dehydrogenase activities significantly increased with increasing application rate of BA. Phosphotase activities were not affected with single application of BA but increased with combined application of BA and compost. Radish yield was not affected by application rate of BA. CONCLUSION: From the above results, combined application of BA and compost could be used as soil amendment to improve chemical properties and enzyme activities of soil without increase in heavy metal concentration and decrease in crop yield in upland soil.

  • A survey on rodent damage to ripening rice was conducted in Sep.-Oct. in 1973 in order to indentify the habitat type which has the greatest influence on rodent populations and damage problems. Total 109 paddies were examined in three geographical regions in central part of Korea including Kangwon and Kyoungki Provinces, which represents mountainous, coastal and rice plain lands. Sample paddies were selected according to the neighboring or surrounding habitats as farm villages, upland-crop fields, grassy river banks, forests and rice plains. Snap trapping was also conducted in each of habitats. In April, 1974, field trips were taken to representative parts of Korea visiting farmers and rural guidance officers involving more than 100 people for the information of existing local problems. The general damage of rice was considerably low in 1973 averaging $63\%$ in early ripening varieties and $0.26\%$ in standard varieties, white the average lost in 1971 was $14.2\%$ in early ripening varieties and $2.7\%$ in standard varieties. But the most of severe damages was occurred within 50 meters (practically none beyond 100m) of farm villages, caused mainly by Norway rat (Rattus rottfus Caraco) and striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius). The examples of existing local problems confirmed that the rodent damage to field crops is closely associated with rodent populations that have survived the winter in and around farm houses and buildings.

  • Evapotranspiration is a major factor determining the water consumption in the rice fields. Therefore, realistic evapotranspiration estimates are important to the agricultural water resources planning. In Korea, however, the Blaney-Criddle formula, which was developed under the meteorological condition of western arid United States and the upland cultivation, has been widely used to estimate evapotranspiration from paddy fields. Hence, it has considered that the Blaney-Criddle formula would not be the proper method for the Korean paddy condition. The purpose of this study is to select the most appropriate and realistic method for estimating evapotranspiraion from paddy field in Korea and to derive crop coefficients using the chosen method. The results are summerized as follows. 1. Total seasonal-average evapotranspiration by the field observation was 660mm for Tongil and 621. Ornm for the Japonica variety of rice. The amount of evapotranspiration for Tongil variety was 6% larger than that of the Japonica variety. 2. There was no significant differences in the amount of evapotranspiration among early, middle and late mature varieties, that is, early 638mm, middle 627mm and late 630mm for the whole growing season. 3. The rate of peak evapotranspiration appeared at the beginning of August and was in the range of 7.7-8. Omm/day according to the different mature varieties. 4. The correlation between pan evaporation data and the calculated evapotranspiration using related meteorological data from various methods suggested such as Radiation (FAO), Hargreaves, Christiansen, Hargreaves-Christiansen, Jensen-Haise, showed high statistic significance. Therefore, it seemed to use those formulars in estimating evapotranspiration inste4 of using pan evaporation data. 5. It was concluded from the analysis of field data that the evapotranspiration estimate for Blaney-Criddle method might not be appropriate in Korea. On the other hand, Penman equation showed more accurate estimation at the flourishing stage of rice than the pan evaporation method. 6. The crop coefficients for the Penman and pan-evaporation method were obtained by graphical representation.

  • Winter season cultivation of rye as green manure for soybean have been a favorite with farmer because it could remove a risk of injury by continuous cropping and increase N uptake and yield of soybean. Effects of rye green manure on soybean N uptake, $N_2$ fixation and yield were investigated with $^{15}N$ as pot experiment in greenhouse in 2004 and field in 2005, respectively. The N derived from N fertilizer ($^{15}N$) in rye green manure increased with increasing of N fertilizer rate compared to N derived from soil. N uptake and DM yield of soybean at the pot with paddy soil was higher than those at the pot with upland soil mainly due to the increase of N uptake from paddy soil. Total $^{15}N$ recovery in soil was higher at rye green manure than no green manure because $^{15}N$ applied to rye plant was remained highly as soil organic N compared to chemical N fertilizer. $^{15}N$ recovery in soybean plant increased in proportion to amounts of N fertilizer applied to rye. The N fractions from $N_2$ fixation of soybean plant at the pot experiment in 2004 ranged from 92% to 95%, on the other hand those in field experiment in 2005 ranged from 82% to 84%. Estimation of amount of $N_2$ fixation was not different between Difference method and $^{15}N$ method in 2004 and 2005.
